Paignton (pronounce Pain-tun) got its name from Paega's Town , the original Celtic settlement. There were a couple of spellings (Peynton, Paington) before the finally settled on the name we know today.
History;
A village believed to be dated back to 700AD and is mentioned in the Doomsday book in 1086. Paington remained a small fishing village until the 19th Century, when in 1837 a harbour was built for the town. The original harbour still exists ... ...was opened in 1859, linking Paignton and Torquay with London. Now operated as a heritage railway. Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway operates from Paignton to Kingswear, passing the sea and the River Dart. -The beautiful Oldway Mansion was built in the 1870s for Isaac Singer, the inventor of the sewing machine. Advantages: Easy to find your way round, sea air, lots of pubs lol Disadvantages: Gets busy, seagulls, sometimes expensive
Paignton is situated in Torbay between Brixham and Torquay. It’s a busy wee town with plenty to do, it has a quaint charm and is easy to find your way round. A favorite holiday venue particularly with the older generation most people are very friendly. There are many different types of accommodation available in the area. If you’re planning on exploring the whole of Devon having a car is a major advantage but public transport is very good for tourists. ... ...grockle shops to buy your Paignton souvenirs. For the smokers there is a fantastic old fashioned style tobacconist (which doubles as a newsagent) on Hyde road, you can get all sorts of tobaccos and smoking accessories.
Entertainment
There is a large Apollo cinema on the sea front, I think they’ve got 8 screens and are always showing the latest films.

Advantages: Central Disadvantages: Gets very busy in the summer
Paignton part of the English Riveria together with Torquay and Brixham, Paignton is an amazing place to be for a UK Summer Break. The beach is one of the largest on the South Devon with clean waters lovely to go swimming in when the sun is baking hot on your back. Punch & Judy shows, Pony Rides, The Pier, Fish and Chips on the Sea Front, arcades, shopping, camp sites, bed and breakfasts - all of this within walking distance. Paignton is a very friendly ...
