Paris, my town ....

Advantages: ...
Disadvantages: ...

I was born in Paris 20 years ago and I have always lived there since then. Consequently I decided to write several opinions about one of the subjects I know the best: Paris. For my first opinion of this set I will talk about Paris in general. I will try to make an opinion as exhaustive as possible. But I will talk more about some places I usually go to instead of talking of well-known places that are described in every tour guide. First let’s begin ...
...Paris has been found at the intersection of two rivers the Seine and the Bievre this place was covered with wood and bogs. The first signs of living have been dated of 1000 BC on islands but Paris actually developed with the Roman invasion. The banks of the seine were then fitted out but the right bank was full of bogs and uneasy to habit. On both banks temples had been built they have been replace after by churches. Most of the houses are built ...

Five go mad in Paris...Part Deux

Advantages: Beautiful city, and not too far away!
Disadvantages: Not near enough!

...the second part of my Paris op. I wasn’t going to post this second part until later today, but the scattyredhead that I am still am has just realised that the first part will not have gone onto the Top 20 as it was in a Café category, duh!! So, I thought for once in my life I would join the churners...briefly! If you want to read Part One..well you know where to go now! Cheers! Read on! Chapter 3 ~~~~~~~~ Picture the scene, 7 English women and ...
...on for 9.00pm now and Paris was just going out to eat for the evening. All the ‘pretty people’ strolled the streets, the only decision to make was where they were going to eat that night. Limousines deposited the rich and famous (well they might have been!!) outside all the classy joints. Next year we are going to do La Fouquette too, rumour has it that’s one of the best places to catch the celebs, and you never know, Jonny might just be there without ...

A Moveable Feast

Advantages: perfect city to be inspired by architecture, culture, shopping and fine cuisine
Disadvantages: just too many tourists, hope this review wont bring too many extra ones

Writing a review of Paris requires a special approach. I would assume that 90% of Ciao readers have already been there, seen all the sights and read endlessly about it. Thus I will offer a new look at Paris: a literary review. Paris has always been home and inspiration to famous and not so famous intellectuals, artists and writers: Victor Hugo made Notre Dame his second home and the scene for his works. Honoré de Balzac wrote his Comédie Humaine ...
...however, deals less with this Paris suburb than with his own erotic fantasies. Let us explore Paris on the trails of these writers. Some of the texts employed in this review I have had to translate from French or German, so please excuse if they sound somewhat odd (in some cases it's the author's style, though). In order not to make this review too long (which I am otherwise known for), I have only selected very few spots of Paris. I didn't select ...

Paris travel

Advantages: cheap and efficient
Disadvantages: don't forgetthe joys of walking

...travel aspects. Getting to Paris from the UK RAIL personally I nearly always rely on the Eurostar service for getting to and from Paris. The terminal at London Waterloo connects well with rail lines all over the country, and is a clean and efficient place to start your journey. The terminal at Ashford in Kent might be more useful if you plan to travel by car to reach your departure station. The journey itself is about 3 hours from London, (much ...
...departure lounge. The jouney into Paris takes 20-30mins, and connects well with the metro lines at Chatelet les Halles. Watch out for the impressive Stade de France on your way. COACH Personally I can't stand being stuck on a coach for 6-8 hours, but for some this is the cheapest way to travel, and I suppose you get to see a lot of the scenery and rural France on your way. National Express link with Eurolines at London Victoria, and the latest ...

Les tunnels de verre

Advantages: Enjoy the 19th century passages of Paris
Disadvantages: None

Have you been to Paris a number of times? Have you seen most of the well-known attractions of this beautiful city? Are you looking for something different for your next visit to Paris? If the answer is yes, then I have got a suggestion for you. Discover some of the hidden treasures of Paris by walking through the area where you can find the most beautiful covered (glass-roofed) passages of this City. You might want to sit down in the tea salon ‚Arbre à cannelle‘ where you can still see some camels above the windows (it used to be a shop called ‚A la caravane‘). After you leave the Passage des Panoramas, walk through Rue St Marc, Rue Feydeau and Rue Vivienne, have a look at the Bourse (stock exchange) building, and then cross over the Rue de 4 Septembre and continue in Rue ...

Paris - passion and dog poo.

Advantages: Great city
Disadvantages: Pollution, traffic, prices etc

Impressions of Paris depend heavily on why you are there: As a tourist its a wonderful place, full of culture and life. If you live there as I have done for the last 5 years, your point of view becomes a little jaded. You are probably reading this as a future tourist, so I will enlighten you on some of the basics and highlights of this capital city: Very few people go to Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower, and rightly so; It is a masterpiece ...
...concrete. Another splendid view across Paris and midnight mass is magical. This is the only church I know that has a glass confessional box, so all the world can watch as you repent! Other highlights are the Champs Elysees for seriously chic shopping, La Defense for the buisness minded, Napoleon's tomb for a bit of pomp and Bastille for the new opera house, groovy shops and the millenium clock. For art and culture, top of the list are the Louvre ...

Paris on a budget. The final chapter.

Advantages: tips on saving
Disadvantages: none

Paris on a budget - everything else So, this is the final review in my series on Paris. I have been trying to prove that you can do Paris on a budget. The simple fact is that I went with 500 euro, and managed to come home with money, even after the duty free!! I still like to think that I got the most out of the city. So far, I have gone through a few of the major attractions in my other reviews (please check them out.). I think that they prove ...
...places to eats cheaply in Paris is the latin quarter. This is one of the oldest areas of Paris, and represents the student element of the city. The area is cramed full of little bistros, all of which will offer great value due to the intense competition for custom. You will find, that cafe's in Paris are not very good for families. Due to the high rents that they have to pay, the cafe owners have to cram as many tables in as they can. So you may ...

Why, oh why, do I love Paris?

Advantages: So much to do and see, great restaurants etc - if you know where to look...
Disadvantages: Unless you know the city and metro system, you end up wasting valuable time

I've been to Paris twice, the first time in 1999 and then again towards the end of 2001. (Hopefully I'll be able to go again before long.) Both times I went with a mate (different ones), and the two trips could hardly have been more different. But one thing came through from both trips - Paris is my one of my favourite cities in the world. My First Experience of Paris I went with a friend who, like me, knew basically nothing of Paris, and spoke about ...
...didn't know the layout of Paris we spent a lot of time wandering around wondering where we were, and also made the mistake of getting the 175F (£17.50) travel card - it's generally much cheaper to buy a pack of ten general purpose tickets instead. We flew in from Heathrow to Orly (not too far from the city centre) on a British Midland flight (breakfast included - an edible breakfast! I was seriously impressed…) for £80 from Lastminute.com - pretty ...

...conversation. My mother adores Paris though she never went. Of course she COULD go, - I never ever asked her why she DIDN’T. Maybe she really wanted to go when she was younger, and now she doesn’t really care. But I inherited her faraway impression of Paris as a romantic city, and her great admiration for impressionists. As far as the romantic perception of the town goes, maybe it was right for my mother and not for me: my mother is ...
...why when I arrived to Paris I dedicated a certain amount of my time to wandering down the streets looking for the romance of my life. I have to disappoint you (but not as much as I was disappointed myself): I didn’t find it. No beautiful stranger talked to me and turned out to be the one. Now I’m quite relieved not to have had strangers talk to me in the streets of Paris, not only because the boyfriend I have now is a sweetie and I wouldn’t ...

Voulez Vouz Rendez Vouz Avec Moi A Paris

Advantages: Beautiful
Disadvantages: Smelly

...My main tip for seeing Paris is to restrain yourself from checking maps and guidebooks constantly, don't be afraid of getting lost - the Parisians are friendly, despite what people say! Buying a 'carnet' of 10 metro tickets will save you from running out and a few pennies too. Have your own tube map and watch yourself late at night in the stations - don't be silly about your safety. If you're on a tight budget then don't go for meals along the banks ...
...like without giving a damn about the quality of what they have to offer. Give yourself at least 4 days if you want to wander or, if you only have a weekend - restrict yourself to a general area and really explore it - you'll be coming back soon anyway! Next time try going in September - it's less American and you'll find that the Parisians are less irritated because they're probably on holiday as well! ...

...hotel, this one is about Paris in general. Introduction I'm one of those people who never finds a bargain flight. I have friends who say they have been to Rome for 5p. But back in March I spotted an offer to fly to Paris for 9p - return. Wow what a bargain. But it soon added up. Airport tax, airport car parking, (what a rip off) hotel, insurance, cattery, spends. But we needed a break. I am now 6 month pregnant, so this was our last chance to get ...
...we could do all of Paris in two days, but using our little guidebook, we were able to pick which bits we really wanted to see and which to save for another trip! (I'm hoping). Eiffel Tower Well you can't go to Paris and not visit it, or at least mention it. We decided to visit on our first afternoon because it was nice and sunny and we wanted good views. We anticipated long queues, but when we got there no one was queuing. So, we paid our 11 euros ...

The City of Love, Haute Cuisine and Small Dogs

Advantages: Lots of culture, amazing food, easy to explore
Disadvantages: The wallet may take a bit of a bashing

...I'll start by saying that Paris really is a cosmopolitan, ethnically diverse and luxurious city. It is a lot smaller than London in comparison, but it is easier to navigate, the air seems a lot cleaner and the metro (underground rail system)is on time! In this sense, it is perfect for a weekend break as there are lots of things to do in a moderately compact area. I would personally suggest travelling on the Eurostar to get to Paris as opposed to ...
...airport or Orly to central Paris is much more. If you book the Eurostar in advance you should get a cheaper deal as well. Ok, so you have arrived in a central station in Paris. Where do you stay? If you are looking for a nice hotel, 3 stars are usually of a good value and quality - nicer than the equivolant in Great Britain in my experience. Place de Clichy, Mercadet Poissoniers and Les Halles - I wouldn't recommend booking a hotel in these areas. ...

Invalides and the Tomb of Napoleon

Advantages: very interesting, and a very impressive Army Museum
Disadvantages: a bit pricey compared to more mainstream attractions

Despite the numerous streets and locations named after Napoleon I (or after people related to him), his tomb is usually not regarded as a prime attraction of Paris. This is a pity, because the Dome des Invalides, Napoleon's tomb, and the adjoining Musee de l'Armee, are attractions I invariably re-visit every time I have a few days to spare in Paris. So far I have visited Invalides four times: June 1991, October 1997, October 1998, and July 1999. ...
...The main attraction is, of course, Napoleon's tomb. This tomb is set under the golden dome of the Invalides, which is plainly visible from just about every major vantage point in the city. Napoleon, who was originally buried in St. Helena, his place of exile, was later moved here in accordance with his wishes to "be buried on the banks of the Seine, among the people whom I have loved so much." The dome housing his tomb is of elaborate design, echoing ...

Out of this world!

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

I fell in love with Paris when I went there earlier this year. The city is just breathtaking, with exquisite architecture and attention to detail. You could spend hours just walking along the Seine, and the little cobbled backstreets in the Latin Quarter. Of course all the tourist attractions are amazing, and suprisingly quite reasonably priced. The Eiffel tower at night was just spectacular, and can be seen lit up from all around the city. Without ...
