A city in the sunshine, remote and empty, Perth, W.A.

Advantages: Wonderful climate, no crowds, clean, very pretty
Disadvantages: Not very historically interesting

...=Where is Perth?= Perth is the Capital city of the state of Western Australia which is physically about a third of the entire country of Australia but the population is small – only about 10% of the nation’s population. This population of about 2 million most actually live in Perth ( 1.5 million) and the other towns like Geralton, Albany, Bunbury, Kalgoorlie and Broome so it is a very empty State in the other areas. Perth is situated on the Swan ...
...which is about 2000km away. Perth is actually geographically closer to Indonesia than it is to Sydney. =A bit of History= Perth was first settled by British in 1832 and was officially known as Western Australia at this time but more often referred to as the Swan River Colony because the colony was built on the Swan River. The Swan River was named by Willem de Vlamingh in 1697 after the native black swans he saw in the river. This same Dutch captain ...

Gee - that's a lucky shag!!

Advantages: plenty to do, relaxed, vibrant, great year round climate & friendly people.
Disadvantages: very remote

...to do a visit to Perth as we had gotten some free internal Qantas flights in Oz as part of our round the world ticket and thought we may as well fly as far from Sydney as we could given it was free so off we jetted to Perth. Prior to going we booked a hotel on line (web site we used no longer seems active but you can just google the hotel name for plenty of links) and stayed at the Park Royal, Perth for 5 nights but this little trip was simply an ...

Even if I had gone with high expectations I don’t really think I would have been disappointed because it was a trip that we both enjoyed immensely and with hindsight wished we had organised more time there. Just Wait Awhile

Advantages: See Review
Disadvantages: See Review

...Bit of Background -------------------------------- Perth is in the State of Western Australia. Perth is in the South West Corner. Western Australia is absolutely massive. It makes up approximately 40% of the entire Australia land mass, and is bigger than Texas and Alaska combined. Most of the state is difficult to cross as it is mainly desert. The first European to see Western Australia was another Dutch Navigator Dirk Hartog. He was on a trip ...
...between Sydney and Perth. Perth is often described as the most remote city in the world, and indeed it is closer to South Africa than it is to Sydney. During the 20th century more and more mineral deposit kept turning up, and eventually in the 1970’s natural gas and diamonds were discovered. Many British People moved to Australia in the early part of the 20th century. Many settled in the far South West corner of WA. Contrary to the Australian Dream, ...

Capital of the Unexplored State

Advantages: Temperate climate, beautiful city and attractions, friendly fun-loving population.
Disadvantages: It is a long way from anywhere and therefore expensive to get to.

Perth was the first destination of my eight month tour of Australia and, bar a few paragraphs in Bill Bryson's Down Under and a fairly clinical description in the Lonely Planet guidebook, almost a complete unknown to me. My imagination conjured up images of a clean, attractive city bathed in perpetual sunshine with a laid back, fun-loving and friendly population. Imagine my surprise when I arrived to find the roads damp from a recent downpour and ...
...and a few days in Perth my feelings for the city improved considerably, generally the city did bask in sunshine with crisp clear blue skies that highlight its impressive skyline. Also temperatures of just under 20 Celcius are not to be scoffed at during the middle of winter, indeed when the sun was shining my perceived image of Perth seemed remarkably close to the mark. Perth is the capital of Western Australia, by far the largest state in Oz, and ...

Isolation has its rewards

Advantages: Fun, easy, quite cheap, friendly and great weather for the beach
Disadvantages: A long flight from London (or anywhere)

Perth has the reputation of being the most isolated capital city in the world. It is closer to Bali than Sydney and Melbourne and sits in the south west corner of the huge state of Western Australia. What many people seem to miss when they think about Western Australia is that it covers fully one-third of the landmass of Australia. Think of it in terms of Europe - the distance between Perth and Sydney is roughly the same distance as between London ...
...point I'm making is that Perth is a long way from anywhere and this can be a little disconcerting for travellers used to the confines of Europe. A commitment to visit Perth is quite an undertaking. Lucky as tourists we can access all manner of travel deals that are not available to the locals - airfares in Australia are only cheap on the east coast!! So what happens once you get there? First off you need to find some accommodation and like most sophisticated ...

The place to go

Advantages: Fantastic Place
Disadvantages: Long plane journey

...the winter. The winter in Perth is just like our summer. I wouldn’t like to battle the sun in their summer. You see dead kangaroos at the side of the road just as you would hedgehogs in England. Our first evening was spent acclimatising with sleep the main priority. Jet lag took at least 24 hours to wear off. Lynwood a suburb of Perth is full of POMS. I felt well at home. I stayed in a bungalow. Most Australians live in a bungalow. Apparently ...
...place an hour’s drive from Perth called Kirrys track. This was great. There were no cars on the road and not a person in sight, which was often the case once you got out of the city. Australia is so big but has such a small population. There is a hell of a lot of wildlife about. The parrots just love humans as well. They just fly down and land on your shoulder. There were many waterfalls and streams. A fantastic sight. There would have been ...

Remote control

Advantages: weather, food, wines
Disadvantages: it's a long way from home

Perth is supposed to be the most remote city on earth. It is nearer to Singapore than any of the other major Australian cities and let me tell you it certainly feels like it when you're trying to get there! 24 hours after getting on the plane at Heathrow and I finally arrive in the warm night air and it all starts. The airport staff are the friendliest I've ever met and that's a theme that seemed to follow throughout my 3 week trip. There are so ...
...of the pinnacles desert. Perth itself is a surprisingly cosmopolitan city featuring cuisine from most of the Pacific rim, vietnamese, Thai, Japanese food were all eaten by me over there and everything was superb, especially seafood which is so fresh. Shopping is brilliant, particularly for surf wear, if you're a fan like me you'll be able to pick up some real bargains, particularly Stussy and Mambo clothing. Basically Perth is a fantastic place ...

Imagine your dream holiday or dream life..it's here in Perth

Advantages: Friendly city with great transport and something for everyone from wildlife to clubbing
Disadvantages: Its so far away..I want to go every weekend.

Perth City, Australia. I kind of wished I was a member on here 5 years ago when I decided to travel to Aus for a year but its still all in my memory and Perth stands way way out, it is easily the best place I have ever visited in my life. I travelled out August 2004 and my flight was from Dublin to Perth via Kuala Lumpur. When I arrived I first stayed at the YHA backpacker's hostel based in Wellington Street, Perth. This was a great base for me to ...
...from the "City" area of Perth City which contained the main shops, malls and also the business centre and the buildings that you see in the picture of the fantastic skyline. I would recommend the YHA to anyone as its cheap and in a fantastic location. It also offers all sorts of rooms from single to 110 bed dorms, so it really has something for everyone. What I done. Perth Zoo. This is a truly amazing zoo, quite different to many others I have visited ...

Perth : Western Promise

Advantages: good weather, good beaches, good facilties, good, good, good!!!
Disadvantages: Absolutely none

Perth in the far bottom left of Australia is approx. 1500 miles away from any other town or city, but when youre there you would never know it. It is reletively small compared to the giant Sydney but it has a quaintness that endures. Perth has one of the most "picturesque" city centres ive been to. The river Swan cuts throught the centre of Perth and standing on the hill lookin over the estury at Kings Park you really get a breath taking view of ...
...back. The people of Perth seem to not have a care in the world.I once asked someone if they were going to work and was answered ..."well i might go in a bit later...i dont know yet!!!". i went to Perths Scarborough Beach....WOW!! miles of white sand on the Indian Ocean coast of Australia. You get the feeling that you have trully "arrived" when you sit on that beach at sunset. if youre looking for a holiday with hot weather, friendly atmosphere, good ...

Friendliest town in the West

Advantages: Friendly and non-touristy
Disadvantages: None - I loved it all

...is well worth a visit. Perth has beautiful beaches, unspoilt outback, fabulous scenery and some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met. Two cities in one, North and South Perth are separated by the River Swan. You can travel between the two cities by ferry or road. The main business parts of the city are in North Perth and its skyline rivals New York. All of the buildings are lit up at night and it’s a breathtaking sight when viewed from the river. ...
...two hour ferry ride from Perth is Rottenest Island. This is a rather ugly name for a lovely little island. Rottenest lies in the middle of the Indian Ocean and is very popular with the residents of Perth and its surrounding areas. Many Australians own holiday chalets there. It only takes an hour to walk around the island; you have to walk or cycle as cars are banned there. Getting around Perth is easy as all public transport is free within the city ...

The REAL Australia

Advantages: Beautiful City within a remote and beautiful state.
Disadvantages: Long plane journey, but worth it... eventually!

...you consider setting off for Perth from anywhere in the UK, there is one fact you should take on board... It is a VERY long way from home! No amount of in flight entertainment can take the edge off of what is a very arduous journey. After around 12 hours of the 19 hour flight, I began to lose the will to live. However, once the magnificent city skyline came into view and the sun shone in through the tiny windows of the plane, it suddenly felt ...
...was ready to see what Perth and Western Australia had to offer. So what does it have to offer? Perth offers just about eveything you could want from a holiday or life in general. It was recently voted one of the top 10 most desirable places in the world to live and I can see why. Perth is a clean and tidy city with a great combination of old and new architecture. The view of the city from King's Park is a must. There is plenty to do by day and ...

The world's remotest city - Perth

Advantages: Attractive place, probably nice for retirement. Good for backpackers.
Disadvantages: Not much to see, don't go in the winter.

...flight tickets, and landed in Perth on May 10th 2004. I had booked a room for the three of us online (which was the cheapest we could find), at the Perth Ambassador Hotel on Adelaide Terrace. When we first arrived in Australia, we were all a bit down at having to leave Hong Kong, and were really tired from the travelling. We checked in at the hotel after taking a taxi, the receptionist said they only had a booking for 2 people to share a single ...
...it. We also visited Perth zoo, which was one of my highlights of the whole of Oz. I definitely recommend it, and I loved the Rhinos there. It was relatively cheap too. The main town centre was nice, kind of quaint but not really a lot of choice there, but loads of nice cafes and bookshops. We walked most places, even places miles away (or felt like it) but I was glad we did, cos we saw loads of things on the way, like funny signs (expose yourself ...

GATEWAY TO ASIA

Advantages: Get to know the fellow Pelicans
Disadvantages: Really need some form of transport for the weekends

Perth is the gateway to Fremantle, and Asia. Although most people venture up to Darwin then over to Bali. Fremantle is the most spot for the beginning of the yacht race... which Kiwis are pretty good at. Perth has a wonderful skyline that can be perfect picture material from the other side of the harbour. There is a great big green in the middle of the town, kind of like a mini Central Park. (It might not smack bang in the middle). When you enter ...

Rockingham near Perth

Advantages: Great beaches, great weather!
Disadvantages: sometimes a little TOO hot!

I went to Rockingham in 2001, for 7 weeks and it was one of the best holidays i've ever had! The place was so clean, there is no smoking allowed out of doors (for risk of grass fires) and no drinking allowed in the streets, which greatly reduces crime. There are plenty of pools to wile away the days if this takes your fancy, or there are gorgeous beaches, some built y man specifically for surfing, they dig great wells in the sand at intervals out ...
...(the first one you come across is absolutely petrifying!) It is very cheap to rent cars out there, and they all come equipped with what seems like super powered air conditioning, and all mod cons of cars, we never had a single problem with one! There are museums and gift shops for all, or there are whaling stations, where you can see how they used to do whaling, and various bits and pieces, you can go out fishing on proper trips with professionals, ...
