Advantages: One of the most beautiful and romantic places and cities in the world! Disadvantages: The square can sometimes flood, back alley's with poor drainage can smell slightly but this does not affect main aress at all
If you are not staying in Venice itself, you will usually arrive by a ferry boat that usually drops you at the mouth of the grand canal. There are a lot of different "bus" stops here so try and remember the number of the stop so you can locate it on your way back!! Once you have left the boat you will find yourself on a large walkway with buildings on one side and the open water on the other! It is very strange to know you are in a city with no roads! ... ...this will lead you to St Marks Square and the hub of Venice.
As you are walking along (depending on how far up you were dropped) you may go over a number of stunning bridge that traverse the smaller canals running into the city. Take a look to your right as you go over and you will see some picture postcard views of the local life and houses.
Before you reach the entrance to St Marks Square you will go over a slightly larger bridge and you will ...

Advantages: History Beauty and Style Disadvantages: No Free Seats
PIAZZA SAN MARCO. is like falling in love with a Beautiful Woman, when with her you can not stay long enough, when away you can not wait to return to her.
You may speak to people who have only visited her on a Day trip, they will probably have not been impressed. They will only have seen her in the company of thousands.
To see the Piazza at its best and Romantic you must Visit her late at night with your wife, husband, lover or just a friend. The ... ...really highlights the shape of the square.
When you enter from the Grand Canal DO NOT WALK BETWEEN the two columns, in the past you only passed between when being sent for execution.
The Doges Palace is on your right, this is well worth a Tour, get there early to beat the queues. (Day Trippers normally decend on Venice about 09:45). Beautiful rooms and full of history. On this trip you cross over the Bridge of sighs to visit the prison.

Advantages: Beautiful, centre of town Disadvantages: Pidgeons. Tourists.
Napoleon called it "the finest drawing room in Europe." A big square like those all throughout Europe, but a special one because its in Venice. No car noises nearby, just you and the square..
At dusk the square empties on weeknights as everyone goes home and it can be an eerie place (as its so quiet with no cars) when no one else is around, though of course as at a tourist attraction someone will always be nearby. Sit down for a coffee, a place ... ...seat in the square (rather than inside the coffee shop) and watch all the other tourists pass by.. be careful which cafe you sit at because they each take turns in having musicians play and if you sit at the one that has the musicians working, you will pay a 5 euro charge per person - regardless of what you order. Note the building with the tower to the side of the square, for a few euros you can catch a lift up to the top and have a great view over ...

Advantages: Gorgeous place in the evening Disadvantages: Makes you feel a bit lonely if single!
St. Mark's Square can change completely between day and arly evening. In the day it is really really busy, with just too many tourists all rushing around, taking lots of pictures of the beautiful buildings. Not forgetting all the pigeons which are flying around and leaving their "mark" everywhere. So all in all its a bit of a stressful time as you try not to bump into anyone or get crapped on by a pigeon, as a result you do miss the actual beauty ... ...is NOT to sit down for a coffee in St Mark's Square, it will set you back 14 Euros each!!!
The sun sets and in St. Mark's Square, the pigeons and millions of tourists all disappear in the evening, leaving a beautifully romantic setting. The square is lit up with lights going around the top of buildings. There are waiters all dressed up in dinner suits serving people. There are a few small groups of professional musicians dotted around the square ...
