At the mouth of the Plym.

...am talking about. Plymouth first appeared as a town, when the three adjoining smaller towns of Devonport; Stonehouse, and Sutton all came together. For years it was just this, but then as the population grew it expanded its borders. None more so than after the second world war, when it took in all of the surroundings villages out to (but still not including) Roborough. In the 1950s/ 60's, Plympton and Plymstock became suburbs. It was during World ...
...Shopping For years, Plymouth has always been since as being a bit of a back water. Anything stops at Bristol, then comes no further. But once the main city centre became pedestrianised, this seemed to lift the spirits with many more top names becoming apparent. Their attempts at having an indoor shopping centre have been crap, with Sainsburys taking over half of the only indoor one that we had. But 12 months ago, we welcomed Drake Circus in to our ...

...sitting in a building in Plymouth city centre watching the rain pour down from the heavens, the cars driving past the window and a post lady getting wet as she delivers her mail to the busy citizens of Plymouth. Hmm, from my window I can see the YMCA gym - lots of fit people in there - pretty cheap too! I envy those people currently in there sitting under a sunbed or in a sauna. How nice it would be to be there now... Snap out of it! Okeedokee, ...
...from a bigger city than Plymouth you will probably think its crap for shopping. I personally think it is so I go shopping in Bristol...other than that if you like surfing there's a few surf shops dotted around the place which are pretty cool. Being a little weird, I like kooky things so my favourite shops are Blue Banana, Rhubarb and Some Bizzarre Clothing. Plymouth doesn't cater for non Kevs and Sharons so anyone into rock music might find it a ...

A guide

Advantages: Locality of beaches, great to eat and drink. Good base to explore Devon and Cornwall
Disadvantages: Long drive from most of the country, bad city centre

...it's all merged into one, Plymouth originally consisted of three towns. The Barbican (where I live), Stonehouse and Plympton. The Barbican was and still is the major fishing harbour for the town. Stonehouse was where the huge, armarda defeating, Navy were based, and still are, and Plympton....well thats just Plympton! I expect you know this already but Sir Francis Drake was supposed to have been playing bowls on Plymouth Hoe when he was informed ...
...HOUSE - great views over Plymouth Sound and the Hoe. Remember to request a room South facing over Plymouth Sound. Wise to ask for one as high as possible. COPTHORNE - Good city centre location and the nearest to the train station. GRAND - Best by far, but also the most expensive. Situated nicely on the Hoe with good views from upper rooms. Typical of the 'Grand' hotels across the country. MAYFLOWER - Just off the Hoe but still offering good views ...

...the south west of England, Plymouth is on the Devon /Cornwall boundaries. A city with a huge population (Several million) Plymouth is deemed as a desirable place to visit and live. Its geographical position means that the Naval dockyard and busy port can operate without too much hindrance. Also, it is known for its active nightlife and famous for important historical reasons(Mayflower sailing, Sir Francis Drake etc). Residing in Plymouth for 99% ...
...write a knowledgeable account of Plymouth in general, as with any city there are good and bad aspects. Getting here is easy, by coach to Bretonside bus station, by train(ha ha)by plane, yes we do have a tiny airport, or by car.(Head down the M5 follow the A38 and turn off before the big bridge). Flattened by the Germans in World war two, Plymouth has risen from the ashes. There is a monument in the middle of one of the town roundabouts, which serves ...

Plymouth,A Fine Maritime City

Advantages: Interesting. History. Maritime Flavour. Good Shops
Disadvantages: Can get very busy. Prices can get high in touristy areas

...This is why I like Plymouth in South West England very much. Frankly it is not a city that I know exceptionally well but I have visited it on three separate occasions and liked what I saw.It seems to me to be a very relaxed,laid-back sort of place that somehow succeeds in successfully combining the old with the new. Plymouth is a nice mixture of modernity and old world charm. Due to the German Air Force during World War II, much of the city centre ...
...The dining out scene in Plymouth is good-apart from the usual fast food joints such as four branches of Kentucky Fried Chicken, three branches of McDonalds and two Burger King outlets, there are old English tea rooms, fish and chip restaurants, pubs serving up reasonably priced bar food , English cafes and a goodly array of ethnic eateries, as one would expect in a cosmopolitan maritime city. Although unfortunately I havent been able to sample them ...

YOUR CORNISH AND YOU KNOW YOU ARE

Advantages: Nice areas of the city (waterfront, Hoe and Barbican) local city that provides all you need and a nice center for other areas
Disadvantages: Looks pretty bad and there are nasty sides to it.

...Cornwall Geographically Plymouth is way down in the south west on the border between Devon and Cornwall on the south coast. Of course that means it is in Cornwall though locals deny this and Exeter people claim this, hence the title. The river Tamar passes through Plymouth to its mouth and estuary and this is the border line between the counties. It is the largest city in Devon in terms of population close to 200,000 people. Despite that Exeter is ...
...county council buildings, while Plymouth is the industrial city. Getting there is easy, though is a long drive from any part of the county, about five hours from London. By car the main road into Plymouth is the A38. Just get onto the M5 motorway and keep going south towards the south west. Past Exeter the motorway turns into the A38 and branches in two one to Torquay and other to Plymouth. It is easily signposted and good roads all the way. The ...

Getting away from Plymouth

Advantages: It's near Cornwall
Disadvantages: Not near enough though

Although Plymouth is a nice town with lots to do and see with many historical associations, my personal feeling is that it is too big if one is on holiday. There are two JD Wetherspoon pubs there and I was not able to find one of them, so that didn't increase my enthusiasm to stay there!! Here then is my light hearted guide of short breaks to get away from Plymouth. The first thought that crosses my mind is to head North for Dartmoor. This is such ...
...Another alternative from Plymouth is to take the free car ferry across to Cornwall. There is also the alternative of going over the river by the road bridge, which at the last time I went was a very attractive one built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and well worth seeing, but I thought I'd mention the ferry to prove I'd been there and not copying this from a book and to give you an alternative. One ends up not more than about 15 miles from some lovely ...

...almost, I have been attending Plymouth University studying geography. Unlike most students in Plymouth I live in an excellent house for hardly any money, but please don’t tell our land lord that! The University itself is situated along the main Plymouth – Exeter road which runs through the centre of the city, and is just off the roundabout before Charles Cross (the one with the bombed out church in the centre). It also has one of the ...
...its current university status. Plymouth in the last 50 – 100 years, has lost some of its importance in the United Kingdom with the decline of the dockyard, and naval base. It was once famous for Sir Francis Drake, and the nasty Spaniards turning up one day for a fight in their boats, and him telling them to wait until he had finished his bowels on Plymouth Hoe. It still does however had some excellent shops in the main high street, these include ...

The best school in Devon

Advantages: Excelent pupil-teacher relationship, 1st Class extra cirricular activites
Disadvantages: expensive

...hell was played out at Plymouth College in Devon. A secondary school and Primary school all in one, it takes either boys or girls (since it went fully co-ed) and takes them through the Key Stage cirriculum, GCSEs and A-Levels. The School also has a boarding facility, of which I was part, usually catering for 100 pupils, and usually overseas pupils. The school itself has 650 pupils, which is small for a school it size, but so are the grounds that ...

The timetable is based around 8 35-minute lessons held throughout the day with two 5 minute and 20 minute breaks and a full hour lunch time. Even though these lessons may appear short they are usually intensive and you can be assured to get a lot of information out of them. Also homework is set for 3 of the lessons each ...

Sea breezes as you shop

Advantages: Sea air, not too many pigeons
Disadvantages: long walks, although it's nice having no cars

After living in plymouth for a year, and making regular journeys back to see friends and family, I've, in that time managed to see a lot of what Plymouth has to offer. My personal favourite thing about the city is the shopping. It may not be anything compared to some of the countries other major cities, but there is definitely something there for everyone. The number of brand name shops is always increasing. A new NEXT and also a big menswear shop ...
...When I think about it, it seems like the town is obsessed with food. There are resteraunts, fast food joints (2 MacDonalds, KFC, Burger King, Wimpy, and the list goes on), cafes, sandwich bars etc etc. all over the place. So you won't go hungry. There's even a supermarket in the main street. The main shopping part of the centre is split along and around 3 streets. These run parallel to eachother and are each about half a mile long. Joining them all ...

Disadvantages: a little cramped & remote

...or 3 miles south of Plymouth and isn't too far from the coast between the villages of Kingsand & Cawsand. Before commenting in the hotel it is worth mentioning first about the beautiful natural beauty of the area more or less untouched by man in hundreds of years, with lots of scenic routes available should you wish to hike around the moors & coastal areas. As a city person I found the change of air & scenary totally embracing but I think the place ...
...well presented in a kind of old-fashioned & traditional way. The bar & restaurant are quainty & cosy without being too brassy & loud. As you might expect the menu is primarily sea based but the choice is quite mouthwatering and reasonably priced. There's only a handful of bedrooms (plus 6 ensuite bedrooms)available. But they were very clean, airy & comfortable with a good supply of blankets, sheets & fresh pillows. Room service & the regular meals ...

Plymouth

...was born and bred in Plymouth and moved away at 26 years old because of work. I visit family about once a month and in my mind Plymouth is the best city in the world, but it does have faults. PLymouth is also famous for its naval dockyard, Devonport. A large and leading naval port in England. ...

Hotels in plymouth

Advantages: Copthorn price. Grand Decor
Disadvantages: Copthorn location. Grand price.

I have stayed in two hotels in plymouth. First the Copthorn hotel and then this year the Grand hotel on the sea front. I stayed at the Copthorn first because it was closer tothe university which I was visiting. Overall, I enjoyed my stay at both the hotels I visited. The only problem in the Grand was the bar. Although always open it was not always manned. The bar in the copthorn was alot bussier so was always manned. Both of the sets of rooms stayed ...

I ate in both the hotels, and have since ate in the copthorn again on a sunday. Both the meals were delightful, although differed considerably in price. Stay away for your own sake

Advantages: Full of British history
Disadvantages: Rough as a bucket of rusty nails

Plymouth seems to live simply by taking up all the failed planning applications turfed out by Exeter City Council. A case in point is the Warner Village Cinema. Originally planned for Exeter, the city council decided not to grant permission for the project to start and so Plymouth welcomed it with open arms! Obviously a good decision, but to be honest, I would much rather have the cinema in Exeter, which is cleaner, much more pleasant (and obviously ...
...and for stuff like the Plymouth Dome (much better than the Millennium version), the city museum and other attractions showing off the maritime heritage of Plymouth make it worthwhile. However, actually being in Plymouth is a different matter. The last time I was in Plymouth, walking to a great little Indian Restaurant, we were worried for our lives as the gunshots went off around us...the residents didn't blink an eye, which means it must be a regular ...

Indoor skiing the safe & easy way

Advantages: Good prices, lots of help from tutors, skill levels, coffee bars, good atmos
Disadvantages: none to speak of

This was our first time at any kind of indoor skiing centre, and even more so for me since I was the only one out of the party of 4 who has never donned a pair of skis for love nor money anywhere! However, after such initial hesitation and lots of convincing I decided to join the troupee and take a chance with destiny on the artificial snow slopes of Plymouth. To my great surprise (and huge relief) the centre offered us our own professional instructors ...
...individual skills. My skills are quite easy: the nearest I've ever come to skiing is down the icy front garden path of my home on a winter's morning! However, the tutors were patient enough & skilled enough to push me on to what I felt was as steep & daunting as Vald'zyre, Austria. The skis come well equipped with safety harnesses, protectors & gloves, because even though its only an artificial slope it can still potentially be quite dangerous ...
