...side of Funchal. The Porto Santa Maria is at the opposite end of town, right at the border between the 'old' town and the rest of Funchal.
It's only a short walk from the hotel to the cable car and the town centre shops (although this is over cobbles, so beware if you need a wheelchair or if you have difficulty walking), and there are plenty of restaurants around.

Advantages: Easy access to all activities and public transport. Disadvantages: Probably quite expensive!
This is a beautiful hotel situated right at the end of the main promanade in Funchal. The views across the ocean, and into the city are perfect, with the sun setting over golden cliffs to the west in the evening towards the harbour. The hotel is situated right by the cable car and taxi rank, with the city centre on your door step, yet it is not a busy area, with very little noise.
