Disadvantages Disadvantages Those Roads, Expensive generally

.....if only! Just back from one of the best holidays of my life. Two weeks in Provence, and how I wish it had been a year as in Peter Mayle’s book….. We booked our hotel, car hire and accommodation independently. We found our cottage by leafing through a Blake’s Cottages – France book, and we were actually able to book on line, so we instantly knew which cottages were available for what weeks. However, we booked six months in advance and many of the cottages which we liked were already gone, so my advice is to book as early as you can, not that we were disappointed with our accommodation at ... more

Advantages Advantages 300 days of sunshine per year

Disadvantages Disadvantages hard to get there

I recently went to St Paul-de-Vence for my holiday. I am lucky enough to have a friend who owns a beautiful 5 bedroom house with a large swimming pool, so accommodation wasn't a worry for me. I was quite happy to sit by the pool and soak up the sun, but I also enjoyed going down to the village to look in all the lovely small shops and local markets. I thought I would write this review and share it with you. I hope you enjoy it" St Paul-De-Vence. Dating back to the 11th Century, St Paul-De-Vence lies between mountains and sea, overlooking the Mediterranean sea on the world renowned French ... more

Advantages Advantages great views and fab food

    Disadvantages Disadvantages a bit isolated

In September I went on holiday to the Var region of Provence, France for two weeks with my partner. We found a place to stay by searching on the net and didn’t know anything about it before we went so we were pretty pleased with what we found. Our criteria were as follows:- - somewhere with a pool not shared by many people - a good base to explore the region (near cote d’azur) from - near vineyards - somewhere fairly quiet i.e. not a large apartment complex - not outrageously expensive - nice, tidy apartment The apartment The apartment itself was very nice. We had a 2 person ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Hard work to organise, a very long way to drive

Ok, holidays over and back to work for me... still getting into the swing of things here but thought I would write you all a nice op about my hols... I know, shock and horror, its not a Lush op! (Just for Deano :) and all the other men worn down by Lush) Are we all ready? Then I shall begin.... Bit of a different holiday for me this year, generally they consist of very little travel to a nice hot country where I can lounge around and my every need is catered for, ahhh... Not this year though, oh no, mini decides that this year is a time for exploration which is why me and three others ended up ... more

    Advantages Advantages History Art Beauty

    Disadvantages Disadvantages 2,500,000 Other Visitors

As you drive towards the picturesque village of Vence on the road from Cagnes-Sur -Mer the breathtakingly beautiful sight of Saint Paul de Vence will appear before you. Few are the people who could see this for the first time and not stop to gaze in admiration before rushing on intent on visiting the ancient village that has remained so well preserved for centuries. Saint Paul preserved so long by poverty is now one of the worlds biggest tourist attractions with 2,500,000 visitors a year. It owes much of this fame to the artists attracted here throughout much of the twentieth century. The ... more

From September of last year (2000)our student daughter had a university placement as a language assistant in a school in the small but beautiful village of Cadanet in the Luberon area of Provence. My husband, myself and our daughter, all fell deeply in love with the area. Cadanet and the neighbouring villages were each as charming and as interesting as each other. We spent two weeks last September in Provence settling our daughter into what would be her home for the duration of her stay in Cadanet. Her house had been provided along with a low rent by the local Mairie. The house was situated in ... more

Advantages Advantages Interesting old town, amusing outdoor performances

Disadvantages Disadvantages Unlikely to hold any lasting appeal

Certainly not among the most visited of places in France, Avignon is perhaps best known for its famous bridge. This, the Pont St-Bénézet, appears in a French folk song, “Sur le pont d’Avignon”. There is indeed only part of it left, but overall I found this a less than spectacular sight. It is by no means worth it to journey this far just to catch a glimpse of, and perhaps walk over the bridge – it is what I experienced within the walled city that impressed me more. Avignon is not a very big town, restricted by its largely intact medieval walls (supposedly the oldest in ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Weather sometimes disappointing

The Pont du Gard has stood majestically over the River Gard in South West France for over 2,000 years. It is thought to have been built around 20 BC, with the principal purpose of bringing water to the flourishing Roman population in Nimes, from a spring 50 km away. The bridge itself is 275 meters long and 49 meters high, and consists of three tiers of arches. It served the dual purpose of carrying water as well as a roadway. It is situated in an area of truly outstanding natural beauty, and visitors are attracted not only by the extraordinary bridge but also by the cool waters of the river ... more

Whether you are staying in Provence or merely passing through, its well worth a short detour off the A8 Autoroute to visit the Maison des Vins de Cotes de Provence. This "House of the Wines of Provence" is on the old main road (N7, near Les Arcs (no, not the ski resort, this is a different Les Arcs) a little way East of Vidauban. If you thought all Provence wines are pink, this will be a revelation. They appear to have every worthwhile wine of Cotes de Provence in stock at reasonable prices and each week they offer at least six of them on a generous free tasting. Try the reds - like most red ... more
