Advantages Advantages Scenery; weather; food & drink; art; architecture; beaches; family-friendly

Disadvantages Disadvantages Busier in main French holiday; more expensive with strong Euro; not for teenagers/nightlife

Every year vast numbers of northern Europeans bypass this area en route to the ‘Costas’ and the Spanish sun. Most fly directly overhead, many others pass by on the fast motorway system. Others still head for the busier Cote d’Azur and Provence. They are all missing out. This brief review is largely based on our most recent fly-drive holiday based at St Cyprien Plage, in the extreme south of France. It focuses on the coastal area of the Pyrénées Orientales, bordering on the northern tip of the Costa Brava. The French side is officially Roussillon, part of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, but ... more

5 Stars Archdiocese of Liverpool Youth Pilgrimage Review with images 29/04/2005
    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Such an amazing, life changing experience

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Really tiring week

The Archdiocese of Liverpool annual pilgrimage to Lourdes has been dubbed throughout the catholic community as one of the best if not the best pilgrimage in the country. It is also one of the largest pilgrimages with around 2000 people making the journey each year. over 3000 of these are youth workers like myself between the ages of 15 and 25. Each year this dedicated and ever growing army of young people give up a week of their summer holidays to make the journey to the Holy shrine making the pilgrimage possible for the sick and elderly people from the docese. The Archdiocesan Youth ... more

Advantages Advantages A spiritual and uplifting place

Disadvantages Disadvantages shops sell loads of plastic icons

In writing this personal account of my experiences in Lourdes, I must point out that this my personal perspective, and I do not go to any particular church, however, I do believe in God, but I am not a Roman Catholic and therefore have no common religious affinity with the Town of Lourdes.. ~~~0o0o0~~~ I also would like to say that this personal acount is of the general feeling and ambience of Lourdes, I am not trying to put forward an argument or an authoritative travel guide, merely a piece to give an honest overall flavour of the Town...which apart from the normal shops you would expect to ... more

Advantages Advantages Motor racing is abolutely fantastic, not too expensive, nice shops

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not really a tourist town, limited places to visit

Pau is a is a large French town, situated next to the Pyrenees. It is the capital of the Pyrenees-Atlantiques departement. It started out as a small village in the 15th Century, then Gaston Febus built a chateau there and the town grew. Henry IV of France was born there in the 16th Century. In the 19th Century, Pau became popular with the British because of its mild climate, but then they transferred their affections to Biarritz. Now Pau is a university town, and it is also important in the French oil industry. The two main reasons to visit Pau are to winter sports, as the Pyrenees are so ... more

Advantages Advantages more than just beautiful

Disadvantages Disadvantages the road to get there...

O.K. don't be too harsh with me people...this is my 1st attempt. First things first...HELLO!!!! I hope you are all well and warm. ...get on with it.... OK here it is then.... I wanted to share with you my impressions of my day in the Pyrenees....i know, that's really short, but as we were staying a week near Perpignan, it was only took an hour and a half to get there. The "Cambre d'Aze" is the name of a mountain side which becomes ski-able in winter and consists of two ski stations: Eyne and St. Pierre dels Forcats. It is also beautiful in the summer. (but of course, not ski-able). We went up ... more

    Advantages Advantages Reality

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Watching people suffering

My grandmother has organised a pilgrimage to Lourdes every year for the past 37 years and has been every year apart from last year due to ill health. I decided to join her in her conquest as a helper who tends to the sick and elderly during there stay in Lourdes. If anyone out there is interested in doing this I would advise them to go right ahead no matter what faith you are. The fulfillment you get is unbelieveable. Before you depart from the airport your introduced to the person you will be helping all week. You basically start from this point, it's up to you to make sure they get on and ... more

    Advantages Advantages Beautiful, peaceful

    Disadvantages Disadvantages long...long...way from Calais

This year, we had a three week holiday, most of which was in South France, a week of which was spent an hours drive from the Pyrenees. The area is beautiful, the mountains spectacular. Describing them, I could get lost in superlatives. Just a few hundred metres on the French side of the border, we got out of the car, and climbed some of the way up them. The views were incredible. Where we had lunch, there was a peaceful lake, made by a dam, and had it not started by a cable car, we would have taken "Le petit train"-originally a workhorse, now a tourist route through mountains, tunnels, and ... more

I have been to this spectacular part of France twice now, and i have been really impressed and want to again in the near future and i am sure i will. I have visited the Pyrennes on family holidays and therefore have only been able to stay for a few weeks at a time. Next time i visit them i hope to be able to spend a bit more time there. The scenery is breathtaking and the nature is out of this world. Fantastic birds for those who are interested in birdwatching, superb flowers for flora experts. People with different interests can all come together here. There are many more attractions than the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Beautiful scenery

Disadvantages Disadvantages You'll want to go again... and again

We were on holiday in Argeles, on the Med last year, and the view of the Pyrenees was breathtaking. We took a trip up into them on the Little yellow train, or Petite Train Jaune, and I can highly recommend it. Its a wonderful steam train, and the journey takes a couple of hours, giving you chance to stop off at a resort before coming back. Each turn of the track gives you a new beautiful view, and passes some wonderful bridges, and the view of the road to Andorra makes you very glad you are on the train and not in a car! ... more
