Rio de Janeiro "River of January" is the second major city of Brazil, behind only São Paulo. Its 8 million inhabitants occupy an area of 485 square miles. There are three main city districts: Centre, South, and North. The city centre is the financial and business district of Rio. After the transfer of the capital to Brasília, in 1960, the process of economic transfer to São Paulo was increased. The summer months officially begin around November and end in March. Advantages Advantages One of the most beautiful cities in the world

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not the safest city in the world

I went on a two-week holiday to Brazil a few years ago, starting in Rio de Janeiro. The main reason for the trip was to explore the Amazon, but we had to start somewhere. Rio is often marketed as the most beautiful city in the world, but has a reputation for being dangerous and crime-ridden, so I wasn't expecting too much, but it turned out to be a stunning and beautiful place. Getting there We flew with Iberia from London Heathrow to Rio de Janeiro via Madrid, with just a couple of hours wait in Madrid. On arrival, the official Rio de Janeiro taxis at the airport are the recommended, safest ... more

They call the city of Rio de Janeiro "Cidade Maravilhosa" (The marvellous city), I have to say that visiting Rio was an eye opening and awe inspiring experience. This review is a selection of the best parts, with a few pointers on what not to do there. SAFETY TIPS ------------------ **Hotels First of all, it is recommended that tourists stay in a Hotel that is on the coastal road of Copacabana beach - Avenida Atlantico, or one of the coastal roads that run adjacent to Ipanema beach. Or choose one that only a short distance from the coast. This is because if you want to go out at night, you ... more

Advantages Advantages Spectacular, exciting and perfect for budget travellers.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Is that a knife in your pocket or are you just trying to rob me?

Rio De Janeiro ranks amongst the most exotic cities in the world. It's nature attractions are world famous and its people legendary for their party tendencies. Despite being a budget friendly city it also has appeal for those on a 5 star expense account. Like most Brazilian cities it has many problems, its ghettos are to be avoided and the city's gun culture gets worse by the day. Rio has a population of 7 million but you might be surprised to know that its cousin Sao Paulo just down the road has an enormous populace of 17 million. The city is split between the Zona Norte, the industrial and ... more

I spent 7 days in Rio at the beginning of 2010. It has always been one of those places on my "to do" list and so inevitably it was my jumping off point for my holiday to South America. ****Generally, what's the city like?**** The most immediate thing that struck me about Rio is the very evident divide between the rich and the poor. I kind of experienced the same thing in South Africa, but somehow in Rio the contrast is even more marked because the rich are so incredibly rich - and the poor so incredibly poor. There really doesn't seem to be many people that sit in the middle in the "working ... more

Most tourists tend to think of Rio de Janeiro as the embodiment of Brazil, a land with so much wealth and poverty, a land of huge contrasts. Are you ready to let down your sensibilities on this journey? If you are still readin along, then you may be ready to stroll along the world famous beaches of Rio with me. Your eyes will find the most interesting attractions, not only in the city, but also in the people themselves. Most people will tell you that Brazilians or the cariocas are vain people. Well, for having known them, I will say that they are pleasure seekers. They let the good times roll ... more

My wife and I were in Rio when the Gulf War was raging in Iraq and Kuwait, but the death rate in Rio was far higher than anything inflicted by those two countries put together. The first people we met had been robbed four times and they'd only been there three days. Everyone else we met for the next two and a half weeks had been robbed on their first day. I was very careful but I must also have been lucky. I was with someone who got robbed as we walked down the sea-front and on three separate occasions, a youth came to me demanding that I give them dollars - I looked them straight in the eye ... more

Staying in a good neighborhood in Rio does not mean you have to spend a fortune. There are a number of moderately-priced hotels right in the the heart of the South Side. All properties listed on this page are in a walking distance from a Beach with a capital B, good nightlife possibilities, shopping, transportation, and all conveniences. Rooms for double occupancy are quoted around US$85 per night or less. Budget hotels are mostly medium-sized properties, ranging from 50 to 200 rooms. You do not have to sacrifice any of the basics. Count on air conditioning, a private bath, phone, color TV ... more

Rio de Janeiro is to me one of the most beautiful countries in the world. You have everything to enjoy yourself at Rio, and one thing that you are not going to feel is bored. I know Rio very well, and I would say that if you think in holiday think of Rio. It is in the air the way the cariocas live. They are happy people! I would say it is a very informal city where you can go out in your good old pair of jeans...and there are lots of places to go. Food is one of the things you have to try...meat you can eat with no worries. It is a place or the place where you feel happy and relaxed. You do ... more

Rio de Janeiro is probably the most known city in Brazil. The statue of Jesus on top of one of the mountains is one of the main attractions together with the beaches. My advice is NOT to go to Copacabana, which is where only tourists and thieves go. Some of the main hotel are just in Copacabana and when you walk on the beach you find many fat Americans lazying around. Instead, you can go to Leblon, which is more fashionable with the young elite from Rio. Another part of Rio I liked is Barra de Tijuca, where you have a tropical forest, just in the middle of the town. I stayed in a chap but not ... more
