Advantages: One of the most beautiful cities in the world Disadvantages: Not the safest city in the world
...few years ago, starting in Rio de Janeiro. The main reason for the trip was to explore the Amazon, but we had to start somewhere. Rio is often marketed as the most beautiful city in the world, but has a reputation for being dangerous and crime-ridden, so I wasn't expecting too much, but it turned out to be a stunning and beautiful place.
Getting there
We flew with Iberia from London Heathrow to Rio de Janeiro via Madrid, with just a couple of hours ... ...are also shuttle-busses into central Rio and to many of the hotels. We had the itinerary of flights and hotels put together for us by Audley Travel (www.audleytravel.co.uk) and they had arranged someone to meet us with a driver, which was probably unnecessary, but quite useful when tired after a long flight. We did however have to put up with the usual hard sell of various additional tours on the way to the hotel.

Advantages: Beaches, gorgeous tropical islands, unbelievably great value. Disadvantages: Having to keep your wits about you, but no real problem.
They call the city of Rio de Janeiro "Cidade Maravilhosa" (The marvellous city), I have to say that visiting Rio was an eye opening and awe inspiring experience. This review is a selection of the best parts, with a few pointers on what not to do there.

Rio De Janeiro ranks amongst the most exotic cities in the world. It's nature attractions are world famous and its people legendary for their party tendencies. Despite being a budget friendly city it also has appeal for those on a 5 star expense account. Like most Brazilian cities it has many problems, its ghettos are to be avoided and the city's gun culture gets worse by the day. Rio has a population of 7 million but you might be surprised to know ... ...Of course many arrive in Rio on a package deal so this is not a problem. For others who arrive at the Novo Rio bus station in the Zona Norte without a clue taking taxi is the only reliable option. ...wife and I were in Rio when the Gulf War was raging in Iraq and Kuwait, but the death rate in Rio was far higher than anything inflicted by those two countries put together. The first people we met had been robbed four times and they'd only been there three days. Everyone else we met for the next two and a half weeks had been robbed on their first day. I was very careful but I must also have been lucky.
I was with someone who got robbed as we walked ... ...The death rate in Rio (just the one city) due to murder averaged 17 per day all year round at that time, and could be even higher now.
Backpackers and hippies seemed to go unhindered and so when we went out we dressed down and tried to look anything but wealthy.

...in a good neighborhood in Rio does not mean you have to spend a fortune. There are a number of moderately-priced hotels right in the the heart of the South Side. All properties listed on this page are in a walking distance from a Beach with a capital B, good nightlife possibilities, shopping, transportation, and all conveniences. Rooms for double occupancy are quoted around US$85 per night or less. Budget hotels are mostly medium-sized properties, ... ...to sacrifice any of the basics. Count on air conditioning, a private bath, phone, color TV, small refrigerator and closet with safety box. A few also offer cable TV channels in English. You may miss facilities like a sauna or pool (there are exceptions). You will definitely not find any hotel in this price range with non-smoking floors, a gym or a state-of-the-art business center. Rio de Janeiro is to me one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
You have everything to enjoy yourself at Rio, and one thing that you are not going to feel is bored. I know Rio very well, and I would say that if you think in holiday think of Rio. It is in the air the way the cariocas live. They are happy people!
I would say it is a very informal city where you can go out in your good old pair of jeans...and there are lots of places to ... ...try...meat you can eat with no worries. It is a place or the place where you feel happy and relaxed. You do not need to go to Italy to eat a good pizza, go to Rio. :-)

Rio de Janeiro is probably the most known city in Brazil. The statue of Jesus on top of one of the mountains is one of the main attractions together with the beaches. My advice is NOT to go to Copacabana, which is where only tourists and thieves go. Some of the main hotel are just in Copacabana and when you walk on the beach you find many fat Americans lazying around. Instead, you can go to Leblon, which is more fashionable with the young elite from ...

Rio de Janeiro is probably the most famous city in Brazil, and it deserves it. It has it everything, mountains, long beaches, sea you can swim in, luxury and shantytowns literally one 5 steps far away from the other. Favelas, the Portuguese name for shantytowns are a characteristic of Rio, perched on the hills, some of them come down every year with the rain season, and so do some favelados.
