STA travel is probably well known for their independent travel service and guides especially for students. Since most students sort of 'rely' on them, they're using this status to rip-off students with expensive prices on flights and travel deals.
Some people(students as well) may not totally agree with me on this, but if you ask most of the 'real' independent traveller, like one friend of mine, they would say ... ...considering the large newtwork they have across the globe. Being a student travel agent, they should fight for the best price, and the cheapest flight and accommodation deals for us. Yet, most of their quotes are usually higher than expected, and you can always get a better deal elsewhere..
So, students: BEWARE! Don't let their reputation cloud your judgments just because they're in the business long enough, or have established a good network. There ...

Advantages: Student Travel. Can be very good prices Disadvantages: A lot of the time I find better prices elsewhere, additionally their procedures are poor and you often end up transferring in obscure places
STA travel used to be one of those things that hardly anyone knew about. It was whispered about by small groups of hardened student travellers. It offered incredible prices and great service.
Then it became mainstream. The service levels dropped and so too the prices rose. My girlfriend recently needed to fly to America. We went onto STA's website to book a flight. After spending an hour or so trying to wade through the vast numbers of flights it ... ...nightmare trek was to pay over 150 pounds more.
STA pretends it offers the best deals out there. It has the reputation to support it, as that definitely used to be the case.
That's simply not the case anymore. You will find better deals elsewhere. Shop around online. ...

...as a student, went to STA in the hope of finding the cheapest deals. I understand that flight availability is low during the summer months but the staff in at least four branches informed me that cheap flights were still available. When I went to book my tickets I was told that there were no seats to my destination and they had been booked up months ago and there was no way I could go unless I travelled first or business class and that maybe I should ... ...go. I was annoyed at STA because they seemed so negative and I could have easily followed their advice and not gone on my holiday. My advice to others is that although STA offer cheap deals they do not always have availabilities and you should also try other travel agents who may have similar deals. ...

Advantages: The Staff are friendly and usually quite knowledgable on general places to visit Disadvantages: slow to respond, overpriced quote, bad info on routes and flights
...I was quoted 1600 at STA in ULU for a RTW ticket, but I looked around and Flightcentre undercut them by over 300 pounds!!! And they included extra flights & did it in 10 mins over the phone (was in STA for over 2 hours in 2 visits).
Students do not look around, and when they are sold a ticket with a smiley face they give brilliant reviews for STA. However I must add that this was my first experience with STA, but my experience seems to be consistent ...

...booked tickets to Thailand with STA and had to delay her flight for one week. They charged a £35 rebooking fee but failed to make the flight changes. When my Daughter arrived at Gatwick to check in by 8:30am, she discovered she was not booked onto the flight. She phoned STA for help but their office was not open and when she did speak to them (when it was too late to check in!) they were unapologetic. She must now fly at 8pm from Heathrow instead. ...

...The staff in the STA office were extremely helpful and made me aware of absolutely everything I needed to know. The trip itself was well organized, giving maximum time in Paris.
A coach arrived at Nottingham from Newcastle, then on to Dover and finally Paris. The coach itself was comfortable and well stocked. The staff were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable enough to give tips on where to go in Paris. The whole trip was faultless and very enjoyable. ...

Advantages: They can check student fares for you! Disadvantages: The fares they offer may be more expensive than standard fares!
STA is a travel company specialising in student travel. They offer cheap flights, accommodation, insurance and other travel essentials. The problem I have found with them is that they often do not quote you the cheapest price that is out there. I was recently looking for cheap flights to Europe, and thought that STA would be able to offer me the best deal by selling me a student fare. But the fares they quoted me, both from their website, and over ... ...and this was direct from the flight operator. STA often have some good deals, but don’t buy without checking all the alternatives, even if you have a pushy telesales rep trying to get you to buy the fare immediately. Shop around and you could save yourself a lot of money! ...

I booked a return flight to New Zealand with STA. Unfortunately I could not go so had to cancel my flight on the 10TH September....it is now the 23rd November 2009 and I still have not received my money back.
Who knows how much money I have spent over the past few months calling their 0871 number, and time wasted going into the Covent Garden branch, and emails sent. All I get told is 'I don't know when you will get your money' When I ask for the ... ...'I can’t give you that number' WHY NOT IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE ANWSER TO MY QUESTIONS PUT ME THROUGH TO SOMEONE WHO DOES!
And to top it all off, they want to charge me a £35 cancellation admin fee!!
This company is useless and doesn't understand customer service....DO NOT BOOK WITH THEM! ...

Advantages: Cheaper with a Youth Card for those under 26 Disadvantages: Wait time in agencies
...Covent Garden and Euston Road STA branches in London quite frequently and found I spent most of my weekend waiting for my number to be called. When I finally got served the staff were polite but the tended to be run off their feet. They planned quite a good itinery which was well negotiated with me but often rushed. I liked their endeavour to find the best possible price through providing a number of options.
My only disappointment was that on occasion ... ...when the hostel we were staying at was not quite as close to the tube station as indicated!
Since returning to Australia I have used STA again to purchase train tickets from Adelaide to Darwin and found they gave me the best deal from the travel agencies I approached. ...

STA is probably one of the best tour/travel agencies around. Just pop into their branches and you'll notice stacks of information and brochures piled up ready for you to pick them up.
Their service is incredibly good, ranging from booking plane tickets to tours. They take good care of you in terms of lodging and transport as well. So if you're desperate to go on a trip but haven't managed to find time to do the planning, pop into STA and tell them ... ...for u. Incredible.
The only complaint I have is the waiting time sometimes when there're many people. They should implement a fast lane system. Some people would like to just confirm tickets and others require a lengthy explanation and all. Other than that.. STA is the one for me! ...

STA travel had the WORST service ever. They were so slow and disapointing. I paid my deposit for the flight which should have sealed the ticket and I paid the full price for the ticket as well. Next thing you know my agent sends me an email saying that I still have to pay her 250 dollars more because the price of the ticket went up before I paid for it. And I paid for it the NEXT DAY after I booked it. This is outragous and pathetic and it was way ... ...singapore airlines website was 2000 and she wanted 2500!! So I wanted a refund and they kept trying to avoid me every time I called them and sent them an email. I was extremely disapointed with the service they offered plus the woman I was dealing with kept talking about her personal life to her co-workers when I was there. Like I didn't even exist. This was a truely disapointing experience. ...
