...We have been to Salou before and there are lots of things that I remember, but the bulk of this review will be written on a notepad while I am away and typed up when I get back.
Find below bits taken from my notes.
Where is it then?
A friend of mine guessed Greece! I always thought her geography was loads better than mine. Salou is in Spain. About 50 kilometres south west of Barcelona, on the Costa Dorada. What sort of place is it?
A huge tourist ... ...years ago we went to Salou and stayed in a noisy hotel about two kilometres outside the centre. The hotel food was pretty awful and apart from having it's own little beach right on the doorstep (literally) we were sorely disappointed. Having said that, and probably because of that, we went out a lot and had the best holiday we had had for a long time.
This year, we have had a busy time, with family living with us, and a new grandson here as well, ...

Advantages: Cheap, Hot, Port Adventura, Short transfer Disadvantages: Commercialised, Bit rowdy in places
Salou is the biggest resort and rightly claims to be the capital of the Costa Dorada, Spain. Costa Dorada which means 'Golden Coast' (very apt) refers to the 150 miles of golden sands which run south of Barcelona to the ancient city of Tarragona. Costa Dorada isn't as hot or as popular as the Costa Blanca or the Costa Del Sol and indeed isn't as exclusive as the Costa Brava but that does have it's advantages because it has a lot to offer.

Salou's main beach is four miles long with further quiter beaches and coves just around the headlands. They all face to the south-east and that is why the beaches are so warm and golden. The resort is also protected inland by the Catalunyan ...

Advantages: Port Aventura, Aquopolis, proximity to Barcelona Disadvantages: Unattractive high rise accommodation, High road tolls
Friends of ours suggested Salou for this years vacation primarily because of the presence of Port Aventura, the only Universal studios site in Europe.
Resorts include:
SALOU, a tight knit and rapidly growing area of high rise hotels, cheap tacky gift shops, bars and restaurants, very busy and not my idea of a pleasant holiday, although I would recommend Champions bar to anyone visiting, particularly if they like quizzes and raucous entertainment ... ...Season from La Pineda into Salou at a cost of 680pta (c£3.50) for 2 adults, 2 kids into Salou, a taxi (usually air-conditioned) 1300ptas (c£5.50) for the return journey if you can't cope with the long queues and sweaty bodies on the local bus service.
La Pineda is also home to Aquopolis a fabulous water park hosting a range of fun rides and swimming pools including wave machine, crazy golf, childrens play area, numerous eateries at reasonable prices ...

### Ok, but Salou is a SPANISH CITY, isn’t it??? ###
Many people, especially the British, think that Spain is only ONE nation, but they (you) are wrong. Catalonia is a different nation (Independentists say Catalonia is not Spain) and we have a political autonomy. - "The Generalitat is the institution in which the self-government of Catalonia is politically organised. ~Is Salou a Spanish city? -Yes, it is- or -No, it isn’t- (Both answers are right)
~Is Salou a Catalan city? Yes, it is, of course. (The best answer ;-D)
### Well, but you speak Spanish, don’t you??? ###
Yes, we do. I speak Catalan (my mother tongue), Spanish, some English (I must apologise for my English) and German. Under the Spanish Constitution, the Catalan language and two languages more (Galician and Basque) are official ...

...ample for your general needs. Salou itself is a lovely town with a gorgeous, long sandy beach. There are plently of facilities at the beach itself; peddle-boat hire, sun-bed and parasol hire, toilets, showers, volleyball nets, gym, ice-cream vendors and even a funfair which is open until late at night.
There are plenty of shops and stalls in the town which are definately aimed at the tourist market; watch out for religious figurines in a sea-shell!!
... ...is a must.
Beyond, Salou itself, there is ample public transport facilities to allow you to explore the region. Buses in the area are both frequent and reasonably priced; so much so that I really wouldn't bother hiring a car to come here. The nearby city of Tarragona makes for a good day out with its Roman Ampitheatre (for all you 'Gladiator' fans) and old town, and takes just 20 mins by bus to get there from Salou centre.
Barcelona is also a must ...

We stayed in the Salou Suites apartments on the main street in salou. Well, to put it simply, we didnt sleep till at least 6am every night. It was so loud and busy outside.
The beaches are lovely and very nice, clean water, but i have never in my life seen such a busy beach as the main salou beach. There is a smaller beach further round from the main one, past the cliffs and it is a lot smaller, but just as nice and quieter. Though still ... ...only place to go in salou for a good night - especially if you are scottish but even if your not - is the Rovers Return. It is on the cliffside between the 2 beaches and it is owned by a guy from falkirk called lenny. It is great for kids as well, with about 4 games a night for the kids, plus treasure hunts, bingo and quizzes that the kids can all get involved in. They show new films during the day, for example last week they were showing shrek, ...

Salou is situated in the Costa Dorada region of mainland Spain. It is roughly a two and a half hour flight from most uk airports or alternatively a day and a half from central britain on a coach. The resort is served by Reus airport, from which it is roughly a 20 minute transfer to resort. The airport is small and dingy and is surrounded by a petro-chemical plant. All the usual Spanish tacky stuff is here, plastic bulls, knock off Barcelona shirts and beach towels. I have been to Salou 3 times now and would still go back!
It is a lovely family resort and is never full of larger louts, so is idea for children or people of any age.
It has 2 lovely beaches , one main one and one more secluded, The front is packed with cafes, shops and bars and just of the main street is a beautiful view out to see, where there are a handfull of secluded bars and reataurants.
Also down the main front there is a fun fair and ... ...short ride on the little train that goes up and down is Portaventura, which is a huge theme park with every ride going!!
Also on certain days there are street markets with many a bargain to be had.
The food is excellent and cheap too, with plenty of variations, such as chinese, greek, italian, indian, and British of course for the less adventurous!!!
Its certainly worth a visit, and Barcelona is only an hour away by bus, as it Tarragona with its ...

...holiday with my fiancee in Salou in Oct 03. Salou is the biggest town in the Costa Dorada region and occupies a long stretch of the coast about 5 miles long. We were a bit worried about going to mainland spain at this time of year as we were unsure about the weather, but it was a late deal and it was cheap so we went for it (£225 per person , half board . This offer was from teletext holiday pages)
Salou on arrival was bleak and grey, it wasnt disimmilar ... ...just right for me. Salou is spread out along the coast and has a wide, long front running parallel to the beach and this is where most of the shops and resteraunts and pubs and clubs are. The layout makes it easy to have a relaxing stroll and it is easy to find your way back to anywhere, just turn around and head back for the main front. There are loads of differnt sorts of shops, all the usual holiday souvenir ones but also clothes and music stores ...

...you could not come to Salou during the summer without having a fantastic time. I was there late this summer with a group of friends and even though it was well into September the place was buzzing and there was never a shortage of people and atmosphere at any time of the day or night. Last yer i went to Salou for the first time. I can honestly say it is the best holiday i have been on in my life. There is plenty to see and do including a water park called aquapolis and of course the famous theme park Porta Ventura with its 8 loop roller coaster the Dragon Kahn, huge indoor simulater (which is amazing.) and many more rides and shows. Advantages: Lots of attractions, Port Aventura, nice beaches, lots of hotels, restaurants, 1hr from Barcelona, a bit more unusual that the usual Spanish holiday resort Disadvantages: Can get very got in peak season, monsoons occasionally (we had the misfortune to have one whilst we stayed and it was the most rain I have witnessed in my LIFE!)
I visited Salou on Spain's Costa Dorada in May 1996. A lot of Salou is fairly "concrete jungle"-ish but there are lots of nice parts too. The beaches are lovely and clean and full of clear blue medditerranean ocean. The main town centre of Salout is fairly small but not tiny. There are shops, restaurants, a funfair, and a lovely promenade walk alongside lots of very tall palm trees on either side. ...time I have been to Salou and I enjoyed myself, we came here for our honeymoon, as we always get bored on holiday we wanted to go somewhere with something to do, and as Salou has the big adventure park Portaventura we thought it would be perfect. i first went to salou in 1995 with my three kids and my wife,it was our first holiday abroad.we stayed just on the outskirts of salou in a place called la pineda, and i have to say it was like heaven.we stayed in appartments called cye marina, they were pretty basic but the view from the fourth floor balcony was stunning.
we stayed for two weeks and went into the centre of salou on at least seven occasions.the centre of salou is full of palm trees ... ...and 1999 we realised that salou was becoming more popular with the british tourist and in a way it has spoilt salou because when we went in 1995 it was nearly all french and german tourists with spanish and belgian as well.four years on its all english and irish so if your happy to go abroad and meet people from home then you will enjoy salou but my mind yearns for 1995 when this place called salou was a piece of heaven set in costa dorada.the place ...
