I visited Salt Lake City in 2002 with my friend, Melissa, who I met at University, and who I was staying with in Washington State at the time. Her aunt was having a mid life crisis after divorcing her husband at 50 something. Melissa's Dad decided it was a good idea if we went to visit her 'to cheer her up' and paid for our flights for a three day trip. I wouldn't personally have chosen it as a 'must see' desination but it was a free trip! Salt Lake ... ...ways.....

Advantages: Relatively inexpensive, beautiful surroundings Disadvantages: Rather limited attractions if you are not an outdoors type
Please just chalk this up to local pride, but the previous reviewer was not entirely accurate in his descriptions of visiting certain areas of the city and what goes on in them. Regarding the consumption of alcohol beyond beer, it is available at numerous state-run liquor stores around the city and at dozens of restaurants. It is true that there are no "bars" or pubs in the sense that you can go in and order stronger alcoholic drinks. These are private ... ...anyone else entering who is a member to "sponsor" them. No fee is charged to visitors.
Regarding caffeine, it's completely untrue that there are areas of the city downtown where soft drinks like Coke are not allowed (except perhaps within Temple Square itself, but even then unless it's in an obvious can no one will care). It's simple to buy coffee in the mall food court across the street from the temple itself!
