The Stunning City Of Salzburg

Advantages: beautiful scenery, superb transport system, lots of things to see
Disadvantages: restaurants close quite early, not much veggie food

...a 5 day trip to Salzburg in Austria. I bought Jamie the trip to Austria as a present for his last birthday. Here I am reviewing the city of Salzburg. Getting there I booked my flights with Ryanair through the website which I found fairly easy to use. Baring in mind I actually booked the tickets in July 2006 so that prices may have changed since then, but I paid £87.02 for both of us for return flight which I thought was very reasonable. We flew ...
...same thing. Time Difference Salzburg in Austria is only 1 hour ahead of GMT so jet lag was not a problem. Currency The currency in Austria is the Euro. Getting Around Salzburg I have travelled to quite a few places and I have never come across a better transport system than the one in Austria. Although taxis are available I would not recommend this method of transport to people although we did get a taxi from the airport to our hotel when ...

Salzburg, the sound of Mozart...music

Advantages: Stunning scenery, wonderful place
Disadvantages: not any

...just over 40 years. Salzburg has it all, the music story, wonderful, old, historic buildings and the majestic mountains bordering a lovely, open rural plain. 'The Festival City and its beautiful surrounding countryside' - that's what my glossy tourism book says and I agree through and through. My winter visit was magic. Snow was not as predominant as it usually is in February but enough on the stunning mountains to add the feeling of winter turning ...
...be precise he entered the Salzburg scene at 8 o'clock in the evening on the 27th day of January in 1756 at number 9 Getreidegasse and one day later he started the tourism trend by going to the Cathedral and gaining the honourable name of Johannes Chrisostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart at his christening. With such a musical name it was always on the cards that he would take the world by storm and create 600 musical pieces from little arias to ...

The Hills Are Alive... with the sound of Mozart

Advantages: In the sun, one of the most beautiful cities on earth...
Disadvantages: ... but in the rain it's nowhere near as good...

...I have been to Salzburg many times on day trips while on holiday in Austria, but until recently had not actually stayed there (though it was only for 3 days). Unfortunately the weather for those three days was not kind, but this did give me the impetus to explore more of what the city itself had to offer. You can't move in Salzburg without being reminded that it's the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - although the city spurned him while he ...
...b/ if you have a Salzburg Pass. More of that later. Other places worth seeing are the palace residences, which feature some of the most gorgeous and well preserved surroundings I've ever seen, and the HoenSalzburg, Europe's oldest completely intact fortress, which dominates the surroundings wherever you are in Salzburg. The tour is interesting, showing you how the fortress was altered by successive Archbishops, how Salzburg developed from a small ...

Visit the lovely town where Mozart was born

Advantages: lovely town, beautiful scenery, a lot of history and culture
Disadvantages: sometimes crowded (mainly in August)

Salzburg is a lovely town in Austria, with a population of less than 150,000. It is the birthplace of Wolfang Amadeus Mozart. I have been there a number of times and I will certainly go there again. For many centuries, Salzburg was dominated by the Prince-Archbishops, and you can still see many signs of their power nowadays. The name Salzburg can be translated as 'Salt Castle' and it refers to the castle which overlooks the whole town (Hohensalzburg) ...
...of Salzburg which has contributed to the richness of the population (in particular of the Archbishops). The most important and recommendable sights where I have been to are as follows: THE OLD TOWN You can see most of Salzburg by just walking around. Situated on both sides of the Salzach river, you can see a lot of lovely buildings, parks and the main shopping streets. The Cathedral, located at the Domplatz, is a very nice 17th century building ...

Fairytale City

Advantages: clean, lovely, accessable
Disadvantages: not cheap on a student budget

I visited Salzburg this summer (2001) as a part of a backpacking summer trek around Europe. It was intended as a short and convienient stop-over between Munich and Budapest. In many ways, the sole motivation for us visiting was that the train timetables worked out. That, and the fact that there was a youth hostel there. Having experienced the grey anonymity of Munich, the train ride south was very pleasant and green. The scenery was lovely all around. ...
...could find out why the Salzburg inhabitants are called ‘Bullwashers’. Topically, it is written on the side of a huge bull statute. The view over the city is fantastic. The city is in a little river decline between three large outcrops of mountains/hills and looks fab from up at the castle. The only criticism of this place is that it seems a little as though it is waiting for Christmas. One of my new ambitions has been to visit this beautiful ...

...famous for .The experience of Salzburg is incomplete without exploring its surroundings.Another advice is always take a guided tour 'coz it provides u with lots of insight 'n helps u in understanding the finer points ,history ,importance 'n uniqueness of this geographical location else everything may seem to be just brick and mortar.Even tho' these tours r quite expensive well its worth every penny (or is it euro). Some of which I highly recomemnd ...

Sound of Music as this place forms the backdrop for this movie. This tour not only takes u to the places where some famous scenes/songs of this movie was shot, but also escorts u into surrounding traditional charming Austrian villages(dont ask me those names those r quite cryptic to remember) ,sparkling crystal clear lakes 'n mountain district where one can ...

My home i miss you...

Advantages: Beautiful town, lots of culture
Disadvantages: Not many

...to write a review about Salzburg - the town i lived for 21 years. Salzburg used to be my home before i moved to the UK so i know lots about this very pretty part of Austria. There are so many things to see that you certainly won't get bored on a holiday in this town. Let's see what Salzburg is famous for: 1. "The Sound of Music" One of the most successful musicals of all times was shot in this town. Remember Julie Andrews and the "Van Trap" ...

Don't forget The Sound of Music too

Advantages: Very picturesque town, Lots of cultural things going on, friendly locals
Disadvantages: Can see everything in a weekend, not cheap, very croweded during the festival

...know about that aspect of Salzburg (very worth visiting for) then I would advise reading Michael-S's opinion, which describes most of the major sights far better than I would hope to do so. Added to what he says, I would point out that the Franciscan church performs a Mozart Mass at 9am on Sundays (at least it did on the week we were there) which is well worth going to, if only to hear the music as part of a Mass, as it would originally have been ...
...Ryanair does direct flights to Salzburg airport, only 1/2 hour by bus from the train station, very cheaply (we got a £4.50 one way flight). The town itself is very walkable - at most 1hr to get anywhere. We stayed in the "Jugengasthause" youth hostel, which was very reasonable and fine for our purposes. Breakfast was included in the price (£8.50 a night) and there were 8 people to a room. Everyone was very friendly to us (despite it being a tourist ...

Good Clean Salty Fun

Advantages: In op
Disadvantages: Ditto

...Vienna so headed over to Salzburg for a few days. Saturday was spent in the centre, doing all the sites and, well, a bit of shopping too. On Sunday though, we left the city and went to Hallein, a little town about 40 mins away, on a special ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) trip. We paid 289 Ös (maybe 14 GBP) and for that got return train travel to the town, 2 x ~ 20 min trips on a Cable Car and entry to a celtic village along with a tour of a salt ...
...travel from and back to Salzburg Main Station. I would 100% recommend this excursion. It’s much more economical than doing the parts separately and is lots of fun. I can imagine that if you were in a wheelchair you might have problems, and children under 4 are not allowed in the mine, but apart from that it’s suitable for everyone. How To Get There From the station, follow the Bahnhofstrasse to the first main junction and then turn right. ...

The Beautiful Salzburg

Advantages: This may make you want to see Salzburg yourself
Disadvantages: I don't think there are any

I have been to Salzburg 3 times, all in December. The first 2 times I went was with my Secondary School on ski trips in Schladming which is about a 20 minute drive from Salzburg I think. Austria is an excellent place to ski; the views from the mountains are just amazing. I skied down the Planai hundreds of times which are, if I remember correctly the highest or steepest down hill slope in the world (that you can ski down); please correct me if I ...
...I visited other places in Salzburg but I can't remember the names or exact places, all still very beautiful though, especially the castles. I have only been able to attach a couple of pictures as the others are too large to upload, shame as there are some reallly lovely ones. I hope you enjoyed this short read. I strongly recommend visits to Salzburg. In Fact, I think the whole of Austria is 100% worth visiting; I would absolutely love to go back ...

Vibrant, elegant and impressive

Advantages: Elegant, accessible
Disadvantages: Bloody huge gilded cherubs

Salzburg is an elegant city in Austria about ninety kilometres from Munich, in the foothills of the alps. You can fly there with Ryan Air from Stansted for as little as £4.50 if you get the right flight. Most people know Salzburg as the home of Mozart and The Sound of Music. Luckily, the city makes more (just enough) of the former and not quite so much of the latter. There is much more to do, though. There are many fine churches and cathederals ...
...side of the river. Salzburg is also excellent for food and shopping. If you need a hotel, try the Wolf-Dietrich Hotel which has the only (so far) accredited organic restaurant in Austria and very fine it is too. Its on the web and they speak English, so if you have read this, you can find them too. Enjoy. PS. I enjoy comments . . . ...
