Advantages: Nice clean modern airport Disadvantages: Lack of Duty Free
...trip from Las Vegas to San Francisco proved to be uneventful. That was until landing. San Francisco Airport (SFO) is built right at the edge of the bay. In fact, It could be safe to say, in the bay.
As we decended, I looked out of the window and saw the ocean. It was getting bigger in the window.
It was getting very close to the wings and I thought "we are about to ditch in the sea here"
Anyway, faith in your pilots is what was required as they ... ...about 10 miles from Central San Francisco, to the south.
There are 2 sets of hotels here.
One set by the airport. Handy for stopover flights but not much else.
One set in the City. Good for sightseeing and tourism but not handy for flying.
They operate a shuttle bus to and from the Major hotels and Airport. It costs $12 per person and its door to door service. The driver knows where he is going and is friendly enough.
Hire cars and taxi are ...

Advantages: A nice airport to travel in and out of Disadvantages: Quite far south of the city, approach to landing is a bit scary
San Francisco airport is pretty quaint as far as airports for major cities go. Upon my visit there it was pretty quiet, pretty relaxed and a very nice change from airports like Heathrow and LAX.
There is lots of thought for the passenger at SFO. There are plenty of walkways, and if you’re lucky enough to only have hand luggage your passage is a pretty smooth and easy one. There are nice shops, souvenir outlets and places to eat as well as terminals ... ...the airport is south of San Francisco. Quite a way south in fact, so it is quite a long way to get into the city itself. And if you’re flying in from the south don’t expect to see the city from the air, because it won’t happen.
Secondly the approach to San Francisco is not for the faint hearted. I have heard legends about places like Hong Kong, but San Francisco wasn’t ideal for a nervous passenger like myself because on your descent all you see ...

Advantages: Big, serviced by numerous airlines, good selection of restaruants/bars/shops to pass time Disadvantages: Big, weather affects air traffic, lots of people
...don't come prepared.
Second, San Francisco can be an extremely quick airport if the weather's nice, or a painfully slow airport if the weather is bad. SF has to deal with some pretty nasty fog at times that can really slow things down, so again, come prepared.
So here's some advice for flying out of SF -- do your research before getting to the airport. Check the weather forecast because that is what affects the traffic at SFO more times than not. ... ...Area airports -- Oakland and San Jose -- that can be used to fly into or out of the Bay Area. Both of which tend to experience fewer delays and less volume. Depending on the airline, using one of these other two can save you some money as well.
The other thing to be aware of is to stay away from the solicitation booths where people can set up shop and try and sell you religion or other things. They look somewhat like information booths, so keep ...

Advantages: Good location, easily accessible Disadvantages: lack of shops
I have flown into and out of SFO on two separate trips to the City.
My first experience was flying out after a 6 day stay and initially flying into LAX. It was a reasonable experience. I booked a hopper bus trip back to the airport from the Fisherman's Wharf area near the bay. This cost about $16 - expect to call at other hotels so leave time for the journey (about an hour with 3 other pick ups). I was checking in to fly out with BA. Check-in was ... ...to get to. The airport was easy to navigate in general. After check-in I had to go through security before getting to the departure lounge - The security checks were very thorough, even had to take shoes off, but necessary in my opinion. The departure area in general is lacking shops - the usual ones we'd expect in UK airports. It is possible to get a drink and something to eat but at a price. I was lucky enough to have access to the Executive Lounge ...
