An operatic tragedy

Advantages: decor is different
Disadvantages: food, service, no non-smoking section offered to us, tasteless washrooms

...of my fiancé's colleagues recommended Sarastro to us as a nice restaurant for our anniversary. He said that Sarastro boasted both a romantic atmosphere and a vast selection of delicious seafood on its menu. As we approached the establishment, however, which is located just off Covent Garden in Drury Lane, we started to have our doubts. It looked a little bit too hidden. While the menu looked alright, a peak inside through the glass doors have us ...
...and flamboyant feel. Sarastro was named after one of the characters of Mozart's "The Magic Flute". ***Ambience and décor*** The restaurant looked a lot more inviting from the outside in the summer than it did during the grey winter months. Sarastro is decorated with lovely colourful flowers on the outside, giving it a spring-type and refreshing feel. We approached and entered the restaurant without actually checking the menu again. The impression ...

Naughty but nice

Advantages: Great food, central location, interesting toilets! Dramatic
Disadvantages: If you dont like classical music it could put you off as its all they play

Sarastro is based on Dury Lane in London's Covent Garden area. Its a well known restaurant among the theatre going community and as such is a great place to go for either an early meal pre your show (around 6pm onwards), or a late meal afterwards (anything up to 11pm) The first thing I should tell you about Sarastro is that it is themed as an opera restaurant. Instead of normal tables in rows, when you walk into Sarastro you will see high off the ...
...Sarastro I ate at Sarastro pre theatre for my birthday. We had booked tickets to The Mousetrap at the St Martins Lane Theatre, and Sarastros early table was a blessing. The restaurant is very opulent, lit by candles in places, low lit by uplights in others. The music they play is purely classical music which sets the atmosphere of the place. The food is modern European with a mixture of pasta, meat dishes, salads and sea food. As we were slightly ...

Rubbish

Advantages: none
Disadvantages: many

we found sarastro's on our honeymoon- it advertised that it was a perfect place for an after show meal. We booked into the restaurant to eat after our evening performance of phantom of the opera and arrived on time for our booking. Very disappointingly the waiting staff were ruid and hurried us from the moment we arrived. They came to take our order after 5 minutes and when we asked for a couple more minutes they said 'no- the kitchen is closing'. ...
...and the table we were sat at was dirty. We were served mineral water from a cheap plastic bottle that still had the price on. We were not offered the dessert menu and when we asked we were told it was too late. We had eaten much later the evening before in another theatre land restaurant. Finally on leaving we asked for a taxi and the manager only offered to take us home in his own (unlicenced) car for a cost of £15- dodgey. Very, very disappointing- ...

Great for post-theatre fun

Advantages: Fun themed restaurant, great location
Disadvantages: Gets busy so service can lapse

...Garden and open until late, Sarastro is the perfect pre or post theatre stop off. The prices are as you would expect for this part of town and the restuarant knows it can keep packing them in, so the standard of food is variable and can be sub-standard. Nevertheless I would still recommend this as a London experience which you must try at least once! ...
