Advantages: Excellent for those who like whisky! Disadvantages: Expensive, could potentially cost a small fortune!
...before I came across the Scotch Whisky Experience which is located pretty much right next to the castle. Since we generally tend to visit places that I want to visit, hubby was really happy to hear that I’d chosen an attraction with him in mind.
I visited the website - http://www.whisky-heritage.co.uk – and was eager to book us onto the tour. However, when I entered the date for our visit it came up that the tour was under reconstruction. It turns ... ...as it's certainly called "The Scotch Whisky Experience", rather than the "Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre"!
== Arrival ==
On arrival at the Scotch Whisky Experience we were pleasantly surprised to find out that the tour refurbishment was complete after all – excellent stuff! I should note that at present you still can’t book online, but I’m sure that very soon you will be able to. While it wasn’t necessary for us, I would imagine that certainly during ...

Advantages: excellent presentation, free dram, fascinating Disadvantages: only one free dram?!
The Whisky heritage centre in Edinburgh,is, as far as I am aware, the only centre of its type in Scotland. Of course, there are plenty of whisky distilleries in Scotland, where you can learn how whisky is made, and usually get a free dram, but this place is very different, and very entertaining. It cost me about £4 to get in last year - that was student rate. Considering that a free whisky is included in this price, I thought it was good value. There ... ...the ticket which you can use to save money off of a bottle of single malt in the well-stocked shop.
When you start the tour, you are given the free whisky whilst you wait for it to begin, this puts you in a more relaxed mood for the rest of the visit! The tour round the heritage centre takes about an hour in total. Firstly, you are given an explanation of how whisky is made. For anyone who has been to a distillery or two, this information will be ...

Advantages: lots of information. GREAT value for money Disadvantages: at the top of a hill, not the most expensive whisky available to taste
...give you information about how scotch is made with the help of a light-hearted, low-budget yet informative and enjoyable video. Then onto a mock-up of a distillery and presentation on the methods of whisky making and distilling. Questions are taken.
A ghost of a master blender was projected onto a screen and he told us the secrets of blending. It was a little tacky but informative and the tour guide played along with it. You get to go on a "barrel ... ...whisky-making from humble beginings to a world religion! The waxworks and stuffed dogs are unrealistic and the tempataion to pull down the socks on the models is excrutiating.
I learned an awful lot. It was extremely good value as it has answered questions such as "what is a malt? single malt? blend? does whisky age after bottling?" I am now considered a connaiseur amongst friends (even by one who managed to give himself an alcohol-induced gastric ...
