Advantages: Quieter than French resorts. Disadvantages: Not a great record for snow.
...to opt for Italy instead. Sestriere is one of the higher Italian resorts, so we chose it to try and maximize our chances of good snow.
It's based in an area called the Milky Way, which comprises Sestriere, Sauze d'Oulx, Sansicario, Claviere and Montgenevre. You can buy lift passes for each individual area, or a pass that includes all the Italian areas (everywhere except Montgenevre, which costs an additional premium). The town of Sestriere is not ... ...the town is the traffic. Sestriere is on a main mountain road that goes on to more resorts. This means that there is often quite a bit of traffic, which makes the walk back in ski-boots at the end of the day a little treacherous. Especially with those Italian drivers!
On to the skiing! We were very lucky with the weather, having had lots of snow in the weeks before we went, and clear blue skies for the whole duration of our trip. The runs in Sestriere ...

Advantages: Snowmaking facilities, relaxed skiing, Winter Olympics resort Disadvantages: Only 50% pistes open
I have just come back from a week's skiing in Sestriere. The resort is situated in the Italian Alps quite close to the French border. I was a bit worried about the snow and weather reports before we went but at least 50% of the runs were open but it was not possible to link up with the other resorts in the famous Milky Way.
However, as an intermediate level skier, I found plenty of enjoyable red runs in and around the resort. The resort is relatively ... ...suffered from breathing difficulties because of this. The resort is going to host the 2006 Olympics and there was quite a lot of building work in progress which did tend to have an adverse effect on our enjoyment of the scenery.
We travelled with Equity Ski, who offer an all inclusive deal. The transfer from Turin airport is relatively quick at one and a half hours. We stayed in the Cavaliere hotel which was a 15 minute walk away from the centre ...

Advantages: Reasonably priced, good fun Disadvantages:
Sestriere is a lovely village in the ‘Italian Alps’ close to the French border, it is on the ’Milky Way’ ski area and has access to 350km of piste. It is good for beginners and all grades, the nursery slopes are easy to get to and easy to use. The scenery is beautiful, the people are nice and the prices are reasonable. It advertises the fact that it is on the ‘milky way’ and therefore has much more to offer than a lot of places, but be aware that ...

Advantages: Vast Ski Area, New pass system, Value for money Disadvantages: Not snow sure, Gets very busy at w'ends
...Ski area that covers the Sestriere and Sauze'd oulx resorts.
The area is big, around 400km of piste to cover, which even takes you into france, if you can bare the long lift journeys in between. The skiing in the area is also very expansive with plenty of runs to test advanced down to beginer level. But it is at the intermediate skiier that the milky way is aimed at, with more red runs than you could shake a stick at. However after going there twice ... ...long drag lifts and black runs)
On a better note The area has had a new lift pass system that scans you as you go past, (so no more elastic passes hitting you in the face) and the towns of Sauze and Sestriere are livly and good value for money. ...
