I'd never flown Singapore Airlines on my long-haul flights to and from New Zealand, my home country, and now I must ask myself why? I have used three other major airlines and they definitely do not come anywhere near the service and comfort of Singapore Airlines.
I flew at a busy time, four flights to and from Kiwi Land early December (2005) and late February (2006) so all trips were a full plane and this I believe is a good time to judge ... ...and this I achieved in Singapore Airlines. When I checked at the counter I asked could I claim them at that point in time and the lady said I could; after sighting my credit card she did the computer work on the spot and the deed was done.
I had to book-in three hours before the flight at Heathrow and it was just as well I was early as the queue was long; I got into the snakelike behaviour which the ropes dictated and it was not too long before ...

...last time I flew with Singapore Airlines (SIA) was more than 10 years ago. On that fateful flight, the plane was delayed many hours, due to 'unforeseen technical problems'. They boarded , and unboarded (alighted) us many many times and did not even have the courtesy to provide the passengers with refreshments.
On top of the delays, there was the food poisoning incident when I flew with them from Hong Kong to Singapore. Did I mention they are also ... ...ever flown with. Fail not, Singapore airline has topped the worse airline I have ever flown with, with some qualification that is, from a developed country.

I flew Singapore Airlines, in economy, on the first two legs of a round the world trip with Star Alliance. They were without question the best two flights of the trip, and among the best flights I have ever taken (and I have been flying regularly since I was an infant).
My route with SA was Manchester to Singapore, then after a four day stopover, Singapore to Auckland. I flew out on Thursday morning, which is the one day of the week when SA flies ... ...rest. We had very friendly Singapore Girls (and a few Singapore Blokes!), and they were attentive. The crew (including flight deck) changed in Zurich, and the new crew was equally good. Call bells were answered promptly throughout the flight, and service was always with a smile. They were very helpful with my seating problem, and I had a few nice chats with some of them.
ON-BOARD COMFORT
Apart from the problems that I already mentioned, which only ...

Singapore Airlines fares are definitely a shade more expensive than say BA or any other leading airline that flies to Singapore, but remember you have paid a premium and you are getting an excellent service. On average you will pay over £4,000 for a first class ticket (return) from London Heathrow (Term 3) to Singapore Changi Airport, but "oh, my, god!" it is definitely worth it. Singapore airlines is part of the Star Alliance which includes airlines such as Quantas, BMI & Air Canada. This often means that you could have booked a flight on Quantas to go to say Sydney and turn up to your departure gate and find that you have a Singapore Airlines plane - Bonus!
A benefit of the Star Alliance is that if you are collecting your air miles and you fly any airline that is part of the Star Alliance, your ...

Singapore Airlines as we know them now them only came into fruition in October 1972, which makes their name relatively new in the world of long-haul travel. The history of the airline can however be traced back to 1947 when Malayan Airlines began operating internal flights within Malaysia. ...and to my great surprise Singapore Airlines fitted the bill (literally). I was previously not going to include the price because of me travelling from Dublin to London on another airline, but I have been asked to include it, so I will! We flew Singapore Airlines to New Zealand to visit family and were going to a wedding. We decided on Singapore Airlines because Singapore was located more or less in the centre of London and Auckland.
We boarded a 747-400 at 22:00 GMT, right on time bound for Singapore in a flight that took 14 hours. The friendly crew made this flight feel shorter than my flight to Thailand with Thai Airways.

We arrived in Singapore at 19:00 local time. The airport was fabulous! Changi was the only airport I had ever been to with a Koi Pond and Garden in the centre of it!! Aswell as that, there were free internet terminals and a large selection of shops. The whole place was kept clean, which of course ties in with Singapores clean lifestyle.

Advantages: Knowing you're flying with the best Disadvantages: Always fully booked
Reading a few opinions written by other Ciao-ers made me realise that there is nothing new that I can really add as to what travelers can expect from SIA but my personal testimonials.
If SIA's CEO is reading these opinions, he could not but help thinking that he's almost god in the flying world ... And he wouldn't be too wrong.

And even now, unless SIA does not fly to my destinations, I will always choose to use it. Ok, so they are not the cheapest around. However, as I have to fly long haul at least twice a year, I find that the extra £50-100 is definitely worth it if I mean I could survive being couped up in a flying shoebox, with recycled air circulated around me, breathing in other passengers' germs for over 12 hours and still come out at the other end ...

Advantages: Compared to similar airlines, everything Singapore do is an advantage Disadvantages: in comparison to others, nothing really!
...I have travelled by Singapore Airlines (SA) a few times now on long haul flights to Singapore and Australia and am pleased to give the emphatic thumbs up for this airline. Long Haul flights are testing enough for the most well travelled flyer, but consider the amount of stress and tireness that the air host/esses go through. You wouldn't even know that the SA host/esses (OK hosts for the purpose of this post, its a bit naff having to type that constantly!) ... ...their stride.
THE PLANES & SEATING
The planes are always new, clean and well-presented. The SA colours are burgandy, gold and green (if I remember corectly) and the decor has a cosy but sophisticated air to it. The seating is much better than most (I'm talking about economy here by the way!) with better leg room and comfy seats with squidgy head rests that you can wrap around your neck. Lets face it, sitting in the same seat for hours without being ...

...The main emphasis of Singapore Airlines has always been on service. Off course many airlines offer you good service but what about those little things that you can only experience if you have flown with them.
