Advantages Advantages Interesting town, great weather, good base to explore the area

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Traffic and pollution

Sorrento, on the west coast of Italy, south of Naples, is an ideal holiday spot, whether you want to lie on the beach all day or get out and about soaking up the local culture. The scenery is absolutely stunning from the volcanic black sand of the beaches to the craggy cliffs overlooking the bay. In the height of Summer the temperature is pretty uncomfortable for most Brits, and the heat is quite draining even in September when I visited. The average temperature was around 30C (it had been over 40C in July), so sun screen, hat, and plenty of water to drink are essential items for a day by the ... more

Sorrento is located about a 90 minute coach ride south of Naples. Once you have escaped the urban sprawl of Naples the winding coast road gives you some beautiful views of the Gulf of Naples on your right whilst all the time the imposing height of Vesuvius is receding behind you. Sorrento is often regarded at the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. It is a bustling unashamedly tourist dominated Italian town with a population of 20,000 people which is swelled to bursting point in the summer months. Our visit came at the end of August and the first week in September and coincided with the last weekend ... more

Advantages Advantages Pleasant old town, beautiful scenery

Disadvantages Disadvantages Few proper beaches, inflated prices

When it comes to travel I have permanently itchy feet. Even when I'm on holiday I just can't satisfy that itch and so when I get back home I often feel that I haven't done justice to a particular destination. My holidays lately have been based around touring an area or making my base in a good central location and taking day trips to nearby places. Sorrento was one of my must-visits when in Naples for a week earlier this year. An easy to negotiate hour or so train journey from Naples (only 25KM but stops everywhere), Sorrento offers a very pleasant alternative to the hustle and bustle of ... more

Advantages Advantages Very friendly and great food!

Disadvantages Disadvantages I don't go often enough!

I love to travel and experience new places. Most I've been to, once has been enough, after all, the world is a big place. But with Sorrento, I never tire of the place. I've visited six times now and will probably visit six more, then six more again. Just like the song says 'Tourna a Surriento'. SO WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES ME WANT TO RETURN AGAIN AND AGAIN? Thats a good question. Theres more than just one single thing I suspect there are a few other people who have written reviews expressing their passion for the area who can relate to my thoughts about the place. THE CLIMATE Most times we've ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent, inexpensive public transport

Disadvantages Disadvantages Traffic is very heavy don't even consider a hire car

Eight days in St. Agnello, Sorrento, Italy. We have just returned from a very successful week in Sorrento. Arriving at Naples Airport we took the regular bus service to Sorrento as far as St. Agnello which is once stop before Sorrento itself. The journey time should be one hour and the single fare was 10.0€. Having poured over many reviews of hotels in Sorrento area we chose the Alpha and found it to be the Alpha and Omega of Hotels. We couldn’t have asked for anything better; from the moment we walked through the front door we could see that we were going to like it. We were met by a cheerful ... more

    Advantages Advantages Scenery, cultural.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Too hot.

The best holiday I ever had was in Sorrento. It is a truly magical place that I will never forget and I hope to visit it again when I can afford it (it wasn't a cheap holiday). I stayed in a hotel called 'The Sorrento Palace' which was absolutely beautiful. The first time I walked into the hotel my mouth just fell open because I had never stayed anywhere as grand as that. It has a six-tier pool, several restaurants and bars, a gym, and a small shop. The bedrooms are air-conditioned which was nice because it was so hot while I was there. The most memorable parts of my stay here were: The food ... more

    Advantages Advantages beautiful, romantic

    Disadvantages Disadvantages dishonest tour operators

Having visited Sorrento on my honeymoon I would highly recommend it. The place itself is very picturesque, with plenty to see and the food is delicious - I returned home a few pounds heavier! There are plenty of cafe's and bars to choose from and contrary to popular belief the cost of eating and drinking in Italy is not that expensive. There are many organised tours to take advantage of, but I would suggest that you visit the sights by yourself. We unfortunately fell into the trap of booking on to all the organised tours, later discovering that we could've done it ourselves for a quarter of ... more

Advantages Advantages A wonderful place, Ideal for site seeing

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

Ever heard the phrase "See Naples and die?" well who ever first said this must have just landed at Naples airport! The landing was scary! One minute I was looking over the bay of Naples pointing out Capri and Ischia to the old man the next I was practically eye balling a woman in a tower block hanging out her washing!! This was my introduction to Italy, I can truely say this was the only bad thing about the holiday! The old man and I visited Sorrento on an Airtours bargain -£199 half board at a 4 star hotel!! Sorrento is a magical place, forget the image of it being for pensioners and folk ... more

Advantages Advantages Lots to see, reasonable prices,

Disadvantages Disadvantages noisy hotel on main street

Sorrento. Landing at Naples Airport then a coach to Sorrento and our hotel in the older part of this city. At first sight an impression of narrow streets and pavements, when there are any, houses, shops and other buildings packed tightly together. The journey along and round the Bay of Naples gives a foretaste of this area of Italy. The mountains on one side and the road as you near Sorrento running along the side of the cliff, if that's how you describe the mountains that drop down to sea level. The streets of Sorrento are busy, noisy and narrow with buildings three to four storeys plus high ... more

We went to Sorrento with my parents ( both just in their seventies at the time ) , staying in a little hotel up a steep side street just off the main road . I wont go into hotel details , as this is intended to be more of a piece about the Sorrento experience Sorrento town itself is quite unremarkable ( except for the ice cream shop which has around 80 different flavours . If you ever get there , you MUST try the Ferrero Rochas one ) There are the usual pavement bars , little cafe restaurants and shops , but nothing much to do apart from sit and watch the world go by So we didnt ! We escaped ... more
