Trains - the way to travel?

Advantages: Clean, friendly, I go free!!!
Disadvantages: Delays

...father is a driver for South West Trains (SWT) and has been for the last two or so years. Because of this, I get to go free anywhere on the SWT line and anywhere in the UK for 25% of the total fare! SWT provide a good, clean service from as far west as Weymouth to as far east as Warterloo. However, if I had to pay the going rate, I wouldn't travel by train at all. I find that most of the Trains are late, even on short routes to small stations, ...
...travel by train on the South coast then SWT is your only option. They do get you from A to B in a reasonable time so I guess that’s the main thing. I would avoid using them during the mooring and evening rush hour as the trains WILL be packed. My tip to you is to take your own food as the buffet service is very expensive. ...

Advantages: Most of the trains arrive on time
Disadvantages: The other 30 or so percent are late

...up having to get a South West trains train from either Clapham Junction or Wimbledon to Kingston Upon Thames. Why oh why is it that the day I am running early the trains arrive on time and that when I am running late it is almost guaranteed that the train will either be 10 or more minutes late or cancelled completely? This morning the train was in desperate need of cleaning; there were newspapers strewn throughout the carriage I was in, a used condom ...
...as far as Kingston but South West trains operate the lines from Waterloo to such destinations as Portsmouth Harbour, Shepperton, Richmond Upon Thames, Esher and Guildford. I find the station staff at Wimbledon and Kingston very unfriendly and incompetent. A couple of weeks ago the platform announcer announced that the train drawing into the platform was for Dorking so none of the passengers wanting Kingston got on. As the train drew out of the station ...

...the need to use a South West Trains service from Surbiton to Weybridge and also travel occasionaly into London Waterloo from Hampton Court. When i travel from Surbiton the trains at peak time are frequent - every 5-10 minutes. The station staff do help but sometimes are busy dealing with other procedures. South West Trains - London to Exeter line

Advantages: Clean, efficient, friendly staff
Disadvantages: not enough frequency to some stations

I use the South West Trains service between Salisbury and Tisbury, and Salisbury, Tisbury and London Waterloo frequently. The old diesel trains have been refurbished, and are very comfortable. They are still quite loud, but quite smooth. They are always immaculate, and punctual, and the staff are great. There is always a buffet trolley, which is well stocked and is reasonably priced. The fares are quite good as well, especially if you've got a railcard ...
...to Salisbury is much cheaper than the bus. The only problem is frequency of the trains stopping at Tisbury, as they only stop once an hour, which can be frustrating. However, trains running every half hour to London from Salisbury is great, as it means that you never have to wait too long. ...

Trains, bunch of arse

Advantages: Cheap sometimes
Disadvantages: never there when you want one

I’ve always said that its not the Train Company’s fault that trains don’t run on time, but I’m sorry I was wrong! You really do have to sit back and wonder how Mr Branson made all of his millions when he seemingly can get a train from point A to point B in an allotted period of time. If the fact that they are never on time, (I once had to wait for almost three hours for a train, and when I boarded the train finally I was ...
...to sit here and wait for another hour and a half because the train that I should be on and have travelled on, on numerous occasions does not seem to be running! It’s not as if I’m a train novice as I do travel on them around three times a week but it just winds me up that you never seem to know about changes until after they have happened. The staff at stations however I have up most respect for as I expect they have to deal with irate ...

UPDATED!The best TOC

Advantages: Value for money, new or refubished clean trains, reliability
Disadvantages: NONE

...South West Trains have been running a media campaign for the last year, (whcih will continue for 2 more years) which basically is, getting the message across that you must buy a ticket before you board the trains. Failure in you doing so, will result in you paying a penalty fine. You then risk being prosecuted through the courts. All in all, I do think that South West Trains have made evey effort to make buying a ticket easy for you. THE FREQUENCY ...
...this is what I will be talking about mostly. There are over 40 departures an hour from Waterloo, to places from kingston to Southampton, to Weymouth To penzance. Elsewhere, trains are quite frequent, but the further out from london you go, the less trains there are. For example. On average. there are 4 trains per hour from woking to waterloo.. then if you are at weymouth, then the trains are every half an hour from there. FACILITIES FOR THE DISABLED ...

Is South West trains improving?

Advantages: Getting better service, quick to London
Disadvantages: Less stops at smaller stations

...want to seem harsh on South West trains. Until 2 years ago almost all their trains were slam doors and they have invested huge amounts in bringing their fleet up to date. The idiocy still remains of last minute platform changes, short notice cancellations and big delays when the slightest thing goes wrong, but it does provide me with the quickest way of getting to London i can think of from my home in Guildford. The seats are comfortable, the trains ...

Thank you Mr. Souter for nothing

Advantages: It did actually get to Waterloo
Disadvantages: I needed to mortgage my home to get the ticket

...system, I can choose between South West Trains and Stagecoach (aka South West Trains) - oh, well never mind. Whilst it sticks in my throat to line the nasty little bigot Brain Souter's pockets with even a penny, there was little other way to get to London today without the train. Overcrowded, cold and extraordinarily expensive (£47 for a day return from Southampton to Waterloo - I could drive there and back three times for that much!). At least ...

It is depressing in general to take a train

Advantages: If you don't own a car
Disadvantages: It isn't safe!

...week commuting to London with South West Trains I'm depressed. A seasons ticket costs £60.-! Really, have you seen the carriages? They are so old! I'm embarrassed when I have to get in because I nearly have to sit on a passenger lap to get in. Normally it should take me 25 minutes to get to Waterloo but it takes more than 40 minutes. I hope SWT didn't forget that we are in the 21st Century now! ...

don't expect a toilet that works!

Advantages: good aircon, quite good service
Disadvantages: don't expect a toilet that works

SWT are a reasonably good rail company. Their staff seem to be quite polite and efficient, their trains are mostly new and I don't have too many complaints about their reliability. Their stations are also quite acceptable and they have a big network. Cleanliness is also pretty good. But, why is it everytime I travel on a SWT train, the toilets NEVER work? The new trains, with their fantastic air con, which is a godsend in the summer, are nice. ...
