    In May of last year I was fortunate enough to be part of a work incentive and received two complementary tickets to Male with Sri Lankan Airlines, having visited Male the year before for our wedding anniversary we decided to return this time for my husband's birthday. ~*~About Sri Lankan Airlines~*~ Sri Lankan Airlines are the national airline of Sri Lanka operating out of London Heathrow and launched in 1979.     UPDATE 4 SEPTEMBER :Re-write coming soon: I would like to say that SriLankan has now pretty much returned to a service level that it will continue with for about a year, and there is more information on their revamped website accessible on www.srilankan.lk. Their fleet now comprises of seven aircraft. UPDATE 30 JULY SriLankan have now confirmed the loss of three aircraft - two A330s and an A340. And three are damaged but apparently repairable.     Advantages Advantages Great Food and Crew, Comfy Seats, IFE is Top Notch!

    Travelled economy from LHR-CMB-SIN (London Heathrow to Colombo to Singapore). Aircraft: A340-400 Sri Lankan is now handled by KLM at Heathrow and although their attitude was quite indifferent at check-in, it was a totally the opposite when onboard. After being greeted with Ayubowan (traditional Sri Lankan greeting) at the door and taking my seat, I was given hot towels before the flight took off (I've not seen this done in 'economy' on another airline).     I have travelled on at least 30 different long and short haul airlines including budget airlines but the only one I will never ever fly again is Sri Lankan Airlines. I flew Sri Lankan Airlines from London to Malaysia in July 04. First of all we were told to reconfirm our flight but the phone lines were either continually engaged or if you did get through you were put into a queueing system for a long time. At Heathrow there were only 3 check in counters serving the entire flight hence check in really did take 2 hours of queueing . The flight was completely full hence the cabin staff could not ... more

    I must add a contrary view to the 5* opinions of Sri Lankan Airlines. We travelled with them recently and had a variety of problems. We were due to fly from Sri Lanka to the Male in the Maldives at 0700 (and pick up a connecting sea-plane to the resort). However, the day before we were due to fly we were told that the flight had been re-arranged to 0500, so we missed most of our night's sleep. However, that was only the start of our problems.     Having travelled to Sri Lankan with Sri Lankan Airways in October this year, I was pleasantly surprised with the on board service and the actual aircraft layout itself. I travelled on a 11 hour direct flight from Heathrow to Sri Lanka and sat on an economy seat. The seat itself was very spacious, with a seat pitch of 33" and seats had adjustable head and arm rests for extra comfort. Formation of seats was 2-4-2 and allocation of seats was pre-bookable at the time of booking. Staff on the flight were very friendly and were keen to meet my every need.     I flew Sri Lankan from TRZ - CMB - DMM. This was an unplanned trip where I had to make certain changes to my itnerary and had to take an airline available to make it home. At Trichy Airport ( Souther India) - I noticed the pleasant groud staff of Sri Lankan dressed in red. Now usually the airport (which is tiny) is served by Indian Airlines staff, but I was anyways surprised to find UL Staff. Well I was tagged and sent into the boarding area, where I noticed a small plane, that actually looked huge because of the airport's size.     Advantages Advantages OK food I guess

    Disadvantages Disadvantages I never would have paid for the flights they stuck us with.

    We booked tickets from London to Colombo and Singapore a couple months before our holiday and choose Sri Lankan because they were slightly cheaper than others. A month before the holiday they cancelled one of the flights and rescheduled the remaining flights without giving us any option for a refund. The flights we were left with were horrible (9 hour layover and a long haul flight leaving at 4am) and we were forced to take extra time off work as the new flights arrived on Monday morning. We would NEVER have agreed to the flights that were forced on us and definitely wish we had paid a bit ... more

    Unfortunately last December I had to fly Sri Lankan from Colombo to Frankfurt and return. In both ways they did not give me the food I wanted. the crew does not know "customer service and Hospitality.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Uncaring, incompetent, old planes and not working in flight entertainment

    The airline was a disgrace. Our honeymoon flight out was dogged by an old, leaking plane ( the airconditioning, I think, leaked liquid onto me during take-off and landing) incompetent staff (how hard is it to get my wife a vodka and tonic? Not gin and tonic, not vodka and soda, not vodka and coke...) and a very faulty entertainment console/screen. It is a long flight from the UK to Sri Lanka, so I wan not amused when I was asked to try 5 different pairs of headphones to sort the sound out, and even less amused when my screen went blank, never to work again.
