Advantages: Comfy seats, good selection, non-smoking Disadvantages: Quality of coffee, prices
...Starbucks***
I remember when Starbucks was a relatively new thing. I just loved the place! Whenever somebody suggested grabbing a coffee at Starbucks, I would get all excited about the special treat that would await me. My personal special treat would be a Grande Caramel Macchiato. Pricey, but it used to be worth it for sure.
The bigger Starbucks got, the more the quality seemed to be dropping. I remember buying my expensive treat from time to ... ...is, I stopped going to Starbucks altogether.
Over the last week, however, having arrived at for various inductions too early, I have been semi-forced into a Starbucks opposite of work. This morning, sitting in a comfy chair, my eye caught the following sign on the wall:
"To protect the quality of our coffee, we ask you not to smoke"
As a non-smoker I was really touched by these words. Whilst Caffe Nero, my favorite coffeehouse, serves the best ...

Advantages: Competitive priced Coffee Disadvantages: Taste and Priced not as good as Caffee Nero
Starbucks is a well known, almost global coffee brand. This chain of coffee shops are fully company owned. The price of coffee per metric tonne is approximately £883 a tonne. So for coffee shop stores there is a very high profit margin to be made.
I was travelling on my way to Crawley and as i was in London Victoria i noticed a burger type van advertising Starbucks. I thought to myself i have been to Starbucks before lets see how they fare.
Firstly ... ...was in a take away Starbucks plastic cup. Anyway, the coffee was served nice and warm. What i did not like about the coffee is that nearly 10% of the coffee served was of unecessary froth. Certainly unhealthy. Despite my health concerns of coffee as a mainstream and widespread coffee available in fast moving restaurants and brand outlets and also supermarkets. The price of the coffee sold is another important factor. I paid £2.40 here from Starbucks ...

Advantages: Nice looking place Disadvantages: the prives
...can really do this at Starbucks because the seats are so comfy! It was one of the main reasons why I had to go and check this place out. People were talking about how comfy the seats were for a café, and how relaxed the atmosphere is in there. As soon as I walked in I could tell it was slightly more classy than the other café’s in my town (not hard though). It was modern, had a nice seating area downstairs with a fair bit of room, and upstairs ... ...comes cost. This applies to Starbucks on quite a shocking scale. This is when I tell you that I have only been there a couple of times because of the costs. The surroundings in Starbucks must have cost a lot of money, and to get this money back, their products are sold at high prices. I do not remember exact prices as it a while ago since I went in, but I do remember that I did not get any change from a fiver for buying two coffees and a chocolate ...

Advantages: Plentiful Disadvantages: The More you ignore me the closer I get
...you do not go into Starbucks for the Coffee and definately not the food - over priced and by most means underflavoured - but for the variety of Insurance workers that populate Starbucks-CGNU during their lunchtime. In Norwich we have the chess players, a game for those that have never forgotten the abysmal cartoon 'Dungeons & Dragons' but keep some vigil for Star Trek Next Generation bollocks, one has dark hair and looks Polish and the other dresses ... ...most beautiful of them all is the propensity to sing Macy Grey numbers, but at least not Travis. Maybe I should talk about the coffee, but then this is Starbucks and as I said earlier you do not go there for the coffee.
It is not very Loud. ...

Advantages: Heavenly taste, huge range of coffee (incl. soya milk varieties) and an atmosphere that oozes cool and sophistication Disadvantages: Can get packed in there, the foreign staff sometimes have a hard time conversing, and you need to be a millionaire to go regularly
...Republic became well-known. Starbucks is the epitomy of cool, with comfortable seats, soft music and an incredibly classy atmosphere despite the commercialisation of the chain as a whole. I adore this place, with one huge exception - the prices.
Even in an expensive city like London, they are astronomical. A 340ml latte costs £1.75.. but admittedly, the taste is out of this world, and the mocha frappachinos are like nothing you have ever tasted ...

Advantages: Big Brand Name - Consistency Disadvantages: Consistently poor coffee!
Starbucks is alledgly the market leader in expresso bars, and is certainly dominant in the states.
However, their coffee is weak, sandwiches are expensive and cakes are hard!
I used to really enjoy drinks from the seattle coffee company, which starbucks took over last year. The staff tended to have a good sense of humour and level of service was generally better.
This all seems to have changed since the takeover, and Coffee Republic now seems ...

Advantages: A great relaxing place to hang out with friends to drink and chat Disadvantages: Very pricey
I am a regular Starbucks customer. I go there at least once a fortnight. I'm not too sure if that is good or bad considering their reputation (extortion prices, monopolising capitalists). I do try to avoid the lure of the delicious coffee aroma floating around the streets of London, but I always end up waltzing (not literally!) to the counter, and placing my order.
I tend to stick to the Cappuccinos and Frappuccinos. I once ordered a Hot Chocolate, ... ...I don't purchase food from Starbucks anymore, but for the few I've tried - Paninis. It's about £3 for just a piece of heated Italian bread with filling, but they are really nice!
Sandwiches - Taste really bland. You're better off going to a supermarket or an alternative place to buy sandwiches. Muffins - Look delicious - and are! But you're probably better off buying ones from the supermarket, since they're about £1-2 each. A tip for you to get ...

...and dearest.
I think Starbucks is rather like marmite, you either love it or you hate it. Some people hate the fact that they have to pay £3 for a cup of coffee, other people can't get enough. I am definitely in the second camp, I am a Starbucks fan. I think what has captured the world is their relationship with coffee, they like to think of their stores as a "third place", ie the third place you go in this world after home and work and I think ... ...sense of belonging that their houses promote.
The store in St Katharine's dock is a beautiful building, it is a round, almost mill looking type building with a dome on top and has two floors. It is fairly small but there is quite a bit of seating with lots of nice comfy seats upstairs. THe same people have worked intheir for a long long time so they recognise you and are always nice and polite. The view is probably the best thing about this location. ...

Advantages: £10 cup of coffee Disadvantages: They don't sell things that cost less than a fiver
...pay £10 for lunch? then starbucks is the place for you. why not come along to this capitalist organisation of expensive coffee and sandwiches and spend loads of money to help feed the fat cats of this society. They have loads of other things you can but for outrageous prices as well such as chocolate and 'authentic' south american music cds.
If you didn't get the sarcasm above, what I am trying to say, is that starbucks is a major rip off with their ...

Advantages: for non smokers it's smoke free Disadvantages: price, ambience, noise, service, poor coffee
Ok so Starbucks may have re-invented the coffee bar, but that's no justification for its exorbitant prices. Their coffee is weak and the sandwiches and pastries are awful.
When you consider the competition they have now, like Coffee Republic (the best), to Caffe Nero (great coffee and great toasted sandwiches) and Costa Coffee to name but a few, I don't understand how Starbucks manages to sucker so many people.
I would far rather walk a few hundred ... ...than walk into a starbucks which really has nothing to offer that their competitors don't do better.
As a smoker I like to have a fag with my coffee and all of the bars I've mentioned permit smoking - except Starbucks. Maybe their prices are higher because people want to pay for a smoke free environment? Even if I didn't smoke I still like a more personal, friendly service and that's what I experience in all the coffee bars - except starsucks ...

...occasions, and the new Starbucks retains the spaciousbness and lovely wood -panelled walls of the old establishment. quite a contrast from the other Starbucks I've been in: Baker street and Bayswater are both pretty pokey. the ones in Borders bookshops tend to have more space, but are souless and grubby and I hate Borders anyway. The Carnaby Street branch looks OK. All coffee shops come up with the staple coffees, latte, capuchino, black and white, ... ...Caffe Nero and McDonalds but less so than Costa. It doesn't put out drinking water like Caffe Nero. It doesn't provide internet access like like Coffee Republic and McDonalds and if you want to read the paper you have to buy it.
It does provide more expensive sticky pastries than the others, if that's your bag. And the other thing is sprinkles, vanilla, cinnamon , chocolate, etc., but why would you want to ruin a cup of coffee with those?
The staff ...

...of other smaller chains. When Starbucks first bought Seattle Coffee Company a couple of years back and started changing the decor, I thought they were tacky and very over-priced, particularly based on my experiences of the New York branches. These seemed to me like the McDonald's of coffee, not somewhere I'd think of grabbing a brew and chilling out.
But...my opinions changed. Sure the food is still pretty bad, and extremely over-priced, but the ... ...too high! The thing about Starbuck's that does it for me is the comfy sofas and most importantly the plethora of plug sockets at any of the shops with one of those large basement areas. I learnt the other day that they've actually put these in so people can plug-in their laptops and mobile phones if they're working away with their coffee. As I'm often in town between meetings with an hour to spare, it's not a bad place to plonk yourself down with ...

There happened to be 2 Starbucks put in on the street I was working on. Knowing the reputation from the US I assumed good products at affordable prices. It all looked and seemed very nice indeed the coffee was good, but at what cost? It's another nice trendy London thing that is too expensive, a nice coffee should not cost 4 times as much as an average coffee. It all tastes nice enough, but not at the prices charged. It's good if you're out to impress ...
