New Zealand's diverse, cultural history

Advantages: Wonderful way to see New Zealand way of life, past and present
Disadvantages: None

...Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. You will need at least a morning or afternoon, better plan on the whole day. I've been to Te Papa, as it is more usually called, several times and every time I go there I see something different. This is mainly because they have set exhibitions but there are ever-changing long and short term special exhibitions to focus on. We took my grand-daughter to one called ` Inside your Body'.` (I think I remember ...
...I love Te Papa because it belongs to all New Zealanders and in that respect a lot has gone into presenting how the country has evolved, both before and since settlement. The Maori influence is extremely accurate and reflects the part they have played in the countries history. You can move around in the Maori marae where culturally their way of life is well worth experiencing. Artwork depicts New Zealanders lives in many forms at Te Papa and expect ...

Te Papa - New Zealand's fun filled museum

Advantages: Fun, educational, entertaining, hands on
Disadvantages: Very big (can't see it all), can't take pictures of exhibits

Te Papa Tongarewa museum ("Te Papa" or "Our Place" for short) is New Zealand's national museum and is right in the heart of Wellington next to the docks. If you only have time to visit one thing in Wellington, visit Te Papa. Many of the collections are online, so if you can't make it all the way to New Zealand, then have a look at the web pages instead. Originally dating from 1992 (or 1998 for the present incarnation in its iconic building), this ...
...earthquakes). I've been to Te Papa twice - once in November 2006 and once in April 2009, and so can recommend firsthand that it is worth going again even if you've already been - there were quite a lot of new exhibits that weren't there the previous time that I went. The most exciting of these new exhibitions was the colossal squid - it's worth going to see this alone. You get to see the preserved squid itself, as well as learning about its origin, ...

Quick review of Te Papa Tongarewa (Museum of New Zealand), Wellington

The "Te Papa Tongarewa" museum is a must see for any visitor to Wellington. It is multi-level and there is literally no way to be able to see the entire museum in one day and truly enjoy and appreciate it. The displays of green stone, the canoes, the marai, the sealife exhibit, bird calls, motorcycles, and various different art pieces will keep you informed and entertained for hours and hours. Something not to miss would be the excellent and filled with variety bookstore containing everything from an incredible selection of books to green stone and bone carvings and T-shirts, manuka honey candy and plenty of other souvenirs for tourists that are a step above the trinkets found n other souvenir shops. I can't describe it in detail that can impress like the actual museum, but you will not be disappointed!! ...

The Museum

Advantages: Lots to see and do, brilliant garden to explore outside. Plan for two half day visits to get most out of it. And its FREE.
Disadvantages: On 2nd floor have to pay to 'experience' rides. Maori folk tale rather than scientific facts.

Had a Lord of the Rings expo on at the same time - informative, however, ends on April 20th 2006, worth a visit if it tours around. The rides which can be experienced on the second floor are to go with; Past Future Not scientifically based, however, are fun for the kids. Not worth an adult going on them alone. They were about $14 per adult to go on both rides. Could also experience for payment; a bungy jump sheep sheering water skiing on ...
...at the time. It was $6 for the bungy jump experience, and then either $2 or $3 for the others. Shop inside the museum which compared with other shops, was ok value for money. Museum does not open till 10am in the morning ! Museum right on the harbour front. We tend to walk everywhere anyway, so walked around town, and to the harbour. You'll have to get a taxi or bus from the airport as too far into town - taxi approximate cost = $25 to $30. ...
