Teotihuacan is an absolutely massive archaeological site that pre-dates the Aztecs. They thought it had been built by giants, and celebrated it as a sacred place, but who actually built it (and whether or not they were on the tall side) remains a mystery. The whole site is set around the Avenue of the Dead, and we entered at one end of this. Again, we can thank the Aztec's mistakenness for the name, since they believed (wrongly) ... ...site - there's more to Teotihuacan than just two massive pyramids, y'know.
* Obviously (?) the site is not wheelchair-friendly, but the children who had been dragged along seemed to be enjoying themselves, and there's lots of things for them to see, and places for little ones to run around easily, though they would need help with the actual climbing given the sheer size of the steps.

Advantages: glorious pyramids! enchanting, amazing, beautiful landscapes Disadvantages: few food and drink options so bring your own!
...mostly just about facts about Teotihuacan do give you a bit of an overview of the place. If facts and a little history are what interest you then it may not be so bad. Bear with me as i think this is the longest opinion i have written so far.
Teotihuacan is a magical place full of power. It is no wonder it used to be the site of many Aztec temples. Teotihuacan is where a group of Aztecs lived and worshipped their gods. This place is full of ceremonial ... ...When one gets to Teotihuacan and first goes towards the pyramids one will notice that there is an avenue running north-south. This is called the Avenue of the Dead. At the north end of the avenue is the Pyramid of the moon facing south. To the south west of the Moon pyramid off to one side of the Avenue of the Dead is the Pyramid of the Sun which is much bigger than that of the Moon. Advantages: Weeellll if you're there then I guess you really should see them Disadvantages: Not the right place to go if pyramids are what you want.
So you're in Mexico City. Everyone is talking about Teotihuacan, the pyramids. You're probably very excited to go. I had already been to see the pyramid down in the Yucatan at Chichen Itza so I know that I really wanted more.
Despite the fact that I can speak Spanish, I took an organised trip there. It's not expensive and usually it'll include a trip to a tequila making factory and a visit to see the relic of the virgin Guadalupe (mentioned in my ... ...very impressive but your guide will grudgingly tell you about how they were found. They had been forgotten and covered in earth. People thought they were great hills. I believe vast quantities of dynamite were involved in their discovery.
Listen carefully and they'll tell you that any part of the buildings that are red are reconstructions of the original buildings. Walk around. There's a lot of red and not much else. In fact both the pyramid of ...

Advantages: Incredible, breathtaking Disadvantages: Very hot, lot of walking in the Sun!
Teotihuacan is breathtaking, as soon as you walk onto the sight, you are overawed by the size of the pyramids.
It is worth getting a guide to explain everything to you as the site is so huge, and there is a lot of interesting history and explanations about the site (good descriptions in the review above). Some practical stuff - it's cheaper to get a second class bus that Mexicans use than a tourist bus, these go from the Eastern bus station.

The site is huge, so don't underestimate the amount of time you'll need, and try to avoid the hottest times of the day, between 12pm and 2pm. Taking children could be difficult, due to the heat and amount of time it takes to climb the pyramids.
There are a lot of hawkers - as mentioned above - learn to say 'no, gracias' to ensure they don't follow you around!
