Advantages: Amazing people, lovely kids, making a difference Disadvantages: Sad state of affairs, heart-breaking to leave
...RAINY SEASON:::-
We went to Thailand at the end of the rainy season, and we saw some amazing storms. Not at all like English rain. One drop of this rain and you're wet through. It's like liquid marbles falling from the sky. One day we were in the middle of Buriram shopping for food and it started to rain heavily. We thought it would be quite an adventure to walk home in the rain (about 2 miles), and so we set out. I think that within the first 5 ... ...3 months I stayed in Thailand I was sick about 6 times. Again quite a crazy experience!
-:::BURIRAM:::-
I'm not sure I can recommend coming to this place just to see it. There are some nice places here, I especially enjoyed the night market, but I'm guessing that this town is pretty much like any other non-touristy town in Thailand. They have a snooker hall and a few nightclubs and that's it I think!
-:::THE ORPHAN KIDS:::-
We were only at the ...

Advantages: Has it all. Disadvantages: Be aware of scams.
Thailand for me has everything you could possible wish for. One day you could be partying until 7.30 in the morning then the next you could be wandering around a temple only hearing the occasional gong or wind chimes. With just a one and a half hours flight from BKK you can be on the Paradise Islands of Samui, Phuket etc.
I would recommend leaving the usual tourist places for a while and traveling out to the more rural areas such as Chiang Mai, ... ...kindest and most generous people I have ever known. Some people I have met have had nothing, but still managed to give me a gift to remember them by. Wherever you go people are always willing to help, give you a smile or a wave as you pass on by.
All year round the weather is warm, only getting cooler in the north. Even during the monsoon season the rain is warm and the showers don’t last very long. The food here is amongst the strangest you ...

Advantages: Beautiful scenery, friendly people, uninterrupted sunshine.....I could go on, and on, and on..... Disadvantages: The mosquitos - I have no advice - they either love you or hate you.
...a general opinion piece on Thailand and this was the only heading that it fitted under. So, here goes...
I travelled to Thailand in the summer of 2000 for a hotel break in Pattaya (South East) for 3 weeks. Due to a number of totally unforeseeable circumstances (well, unforesseable according to the travel agents) we were totally devastated with the town that we were staying in. (see my opinion on 'Pattaya' for more details of our grissly fortune). ... ...went out and found the Thailand we were looking for. The Thailand that I am referring to is the 'beach' aspect of the country. Made so famous, of course, by the dramatisation of Alex Garland's novel 'The Beach'. I wouldn't be happy until I was stranded (well, at least close to) on a beautiful desert island, surrounded by palm trees, turcquiose water and white sand. This was the reason I chose to visit the country in the first place - and being very ...

Advantages: Beautiful natural scenery, friendly locals, VERY cheap Disadvantages: Parts becoming slowly more commercialised
Thailand really is a country which will change the way you look at the world. I have personally visited this country twice to date and during my time there saw many different sides to the country and what it has to offer. The most important to thing to understand about Thailand is that, although the majority of the country still reflects the original natural beauty that the country has to offer, some parts are slowly becoming very commercial in terms ... ...locations for anyone travelling to Thailand and it is fair to say that most tourist do make a stop off here at some point. The first time I visited this island tourism was only starting to creep in and, although it was already far more tourist orientated that most part of Thailand, western culture was yet to really seep through. The second time I visited this island, a mere two years later, alot had changed. It was simply more geared towards looking ...

...is to the South-East of Thailand just across the water from Cambodia. Not as popular as the South-westerly islands of koh samui and koh pan-yan. Before I left on my trip to Thailand I asked around at the usual places (such as travel agency, doctor's surgery and Pharmacy) to make sure that I would be safe, against the dreaded mosquito and deadly malaria. Even although I stated I would be backpacking for around three weeks I was assured that I would ... ...true!!There are certain parts of Thailand you have to be aware of being exposed to Malaria, the North - being more humid - and the South East - in particular Koh chang - I didn't know this and went to Koh Chang for a three night stay and was bitten pretty badly. When I got home, fortunately for me I only had the jet lag usually suffered when on a long flight, but, was advised that koh chang is one of the high risk areas for malaria!!!! Pretty daunting!!

Backpackers - running out of money in Bangkok. Getting visas, money transfers or just dont have time to go too far? It's worthwhile getting out of the hot hellhole that Bankok can turn into and go stay in Kanchanaburi for a couple of days. Everything is cheaper and its a relaxing change from the city if you dont have time to make it too the beach.
Its easy to reach by train from Bangkok Noi station (note not the bigger Hualamphong Station)which ... ...around 10 Baht. Also minibuses leave from Khao San Road.
See the Bridge over the river Kwai, eat some tasty cheap food (much better than most cheap eats in Bangkok) try a floating disco down the river and go on a river boat ride for a real blast of speed. Then go back to Bangkok. Worth a couple of days and you'll have spent less cash. ...
