Advantages: Quiet, Relaxing, Good Food, Reasonably priced Disadvantages: Don't go here if you are looking for night clubs and discos
...I spent two weeks in Thassos at the end of June/beginning of July 2006. We had a wonderful and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a quiet relaxing break in the sun.
The Journey
We have been to a number of Greek Islands before, but had been put off visiting Thassos because there is no airport and you have to transfer to the island via ferry. Don't let this deter you. The transfers in both directions are extremely well organised and ... ...island at the port of Thassos Town, where you board another bus for between 15 to 30 minutes to arrive at your hotel. In our case this was The Socrates (Another Original Name :-)) in Skala Prinos. You arrive with only your hand luggage as your cases are collected from the airport seperately by truck, which then drops the cases off at your apartment. We were a little concerned about this at first but I have to say it worked very well and our cases ...

Advantages: great beaches, good food Disadvantages: a bit of a journey to get there
I visited Thassos a few years back, but was so impressed with it, I felt I had to write a review to encourage others to visit.
We went to Thassos on one of those last minute package tour holidays with Thomson's, and only paid £175 each for 14 nights, in a self catering studio apartment at the Glyfada apartments, just outside Thassos town.
A bit about the island:
Population: 16,000 Thassos lies 10km off the coast of mainland Greece. Its nearest ... ...good spot for bee-eaters.
Apparently, Thassos has been permanently habituated since the Stone Age.
After a long and tumultuous history, Thassos belonged to the Romans, Macedonians, Egyptians and Turks, but in 1912, it was united with Greece. However during WW2, it was occupied by the Bulgarians.
Thassos has had a history of gold mining, and more recently oil has been found off shore.
The main town of Thassos is Thassos town, or Limenas as it ...

Advantages: Quite, yet lively as well. Disadvantages: Someimes a little on the hot side.
Seven days on Thassos which felt like seven weeks we did so much. A few pointers for others heading that way:
1) Garden Studios, Thassos, is well located, but the rooms in the back block are incredibly airless. No aircon, but no fans either. Poor design means nights of passion-sapping heat that never goes away. Head for the verandah for a cool night (or if you don't want to share the twin room no more!), but mind those mozzies. Bottom line: pay ... ...3)At the back of Thassos town there is a walk up a hill to a high point from which you can watch the sunset. This is a MUST. Catch it on a good evening and it will be an unforgettable experience. But take a torch to get get you down again, or wait for the moon, or sunrise over the sea behind you the next day. Believe me, once you are up there, you wont want to come down. And watch for the prehistoric altar for Pan on the way up.
4)Best place to ...

Advantages: More like the real greek island with a hint of commercialism Disadvantages: May be too quiet if you are a wild child
We went to Thassos about 8 years ago so things may have changed a bit.Let's hope not for the worst. We flew from Manchester travelling in early September. After arriving at the airport we were taken by coach for a 1/2 hour dirve to the ferry crossing to Thassos island.
We were not particularly looking forward to this as it's the first one we've done and were expecting delays and hassle.I am pleased to say it was totally painless. We were dropped of ... ...road on the outskirts of Thassos town. Our studio was ok but the downside was there was no reception or staff if you had a problem.Unfortunately one night I did as my husband took quite poorly. There was me wandering the road(yet again!)trying to find a phone.I did find one at a garage and the staff were really helpful but did not speak much english.Problem was neither did the doctor at the receiving end so a mobile phone would not have helped.Must ...

Advantages: History on your doorstep. And that RED WINE. Disadvantages: Had to come home.
We decided on Thassos this year, we were going to go to KOS but that fell by the wayside due to the XL Failure that dragged KOSMAR down.
So as THASSOS is the most northernly of the Greek Islands we chose to go in June, normally we holiday in May.
On the run up to the holiday I kept checking the weather to find in May the tempretaures were in the 80's and sunny days, would it change.
As it turned out we had two weeks of wall to wall sunshine.
... ...to be on, the Blue Thassos Ferry, and how long before sailing.
We had 35 mins, so time for that first Cold MYTHOS Beer at one of the water front Tavernas.
The ferry crossing only takes about 35 mins. There seems to be a tradition of feeding the Seagulls as the ferry sails along, they keep flying alongside.
You dock at Thassos Town or Linemas as the local name is.
You are then either Bussed or Taxied to your accommodations where you willl find ...

Advantages: Very relaxing Disadvantages: Maybe a bit too quiet
...husband and I went to Thassos with another couple in July/August 1999. I'd been to a few Greek islands before (the "big" ones - Corfu, Crete, Rhodes, Kos) and my husband had only been to Rhodes. He had a bad experience in Rhodes and so hadn't fancied going to Greece again, but when our friends booked for Thassos and invited us along, he decided to give it a go and we booked on.
The flight was only about 3 and a half hours to Kavala, on the Greek ... ...the centre of the capital, Thassos Town. However, once away from the harbour, we were struck by how quiet it was.
Our studios were about a 10-15 minutes walk from the town centre, but this didn't mean it was quiet - there's one main road that runs round Thassos and we were next to that! The main road is in very good condition, although they were still tarmac-ing part of it while we were there.
The beach was sand, leading down to shingle at the ...

...at the George Hotel in Thassos Town for one week in mid September 2004. Although the George Hotel is very basic (more like self catering apartments without the self catering facilities!), it was kept spotlessly clean. We were on B&B basis, but didn't have breakfast there so can't comment! The pool is gorgeous, as is the pool area and pool bar. Lovely family run atmosphere - again very clean. The pool bar isn't always open late (10:00 p.m. onwards), ... ...all the other bars in Thassos Town. If you go to the Atlas Bar, look out for a gorgeous cat called Rabbit! If you get one of the front facing upstairs rooms (2 floors) you will have a lovely balcony overlooking the pool. As it is in the middle of the town (which is very small and quite quaint), you won't get any spectacular views. The hotel is right in the centre of town and has all amenities right on its doorstep (supermarket, chemist etc). However, ...

Advantages: Sun, sand, sea and the Greek hospitality. Disadvantages: Having to come home.
Thassos is a lump of rock sticking out of the North Agean sea, it is very similar in appearance to most of the other Greek islands with one exception, it is greener and has a lot more trees. There are very few inhabited islands near this island and as it seems to straight up to a point and then back down to the sea, there is no room on the island for a airport. It is quite a small island and the perimeter of the island can be driven in about 90 minutes. ... ...and to venture of the main road you will need a four-wheel drive vehicle as you are going into the mountains and much rougher roads.
I went to the island about 4 years ago, I think it was 1999, and it was my first holiday in Greece and what an island to start with. As there is no airport you need to fly to Kavala international airport, it is about a 3 to 4 hour flight depending on wind speed and direction. There is then a 10 minute coach journey ...

Advantages: A nice holiday with the family, and have time to relax! Disadvantages: The weather can be unbearable, but its a great excuse to take a siesta!
The Greek island of Thassos is one of the hottest of the Greek islands, experiencing temperatures of way over 100 degrees! I went last year in August and had a great time. Thassos is more for relaxation and spending time with others, its great for spending quality time with the family or just getting away! I stayed in Crystal studios near golden beach. The scenery is beautiful, but the altitute was quite high as it was quite a rocky place! The thing ... ...so it was really dry and dusty! The dust gets everywhere and is worse than sand! The people who live ther water the ground to keep all the dust away, but it doesn't work!
Now to get to the food, I didn't think it was that impressive, as there were quite a few greasy spoon type places, obviously for tourists! The Greek people are VERY insistant that you go into their restaurants, and you get them walking up to you and practically begging you to come ...

...visited the beautiful island of Thassos for our summer holiday. We had everything on our doorstep and couldn't have asked for more! We've been to a few of the Greek islands and also to Spain and the Canaries, but nowhere matches up to the beauty of this wonderful island.
The locals were friendly and spoke VERY good English. The food was delightful and inexpensive, our accomodation was clean, tidy, spacious and above all comfortable. The sky was ... ...what a great tan!
With Thassos town minutes away, the great Ipsario Mountain to the rear of the apartments, a fantastic beach 3 minutes walk away and a promanade of tavernas as far as the eye can see there is a great choice of activities. I'd recommend the boat trip around the island, with sunbathing and swimming in the open sea (from the boat), to fishing (for the men to prove they are still hunters at heart). There is then a BBQ on the water and ...

...wife and I went to Thassos for the first time,in June, and although an enjoyable and pleasant time, it was lacking 'something'. Yes it is the usual hot, friendly and Greek island, it did not have the usual trappings that make the essential Greek island-no donkeys, no old men playing backgammon-it could have been Walt Disney's idea of a Greek island.Yes the food is nice, yes it is cheap enough, and indeed the roads are excellent(the best I have seen ...
