Advantages: Well priced, innovative decor Disadvantages: Relatively basic - no restaurant
...a travel magazine that advertised the hotel as “The UK’s first design hotel for budget travellers”. The Big Sleep, in Cardiff City centre is a former British Gas office building that has been converted into hotel rooms, with an emphasis on retrospective styling. As you first enter the hotel stairwell, you are greeted by an enormous framed photograph of the actor John Malkovich – I later discovered that The Big Sleep is actually ... ...a fairly busy road in the centre of Cardiff, which is shared with a number of other large hotels including the Marriott and Jury’s. From Cardiff Central train station, the hotel is a short walk, or an even shorter taxi ride. For travellers arriving by car, Cardiff is easily reached from the M4, with the city well sign-posted from all motorway junctions. Cardiff City centre is relatively compact, so most attractions are close to the hotel, including ...

Advantages: Cheap, Central and very clean Disadvantages: No restaurant.
...my taste for hotels (especially the ones we cant afford) booked us in to the penthouse as a treat.
There are 5 penthouse suites on the Top Floor. The view is lovely. It would be nicer if it was a view of Cardiff Bay instead of the trains though that I could see! but never mind!
The Penthouse cost a very reasonable £99 ( this was total price not per person)This included continental breakfast. This was my only disappointment- I am a bacon and eggs ... ...people can eat. You get the choice of Cereal, yoghurt or the Croissants. There is a bar there, located on the ground floor but we didnt try it so I cannot give an idea of price. why would you want to stay in the hotel bar when there are so many places to drink in Cardiff anyway!!
The room itself was stunning. You can see it for yourself on www.thebigsleep.co.uk. The Bed was huge and around it there was a massive fluffy rug. In the bathroom was a ...

Advantages: Location and price Disadvantages: Bog standard rooms
My partner and I booked The Big Sleep hotel to stay in after watching at concert at the Cardiff International Arena back in December. The hotel is in a great location, comfortable walking distance to all Cardiff's attractions including the arena, train station, shops and bars. The car park is fairly small though so you may struggle to get a space at peak times.
The reception is very modern with abstract furniture and first impressions of the hotel ... ...was a bit dissappointed, while the rest of the hotel looks sleek and stylish, the room looked like something out of an Ikea catalogue. It was very clean and simple but lacks the design touches which you will find throughout the communal areas of the hotel.
Our booking included breakfast, which is continental so don't get your hopes up for bacon and egg in the morning.
Don't get me wrong, for the price the hotel offered everything we needed for ...

I booked the Big Sleep for myCardiff stay as I was after something reasonably priced but comfortable. It was a short walk from the station and was about 10 mins from the main high street with several pubs and bars closer by. The room was a good size with a comfortable bed and TV, lamps and adequate furniture. It was rather brihgtly coloured but still tasteful and not too gareish! The room was however, ridicuously hot. The windows did not open as ... ...the width of the room -great for views but terrible when it came to keeping the heat out!
The breakfast was ok - a continental style with yoghurts, toast, juice, cereal and bioled eggs. Pretty much what you;d expect from this hotel, but the plates and cutlery were all plastic which did not make things easy to eat with or taste particularly nice!
All in all a good hotel, the standard which you'd expect for the price you pay. ...

Advantages: central Disadvantages: lazy impolite staff, uncomfortable beds, very noisy, bad breakfast, next to no parking
...to low budget hotels. However the photos of the owner john malkovic looking pained and angst ridden which you see in the foyer are the best way to explain what your stay in this very noisey soulless hotel will be like, with staff who are totally uninterested and with only 20 or so parking spaces for its hundreds of rooms. The small single beds are uncomfortable and when i politely rang down to reception to ask what time the road works outside would ... ...the workmen stay in the hotel and would have mentioned if they were working late... as though this was my imagination! we were told a hot breakfast was on offer only to find that this involved (still warm) hard boiled eggs... i would have been happier in a travellodge. ...
