    It’s rather mean of me to say so but I wasn’t expecting Carlisle to be much of a gourmet’s delight. I know it’s unfair – Carlisle is the economic, business and cultural centre for a large area - but, coming from the other end of Hadrian’s Wall, it is customary to mock our Cumbrian cousins. I had done a bit of research before we set out and had earmarked a contemporary Indian restaurant which looked great but when we got there we discovered the Outpost which we might have missed had it not been for the delicious aromas emanating from the slightly ajar doorway.
