Musical Ghoulies!

Advantages: Great story, music and effects
Disadvantages: Prices!

...mind you, but quite possibly the last visit to the theatre for quite some time. Actually I have no evidence to back that up and that’s probably the most ridiculous claim I’ve ever heard since Comfort launched their ‘fast-dry’ liquid, claiming it to be a revolution for the washing machine. Personally, I find clothes dry quicker either on an outside line, a radiator or even a tumble drier, and therefore I fail to accept the premise of a fast dry laundry ...
...more theatre trips planned for the foreseeable future. The ever present prospect of becoming parents has given us far more to look forward too. Needless to say, however, that with ‘Mary Poppins’ and ‘The Producers’ on the way to the West End, my obsession with theatre will rear it’s head in the not too distant future. ***THE THEATRE*** The first theatre to be built on the site of ‘Her Majesty’s’ opened in 1705 and was named ‘The Queen’s’ with permission ...

SING! My Angel of Music

Advantages: A brilliant show, The music
Disadvantages: Leg Room

...front row tickets to see The Phantom Of The Opera. So we all jumped into the car, laughing and mock-singing the shows most famous songs and waving at unexpecting lorry drivers on the M1. Even the fact that it was the hottest day since 1911 could'nt stop our squeals of excitment. When we arrived at our Kings Cross hotel, we all quickly got into our glad-rags and once again gave the hotel a tune-less rendition of 'The music of the night' - I don't ...
...Getting to the Hotel was easy, we flagged down a taxi and it cost little over six pounds, although if you are not put off by the smelly underground, then I am sure that would be an even cheaper option. The nearest stops are Piccadilly Circus or Leicester Square. I would avoid driving to the Theatre as parking is expensive. Her Majesty's Theatre is in the busy Haymarket area of London, and if you arrive early like we did, there are a few nice bars ...

Masquerade

Advantages: One of Andrew Lloyd-Webber's best
Disadvantages: Not cheap

'The Phantom Of The Opera’ is a musical which everyone should find time to see. With a compelling plot, phenomenal musical score and powerful, engaging setting the whole performance is extremely enjoyable and entertaining from start to finish. The story is told in flashback style, opening on the sale of various pieces of a Parisian Opera House in 1911. The scene culminates in a dramatic moment, which turns the clock back to 1881 and tells the ...
...He holds the owners to ransom and exerts a mysterious influence over Christine Daae, their junior soprano. The opera company first try to defy then capture the phantom as he murders cast members and interferes with productions. It is an eerie and occasionally frightening story, but not without it’s lighter moments of entertainment. The banter between the two opera managers and the established cast members Carlotta and Ubaldo is usually laced ...

A Phan-tastic performance

Advantages: Its an amazing show
Disadvantages: Seats are expensive

After the awful meal on New Years Eve, we tried to get some theatre tickets, most of the booths in Leicester Square were sold out, with the exception of some less well known performances. We made our way to Her Majestys Theatre in Haymarket. Being New Years eve, and the Phantom of the Opera being a popular show, we were not surprised to find that the tickets were sold out. *** Returns *** Some people may not be aware, but you can actually queue ...
...exchangeable. When the deadline is reached, for us it was 7pm, those tickets left are sold to people in the returns queue. This is not a method for getting cheap tickets, the tickets are actually sold at full price. You must also pay cash, but its usually a sure way of getting great seats to the show of your choice at last minute. There were 5 of us in total, and we managed to get excellent seats, and still all sitting together. As only the most ...

Phantom...Still Crazy After All These Years

Advantages: A night of theatrical magic - immerse yourself.
Disadvantages: None I can think of - the experience is worth the face value of the top priced seats.

The review is based on a performance in August, although the cast is still the same. As a surprise, I treated Best Friend to an evening performance. He had never seen the show, although we have both caterwauled and massacred Think of Me countless times whilst inebriated. Phantom is of course an old warhorse that keeps going and going...a permanent fixture in the West End. But for sheer scale, overblown melodrama, soaring aria-lites, volume of fabric, ...
...been said about Ramin Karimloo, the current disfigured resident of the Opera House. And you can see why. Said to only be on stage for less than 30 minutes, the Phantom's presence needs to be all meanacing and all pervading. The show stands or falls with the man. And WOW, he was absolutely blooming phantastic (*groan*). Best Friend was sobbing throughout Music of the Night. And when he (Phantom, not Best Friend) made that last plaintive cry of "Chriiiiistiiine...", ...

Still a Masquerade

Advantages: Seeing a piece of Musical Theatre History
Disadvantages: The show seems a little tired.

...Papier Mache music box in the shape of a monkey in persian robes playing the organ..." Phantom of the Opera is one of the 3 remainig megalith musicals. The dinosaur shows that have been running and running and running. Most have died out since the asteroid of pop musical hit the town, but Phantom, Blood Brothers and Les Miserable rumble inexorably onwards. This gothic extravangaza still has the power to captivate an audience, and whether or not ...
...it is still surprisingly good. The staging is still capable of raising gasps and many of the sets are breathtakingly beautiful. However, it is beginning to show its age. A number of the musical sequences are pre-recorded, and they are starting to sound like an old 78. The direction seems tired, and a number of the characters are almost parodies of themselves - a distinct waft of ham came from various parts of the stage. The Phantom himself was excellent, ...

My favourite opera show

Advantages: good story, excellent soundtrack
Disadvantages: none

...saying how great "Phantom of the Opera" is, but i just can't really imagine it as i have never watch it. Until one fine day, the crew came to Liverpool and i managed to get some very good seats as i booked my tickets very early, about 1-2 months before the show. I managed to get seats just about 5-6 rows from the stage. The story started at the auction house. At the beginning, everything was just normal with bidder and auctioneer shouting on the ...
...a sudden flash of light, the chandelier was hauled up and everything changes in just a split second, and all of us experienced a time travelled back in time. Everthing happened so fast and so smoothly, this introduction caught me a shock but i really enjoyed it. The music is fantastic. As i was sitting rather near to the stage, i can see clearly the face expression as well as hear every word they sing. This is really the best opera i have watched ...

I could watch this again and again and again

Advantages: Well performed, incredible soundtrack - go on, you can sing along, everyone else does!
Disadvantages: None

...this opera/musical. I think the soundtrack opened a lot of people's minds to opera, when it first came out. I love it! Can sing along to it and do housework, write or whatever - and that's just the music. Michael Crawford IS BRILLIANT - but then he always has been, to my mind. The costumes, set designs, were perfect. As were the rest of the cast. It was such an experience. Andrew Lloyd Webber did it again, the man has a talent for these productions. ...
...By now, everyone knows the story of the Phantom of the Opera, so I won't go in to details, other reviewers have done that more than justice. I just wanted to add my cheer to the roar of the crowd, those of us who are die-hard "Phantom" fans and don't want to let anyone miss the opportunity of joining us! If you have the chance - GO! ...

If a blind man gained sight, this would be 1st on his list!!

Advantages: The most amazing sight I have ever seen!
Disadvantages: Im at home now and not still there!!!

...went to see Phantom of the opera, and it was so good that i am still gobsmacked now. After seeing the film starring gerard butler, i couldnt imagine how it would be portrayed on a stage. We managed to get 2nd row tickets, right in the middle! It was truly an amazing show. I cant review it to its full potential without giving away the surprises that it holds. You will have to go and experience it for yourselves!! But one thing I will say is that ...
...head when it rose to the ceiling. The actors and actresses are truly superb, and also the costumes, set designs and special effects are outstanding!! There was a boat and candles rising out of mist- just like the film!!! I especially loved the way how the audience was slightly involved. Such as it gives us the feeling of being behind the stage curtains. The live music was absolutly fantastic, and I would definatley go again! The ticket price ...

Restores my faith in Musicals

Advantages: Great music and atmosphere
Disadvantages: A Bit pricey

...they are all too 'over the top' and either lack any good songs, or rely on the completely without any real Storyline. However, going to the Phantom changed all of that. I had heard some of the Songs before, but was amazed at how current and tasteful it is, 15 years after its Premiere. The Storyline, from the classic Novel is wonderfully portrayed, in detail, but not too much detail, and the wonderful scenery and stage effects (I won't spoil it ...
...they are magnificent. The singers at the moment are better than Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman on the CD, and the Soaring melodies and intense chords and rhythms make your heartbeat quicken and eyes glaze over. The only Disadvantage is price - 50 pounds for a pair of returned restricted view seats. P.S. Her Majestys Theatre is on the Haymarket (Nr. Picadilly Circus) ...

powerful story and music

Advantages: thrilling story and music
Disadvantages:

...definitely a very interesting story. The musical is so well known that I just felt so moved when I saw the show for the first time. I had a CD of Webber's musicals and had listened to all the pieces from time to time. The begining of the musical was interesting and interesting. I love the scene of the performing of opera in the Paris Opera House. It's quite entertaining and funny. The costumes were fantastic and the way they moved the boat on the ...

Phantom magic

Advantages: One of the best, still haunting
Disadvantages: Looks a little dated

I first saw phantom of the opera when I was about ten, so I decided while the tickets were cheap for londoners to go and see it again. It was just how I remembered. The show was written based on the original book 'Le fantome de l'opera' by Gaston Leroux. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and lyrics by Charles Hart. A quick run down of the plot then, a dancer named Christine (Celia Graham) is chosen by the Phantom (John Owen-Jones) to sing at his ...
...of the theatre and the owners. A few accidents occur and lots of smoke and love songs later all is restored to order. There is also the triangle of christine, the phantom and christines lover Raoul (Matthew Cammelle). A great show that keeps you entertained the whole way through, everyone knows the music too. The costumes and set looks a little dated but it still works very well. The cast had fantastic voices and it was a great performance from ...
