Today was our Christmas lunch - pre-booked at the Royal George in the village of Appledore where most of us live. It's a stones throw from Westward Ho and is situated at the mouths of the Taw and Torridge estuaries. Advantages: The sea view was excellent, Disadvantages: The owner's inflexible and offensive management style.
A memorably disappointing evening. The owner's attitude changed from oily to frosty as soon as it was politely pointed out that the limited range of dishes on offer bore little relation to what had been cheerfully promised when the booking was made, One of our party has special dietary requirements which we had been assured would be easily catered for. As it turned out the only suitable dish, prominently advertised on the specials board, was not ... ...poor substitute for what had been expected. No compensation of any kind was offered and the owner's parting words amounted to 'get lost'. This restaurant is in an attractive position overlooking the sea and really ought to offer a standard of service, including ordinary politeness, equal to that setting. ...
