...this year they stayed at The Royal York with a meal at the nearby (if you call 40 minuets on a coach) Castle Howard. All very posh and normally way above my means of expense (for the general person attending this function think doctor, surgeon, well paid researcher), however as hubby does work for them they paid for most of the trip (we had to pay £26 in total, what a great deal!). The Royal York Hotel is superb. Located next to York train station it is easy to find, however you travelled just follow the signs for the station.! I have stayed at The Royal York twice in the past year and both times the service has been exactly what you would wish for, the reception staff are extremely friendly, efficient and knowledgable on the area. ...plenty big enough for two! The views from the rooms are spectacular, teh rooms at the rear of the hotel over look the wonderful gardens and to the front the city walls and beyond. The only draw back with the front rooms is a little road noise but this is a very minimal price to pay for the views. The hotel has its own health club (Spa, Sauna, Steam room and pool, also a limited gym area). The health club is always clean and the facilities serviceable. ...
