Advantages: Endless on a summers day with the trout jumping up the weir yards from your seat and the peacocks yelping. Disadvantages: Not as good in winter, but still great. Busy, busy busy
...priviledged and nervous at writing the first review for such a beautiful pub. The Trout has people talking about it's suberb food and situation on the other side of the world. It is known for it's idyllic situation on the fringes of Wolvercote and Port Meadow, but still just inside north Oxford.
Having a large outdoor area backing on to the Isis, with St Edward's School boat club (used by many colleges) nextdoor, and the weir very close ... ...reading. One looks out onto the river, and on the opposite bank is the old ruined monastry (apparently haunted). The ruins have a well kept garden in the centre. I'm not entirely sure about it's history and would be greatful if anyone could shed some light on this?
The highlights are the river and the weir. On summer days trout can be seen jumping up the weir and people line the banks hoping to see a single scullers capsize. Due to the Trout being ...

...colleagues and I went to The Trout for a celebratory meal. We were really looking forward to what we supposed would be an enjoyable outing. However, once through the doors our hopes were soon dashed by surly waiters and very poor service. The pub was not busy, yet it took over two hours for our two courses to be served. Items were forgotten and the general attitude of the staff was quite blasé. However, that was nothing compared to the fact that ... ...huge - almost all of the packaging of some pre-made sauce. Which apart from disgusting also leads one to question how well made and fresh the dishes are. To top it all off, at no point did the staff seem truly concerned by the fact that two of the dishes had food packaging in them. One even joked, upon finding the first piece of packaging, ‘Let’s hope there isn’t any in the other dishes!’. The whole experience rather marred our celebrations and I ...

Advantages: Beautiful setting Disadvantages: Dire food and service
I previously visited The Trout years ago, possibly up to 7 years ago. No problems to speak of back then other than the queue for food and drink!
My experience last week (a Wednesday evening-weekeday) means I will NEVER visit The Trout again. Very disappointing.
1. The queue is still ridiculous- 20-30 minutes wait. The car park was nearly full yet just 2 staff serving customers for food and drink. It is very boring to make your partner/friends wait ... ...with mozarella/rocket) was totally bland, the rocket leaves completely limp. My friend had ordered Prawn Cocktail, this was also bland and clearly from a tin/jar.
3. Main meals. It seemed half the menu wasn't available to order so I chose Fillet Steak, my friend had Tuna Nicoise. My steak was OK- the pepper sauce lumpy and salty- a sign it had been reheated at least once. My friend's salad was overun by overcooked green beans and the sauce was not ...

Quick review of The Trout, Oxford
We waited an hour for our table. We waited another hour for the food. The food arrived cold. The chicken tasted like re-heated food from the previous day and the sauce was a solid clump on top. The lasagne was good but lukewarm with a tiny amount of sauce. The chips could be found at McDonalds. Prices have also increased. Sad to see the changes. Sad to loose the old warmth and funky quality of the old Trout. We have been going to the Trout every Sunday of September/October/November for years. But now we will go elsewhere. It is sad to see the demise of such a well known and dearly loved landmark. ...
