The Thistle Euston was found on our behalf, at a rather steep £120 B&B it was this or nothing. Now I've stayed in a few Thistle hotels, and their quality does seem to vary somewhat, so it was with some trepidation that I set off on the 200 mile journey.

This hotel, as its name suggests, is literally a couple of hundred yards from Euston Station, and about 10 minutes walk from Euston ... ...the front of the London Thistle therefore is very welcoming, more reminiscent of an opulent 4 star outlet rather than its proclaimed 2 stars, the concierge are on hand to assist with luggage and parking.. There is ample on-street metered parking, free until 830am, and there is a small compact car-park in the basement of the hotel. Advantages: Errr.... Near Euston? Disadvantages: Near Euston, expensive, small rooms, tatty facilities, dodgy location
...rates on the room. The Thistle was described as a 4 star hotel just behind Tottenham Court Road at a rate of only £69 - cheap for London. We booked there and then, and were a tad disappointed to say the least when we discovered we were staying at the Thistle. We have used the Secret Hotels before and stayed in some pretty nice places, however felt that maybe we were mislead on this occasion. A quick glance at other online reviews showed that not ... ...(as opposed to the 4 advertised) but also not too many people enjoyed their stay there.

Saying the hotel was behind Tottenham Court Road is a bit of a misnomer - it is in fact right next to Euston Station, with Tottenham Court Road a good 10 minute walk down Euston Road. The location is a bit poor, although convenient for business travellers I guess. The only place to grab lunch ...

...heard such great reviews about Thistle hotels that rather than shop around I decided to play it safe with that. BIG MISTAKE!
There was nothing madly wrong with the hotel, it was clean enough and the service was very friendly .......... it was just that the decor was very very tired, the carpets were showing signs of threadbare, the breakfast was nice in a B & B sort of nice, the beds just were not very comfy and we had to lug our cases up about ... ...if I am to be extra picky the shampoo didn't half make my scalp itch (thank goodness I used it AFTER the show - though it didnt make for very polite 1st class train travel behaviour home).
I think the biggest disappointment was that it did not live up to my expectations. Maybe it just needed a good shake n vac and well placed pot pourri, I dunno. It didn't spoil a great weekend and quality time with my ma and lad, but if I could rebook the whole ...
