...of a budget trip to Tioman rather than a luxury all inclusive resort.
When and Why was I there?
*****************************
About 9 years ago I was in Kuala Lumpur for a trade show just before Easter. I'd learned to dive about 6 months earlier and, having gone all the way to Malaysia, I wanted to get my fins wet again. The Easter break meant I could get about 5 days on the island without using much of my leave.
I did my research on good dive ... ...have heard of it?

Tioman lies off the North East coast of the Malaysian peninsula and is famous (if you could really say famous) for being the Bali Hai Island in the musical South Pacific - did anyone spot the reference in my title?? It's promoted as a paradise island and there are a number of good expensive resorts which means that you can fly there. The centre of the island is mountainous jungle ...

We had an awesome time in viewing coral reefs on the boat. Feeding fishes in the clear blue sea. It's a great place for diving activities. The swimming pool in the ...

Advantages: Monkeys walking past your hut Disadvantages: Bit too hot!
The island is beautiful and calm with amazing wildlife such as monitor lizards and monkeys. It can be reached by ferry from Singapore Mersing or Tanjung Gemuk. I went from Singapore and it took about 4 an a half hours. There is also an airport on the island which you can fly to from Kuala Lumpur or Kuantan. A friend and I went with no accomodation planned. There are two resorts one with a golf course, however we chose to get away from these busier ... ...port of Salang. We found accomodation easily in the form of our own cheap, fully furnished, air conditioned hut. We didn't get the opportunity to meet many other travellers or many local people so it isn't a good destination if you're looking for a vibrant social holiday. We ate in the local restaurant most of the time, which had a broad menu and accomodating cook.
I wasn't aware of many insects although another hut we looked in was fully kitted ...
