A Fascinating Mixture of Medieval Cultures

Advantages: A location rich with statiscal, geographical and historical enironment
Disadvantages: Can be quiet boring and no nightlife

...narrow, winding streets of old Toledo transport the visitor back to the Middle Ages. The city gates, castles and bridges all maintain their medieval flavour and bear silent witness to the days when Toledo was one of the most important cities of Europe. Toledo, however, is not a typical European city. Even the railway station has an oriental air. A closer look at Toledo’s monuments and crafts reveals a city that has absorbed the skills of several ...
...capitals. Roman historian Livy described Toledo as “a small city, but fortified by location”. When the Visigoths conquered Spain after the fall of the Roman Empire, they chose Toledo to be their capital. It was here in the sixth century that King Reccared rejected Arianism, a step that paved the way for Spain to become a centre of orthodox Catholicism and Toledo the seat of its foremost archbishop. The religious panorama changed when Toledo became ...

Toledo, history preserved, hill top heritage

Advantages: Historic, beautiful scenery, feel good place
Disadvantages: None

A visit to Toledo is memorable for so many different reasons. Other visitors' reactions are most likely similar to mine - so much history, beautiful to walk through while experiencing how preservation of religion has affected architecture in this magnificent Spanish National Monument. One day recently I joined thousands of other tourists to stroll through the narrow, steep, cobbled streets to glimpse just a little taste of how Toldeo has evolved ...
...is worthy of going to Toledo just to see this wonderful painting. At other historic sites there are many of El Grecos works which he painted before his death, in Toledo in 1614. Next visit was actually where we learned about the religious history which has evolved in Toledo including Jewish, Muslin and Christian cultures. We walked into Synagogue of St Mary the White: Syngaogue of Iglesia de Santa Maria La Blanca. It is no longer used but is preserved ...

Toledo, the nearest thing to time-travel

Advantages: Important cultural and historical centre
Disadvantages: Can be busy in the tourist season

Toledo is ideally located for a day-trip for anyone taking a short city-break in Madrid. After a day or two in the busy-ness of Madrid city centre it is refreshing to go to somewhere so very different, a walled ancient city set in typical Spanish landscape. But take your camera and more film than you’d expect to have to take for as you round every corner there’ll be something that just demand a photograph! Toledo, is set on a large rocky ...
...believe the bus journey to Toledo is easy, but personally I recommend the train which can be taken from any of the Madrid railway stations and then only makes one stop between Madrid and Toledo. The service is hourly and costs only about £5.50 return (incredible to those only used to British railway fares). The station in Toledo is about ten minutes walk from the old city and the route is obvious as many other tourists will be heading in the same ...

armour and Lladro heaven!

Advantages: beautiful, armour and Lladro heaven!
Disadvantages: on a steep hill.................

A beautiful citadel perched on top of a hill (a 'breathtaking' walk!) with fantastic views. Renowned throughout Europe for quality of locally produced armour - from helmets, to swords, to full body armour and shields, it is all around you - shop after shop after shop.......fascinating! Beautiful churches and religious ceremonies carried out in all their grandeur. Tiny cobbled streets and different attractions at every turn from tiny cafe's to lovely ...
...with leafy fringes, art galleries dedicated to el greco (who we did't actually think much of when we went in to have a look!). Ended up falling in love with a piece of Lladro or two (BA were subsequently not impressed with our bulky lugguage but were very helpful...) of which there were shops at every turn. Transport from madrid was not that painful - can either get there by bus or train - about a hour costing under £10 per person. Cafe's can be ...

Disappointing

Advantages: Day-trip from Madrid
Disadvantages: Boring, too touristy

Toledo was a let-down. It had been built up in guidebooks to be a wonderful, beautiful place, but in reality it was quite unattractive, boring and overly-touristic. It wasn't like visiting a town, it was like visiting a museum, with so many other day-tripping tourists wandering around. When I went, in April, the weather didn't help - it was cold and rainy. Miserable. The best part was the bus trip from and to Madrid (which was very cheap and only ...
