...in the world – the Tower of London. For nearly a thousand years, this great fortress, palace and prison played a central role in England’s turbulent history. Through its gates passed kings, queen, courtiers, churchmen, politicians and judges-some to emerge in triumph, others never to be seen alive again. Why was the Tower built and what human dramas inside its walls shaped the course of English history.

Advantages: A piece of living history. Disadvantages: Not a lot.
...It is said that the Tower dates from the time of William The Conqueror, and it celebrated its official 900th birthday back in 1978.
But the reality is that there were already fortifications on this site for more than a thousand years before this, going right back to Roman times and beyond.
The Tower is at the very heart of London’s history, with all the buildings from Norman times on very well preserved.
When you look at it at night, when ...

You can join the Yeoman (or Beefeaters) in their guided (and free) tours. They wear the traditional uniforms and will explain all the “secrets” as you move around the towers. The meeting point is marked with a big panel with the timetables (every ½ hour and last for about 60 minutes) near the entrance. They are very funny and there is a couple ...

...we work quite near the Tower of London and both hadn't been here since we were kids we decided to make it our first port of call.
The Tower of London is situated right on the River Thames in the borough district of Tower Hamlets with the closest tube station being Tower Hill on the Circle and District Line. It was built by William the Conqueror in 1078 originally intended as a Royal Palace. It was then used as a prison with a great number of very ...

Advantages: Very interesting , lots to see Disadvantages: Gets very busy
The Tower is one of London most popular and busiest attractions. It has been since I was a child and can remember my first visit 40 years ago. It almost seems one of those rights of passage that many years later I have returned with my own children.
The Tower has changed little in its fabric and structure but the attractions within have become more numerous and the quality and style of the exhibitions is hugely improved on what I recall from my childhood.
An ...

...London we have to use Tower Hill tube station, and my girl's aged 5+9 are always begging me to take them to the castle, but I'd always put it off as I have another child in a wheelchair and it's not accessable for him.
However, the local train company was doing a special offer where a child could get in free with a paying adult, and I took the plunge and off we (me and the girls) went took look round what they called the fairytale castle.

Advantages: Interesting Disadvantages: Expensive and long queues
The Tower of London is a fascinating, educational place to go. It has played an important part in British history, from a group of rebels besieging it during the Peasants revolt to the arrest of Sir Walter Raleigh. It's a traditional British tourist resort with family activities and events.
I really enjoyed it, it told every story of every event in the history of Britain. Plus when I went they had a Punch and Judy show on which really entertained ...

In summer the Tower of London can be on of the most crowded spots in London,so get there early to avoid the queues inside and to save waiting in line outside. You can buy your tickets in advance from any underground station.
The Tower is chiefly famous for two reasons ~ it has a long history and it is the repository of the British Crown Jewels. In fact only seven famous heads have been parted from their bodies in the castle confines.

The Tower of London is a darn good attraction, full of history and puzzlement. Of all of the attractions that I have ever visited, the Tower has undoubtably intrigued me the most. Its air of wonderment leaves on wanting to know far more than the Guides will ever tell you.
I enjoyed my trip so much -as did the kids- that we are keen to return. There was lots for all the family to do and the trip was fully interactive. Due to the sheer number of ...

The Tower is expensive so take your time to see everything inside and out and, don't forget to see the ravens and discover their importance to the Tower and the country. Before you leave a short walk will take you along the river so that you can, at least, take home a photgraph of Tower Bridge. Do take some food with you because there is not much on offer close by. NOT ALL IS SUITABLE FOR THE DISABLED. ...

...history is covered in the Tower of London, and is definitely worth a visit. The Tower orignally started by William the Conqueror, although he didn't live to see it finished, has been added to by various Kings over the years and bits taken away. Recommended is the trip to see the Crown Jewels (get there early!!) and the Medieval Palace to see lots of information about Edward I. Advantages: Impressive! Interesting tour too Disadvantages: Very busy at weekends. A tad expensive at just under £10
The Tower of London, situated on the Thames is a large and impressive fortress that has a great deal of history behind it. I would recommend it to anyone. The crown jewels are here, and they're very impressive! I went there on a weekend. It was very busy. I took the guided tour option (included in the price) and was guided by a yeomen warden in traditional dress. The tour was very interesting. The guide made it humorous and gruesome at times.
