HISTORY OF THE UGC AREA
The UGC cinema in Edinburgh is somewhere I frequently go. A couple of years ago in the Gorgie/Viewforth area there was nothing really, not a part of town I ever visited apart from when passing to go into the city centre Then, I hear about Fountainpark being built. This is basically an entertainment complex with much to do, the businesses have changed a little e.g. McDonald's is no longer there but ...

Advantages: Plenty cinemas, lots of room Disadvantages: Can be busy at nights and weekends
When I lived at home in West Edinburgh, I had to travel a good 10/15 minutes on the bus to get to the nearest cinema. Then one day, years after I had moved out, a new complex was unveiled which was going to contain a UCG cinema. The complex in is Fountainbridge and was named Fountain Park. It is close to Gorgie and Brunstfield and not far from the centre of Edinburgh.
I'd never heard of UCG, but seeing as they had easy underground parking we decided ...

Advantages: Seemingly freebie movies Disadvantages: Getting far too popular
...that is UGC.
By now the UGC membership system has swept through the nation. The Edinburgh UGC at the Fountainbridge complex is no exception. For a fee of £9.99 month payable by direct debit, with a minimum join up period of 12 months, you get to see as many movies as you can get into. Its a very clever scheme because once you start paying, it seems like going to the movies is free, and anyway cancelling a direct debit is so awkward. (If you don't ...

Advantages: vast selection of new films, comfy seats Disadvantages: price
...early and avoid the rush. UGC has a shop offering a selection of magazines, film merchandise, movies and Cds which help to pass time by if you are there early. There is also food and driks on sale, and also a licensed bar- but they are majorly over priced- bring your own food!
For special occasions there is a 'premier suite' but at £12 a ticket I'm not sure this is worth the money. Also for the children there is a service offering parties. UGC ...

Advantages: Free parking and watch all movies if you like Disadvantages: Minimum subscription of 12 months
I think only those who watched a lot of movies would choose to buy the movie pass for the whole year. Well, if you like to watch movies alone and at the same theatre most of the time, the pass might suit you.
The movie pass costs 10quid a month (by direct debit) and you have to subscribe to it for a minimum of 12 months. Hence, the 120quid bill you pay. That equates to at least two movies you have to watch per month (3 if you are a student) to ...

Advantages: Nice. Clean. A large screen and many smaller ones. Disadvantages: Slow queues.
The UGC was built as one of the new Virgin Cinema Megaplexes; however, in a rare move by the Virgin group the whole Virgin Cinema deal turned out to be a wise bit of venture capital. The cinemas which they had bought where done up and sold off. The Fountain Park location in Edinburgh was a bit of an anomaly in that respect - it was stilling being built as a Virgin Cinema long after Virgin Cinemas had been sold off. I am no lawyer but I imagine Virgin ...

Advantages: Multi-screen complex Disadvantages: Mess up with my DD's, plus the usual over-priced snacks
Last year, when my local UGC cinema launched the £9.99/mth movie pass, I jumped at the chance. I signed the agreement, was set up with my temporary card and things were all go!
This was a fantastic new scheme, hassle free and cheap. Or at least until I wanted to change my bank details. Due to problems with my account at the Bank Of Scotland, I closed the account. Naturally UGC sent me a new form to fill out.
I did this immediately with my new ...

Advantages: range of films, cafe, pricing deals, Iwerks, parking Disadvantages: overpriced food, multiplex atomosphere
This is the newest cinema in Edinburgh, part of the Fountain Park complex in fountainbridge, about 10 mins from the city centre. It has 12 screens, so another souless multiplex I hear you say, well yes, and no. Yes in the sense that is owned by a big company, it was Virgin, now taken over by UGC, all the screens are very similar with good seating and fx, it has all the latest blockbusters, the food is way over priced, and all the staff wear identical ...
