Vienna All Style and Grace

Advantages: Style and Grace
Disadvantages: None really

Vienna - the capital of Austria and the home of the Habsberg empire - was not my first choice as a holiday destination. In fact we got there a little by mistake. We wanted to go to Venice but my dyslexia got the better of the travel agent and we wound up there. We were so glad. It truly is a magnificent city. Vienna was the headquarters of Europes longest lasting Empire. The Habsbergs ruled over the Hungarian Austrian empire for 600 years and finally ...
...strikes you is the architecture. Vienna is the home of Baroque and Rococco styles of building and was largely spared (or restored after)by countless wars over the centuries and walking through the city fills you with a deep sense of awe at the buildings, statues and squares that dominate this city. The centre is dominated by St Stephens cathedral and in the Kaisirplatz -the opera house. Even the modern quarters are filled with fine and elegant terraces, ...

The A to Z guide for Vienna

Advantages: Great city for a weekend break or even more
Disadvantages: can be quite hot in summer

...in 1683 after they besieged Vienna and he defeated the French Army of Louis XIV at Blenheim in 1704 (together with the Duke of Marlborough). Between the two palaces, you will find very pretty terraced gardens which offer a wonderful view of Vienna. Both palaces now host great museums (e.g. the Austrian Gallery for 19th and 20th century art - Klimt, Schiele, Kokoschka). C Cathedral The gothic cathedral of St Stephen’s is located in the very centre ...

Every visitor to Vienna should of course see the cathedral, and you might want to climb the tower or to walk down into the catacombs where the hearts of the emporors are buried, as well as the bones of many thousand Austrians who died from the plague some hundred years ago. D Donauturm The Donauturm (Danube Tower) is located close to the Danube river, and it was built for an international gardening exhibition in 1964. You can take the lift ...

Wonderful Vienna

Advantages: Great Culture, architecture, lots of things to do
Disadvantages: Capital city prices, european weather

I went to Vienna in October 2001 and spent a week there with some friends who showed me some local bars and made me promise not to tell anyone about them so they arent spoiled. I can honestly say that it is one of the nicest cities I have ever been to. Combining the efficiency with warmth and hospitality, every street radiates an atmosphere of culture and good living. So here are the things they let me disclose to the outside world. If you are a ...
...that I particularly enjoyed in Vienna include St. Stephens Cathedral (Stephansdom), Hofburg Palace, the winter residences of the Hapsburgs, and the Kunsthistorische art museum. There is also a newly opened ( at that time ) music museum Haus der Musik that is fabulous if your tastes are so inclined - everything from rooms dedicated to Brahms, Mozart and of course Beethoven and a few others to interactive exhibits with lots of hardware - you can conduct ...

The Perfect Weekend Break

Advantages: A very nice place with friendly people
Disadvantages: You have to come home again

I visited Vienna in March 2001 and have to say this was one of my most favourite places I have visited on a short City break. We flew with Buzz from Stansted that took about 1 hour 40 minutes flying time. The Airport is connected well to the City Centre with a twice-hourly service that takes about 20 minutes. We stayed in The Renaissance Penta hotel that I will recommend and Ive written a separate opinion on this lovely hotel. Vienna, which is ...
...throughout the city. I find Vienna like an updated similar version of Prague, except that Vienna is a lot more expensive. Vienna is a city that I did feel threaten to be in. The people are friendly, the streets are clean and to be honest I had a totally stress free holiday St Stephens Cathedral This is in the centre of town and can be seen from nearly even where in Vienna due to its huge size. The nearest U-Bahn station is at Stephanplatz. This ...

Subterranian fun in Austria

Advantages: Interesting, educational and fun
Disadvantages: 9 degrees and damp

...in Hinterbrühl, just south of Vienna is a fascinating historical site open to the public for tours and souvenirs. The Seegrotte is actually an old Gypsum mine where white and red Gypsum was mined from the late 1800’s. In 1912 a blasting operation let loose millions of gallons of water which flooded the lower caverns of the mine, creating the largest underground lake in Europe. In the 1930’s a team of cave explorers found the lake and eventually ...

The second day of our holiday saw us driving out of the city and down to the Bergwerk Seegrotte, we had seen a pamphlet about it ...

The top place for Culture and Classical Music

Advantages: Class, culture and music
Disadvantages: Could be quite expensive

...cultured countries in Europe and Vienna being its capital is also the capital for classical music. Threfore, there is no surprise that many well-known composers or musicians and some examples are Mozart, Johann Strauss, Hadyn and Schubert. Vienna is all about classical music and beauty with a amazing collection of buildings and architecture. The city lies in the Danube Valley and has been inhibited for thousands of years. Charlemagne arrived in 803 ...

Through carefully planned political marriages, the family became the longest ruling dynastry in Europe. It is also the city where the famous French Queen, Marie Antoinette, a Habsburg was born. A quick dinner at the hotel and a night tour of the city on coach finished the evening. ...

Vienna: Charm and Grace

Advantages: Big city offerings with a small city atmosphere.
Disadvantages:

...For me Vienna means Art Deco (Jugenstil), carriage rides, pride, impenetrable magesty, the weight of time. It also means nude bathing on the Danube island, good bread, the saturday flee market, the year-round open market, bicycle riding, walking, easy living in a cosmopolitan, but not huge city. Vienna is music, opera, tradition. "Her Magesty" retains the old and cultivates the new within the framework of the old. The guilded palace rooms of the ...
...life. The viennese are proper; indirect in their manner and speach, as well as emotionally restrained and insecure. And it means old people: old men with scars earned in Russia, old women dressed up in their old, but fine, garments and a mantle of pride, inching their ways with canes to the cafes for apple strudel, coffee and a taste of life. Pride and dicipline override the pain of osteoperois-afflicted backs. Conflict is Vienna, rich in complication ...

Amazing place lovely people

Advantages: Historic Scenic Clean Friendly Reasonably priced English spoken and understood widely
Disadvantages: German signs a bit tricky for those with only english language

Vienna is everything the the brochures boast of and more! A short 3 night break in the Austrian capital gave us enough of a taster to want to return for more. When travelling on a budget, Austria is not the first place you think of to visit. Its reputation as an exclusive opulent venue is perhaps offputting for the visitor with limited funds. However by booking flights and accommodation on line we cut down significantly on the costs of getting there. ...

This gem of a hotel is clean and comfortable with a friendly staff and generous kitchen. The concierge even helped to organise a special meal for us when I asked for his recommendation. Incidentally his recommendation was to visit the Hass Haus in St Stephans square just opposite Stephansdom in the centre ...

Never gets Boring

Advantages: good nightlife, many shopping opportunities, big city with an atmosphere like a small town, safe even at night, excellent public transportation system
Disadvantages: none

...last eight years I’ve visited Vienna about twice each year, because my sister lives there, and I always find something new to do, it just never gets boring. The first thing you’ll probably want to do when you are in Vienna is have a look at all the famous sights like Stephan’s Cathedral, Schloss Schoenbrunn or the opera. It’s really worth it. I was always impressed by the beautiful old architecture, the fourth time I visited them as much as the ...
...Other places to go in Vienna include the Prater (not only the so-called Wurschtel-Prater – the part that contains the Ferris wheel – but also the large and peaceful public park next to it), Tichy (which might possibly be the world’s best ice-cream parlour), the Tiergarten (zoo) and one of the many Heurigens at the edge of the city (be careful what you order, however, you might get everything from the best meal of your life to a wobbly undefined piece ...

Stunning holiday destination

Advantages: Stunning architecture, very cultural and romantic
Disadvantages: Little pricey, but no more so than many large European cities

I visited Vienna with my girlfriend in August of this year (2005). Wow. As a city Vienna is one of the most visually stunning you will see, with amazing architecture throughout the city, especially in the central area, with many buidings echoing classical Greek architecture, impressive isn't the word! The main central area is comprised of definite 'blocks' which is very handy - the shopping area all sits together (something for everyone, lots of ...

Schloss Schonbrunn

Advantages: Culturally enriching. visually stimulating, worth the price paid.
Disadvantages: A tad expensive,

...as it's really beautiful. Vienna has a very efficient and modern underground system, so there shouldn't be a problem in getting there at all. Entrance to the castle, on the other hand, is much more expensive, depending on what you want. Schonbrunn Palace is the castle where Sissy stayed with her husband, the king, oh never mind, I forgot his name. I think it was Joseph Strauss, nope, that's the composer, I think it was Franz Josef. I think. Anyway, ...

It also shows life in a Palace nd how regimental it was, despite the colour of the rooms. One can also see and know more about life for the royal folk. After that, one can go into the gardens behind Schonbrunn Palace and have a nice walk around the area. Definitely worth going as ...

The Tomb of Kings

Advantages: Culturally enriching and for history's sake
Disadvantages: Bad air, and the skulls in the sarcophaguses grinning at you when you see them

In Vienna, the Tomb of Kings houses the bodies of almost all the rulers and figures of importance in Austrian history, most notably, Maria Theresa, and Sissy. But there are more than just these two famous figures in there. All sorts of coffins, well, more the cases containing the coffins are in there. There are all made of steel, I think, and are all ornately designed. With beautiful, if not somewhat macabre sculpture surrounding the entire casing. ...
...entire mausoleum. It shouldn't be missed. Also, the air, I have to add, is not really too good in there. I went in for about an hour and had a slight headache when I left the place. Bad air. Sissy's sarcophagus should not be missed as well. She was the most famous person known in Austrian history so far, as in Germany, and in Austria, they sell her postcards, and musicals were made of her, as well as plays. Most show her with her famous diamond stars ...

Stephensdome

Advantages: nice place, relatively cheap, great historical value, and for all horror fans
Disadvantages: A little macabre in the catacombs. I thought I'd see skeletons walking about...

...I've visited in my travels, Vienna is the most expensive place I've been to, short of London, that is. The Stephensdome is a nice place to go to in the center of Vienna. And under this cathedral, there are the bones of many convicts, and the people killed by the plague in the middle ages. One can go for a guided tour led by the guides in the cathedral. Pretty gruesome stuff, since the catacombs are lit by dim lighting and some bones were purposely ...
...was like then. Apparently, the smell from the rotting bodies were so bad in that time that no one entered the cathedral for any services that were held. Thus the convicts had to enter in to clean up the place. And it also has the tomb of Mozart the composer here. I don't think that he's buried here, but they do have it. It can be seen as one exits the catacombs. There are also the hearts and innards of the rulers of Austria's hapsburg dynasty here. ...

Great Gateway City UPDATE070201

Advantages: Good public transport, good gateway city
Disadvantages: not a lot of cheap accommodation

...op--- Having lived in Vienna and worked there too, I am absolutely smitten with the place. People claim that it is expensive, but in comparison with London it is cheaper, although accommodation on a shoestring can be difficult to find. Vienna is not as cosmopolitan as many people think, as the UN City, built on the Donauinsel is quite well removed from the centre and there is no cosmopolitan feel to it. For female travellers it is one of the nicest ...

My favourite city!

Advantages: great feelings, great churches, clean city
Disadvantages: A little high prices

Trip on Vienna I left approximately two years back, but still I much think for this wonderful trip on it beautiful city. Vienna was my place of stopping at the trip on Italy, therefore especially much time to me there to conduct was not succeeded, but me what this city gave me was fully enough. Vienna is a city what includes unites a fashionable city with a historical city. One includes unites such modern technologies as a subway, high-quality built ...

St. Stephan's church When I went out from a subway and left in direction of old city. First, what I noticed certainly there was St. Stephan's church. Nothing so imposing I was yet such, that saw.An effect was strengthened by that was late and a church was shined. Church towers stretched highly in skies and ...
