    In my lifetime I have only been abroad three times now, Tenerife which I don’t remember, Lanzarote and now New York. On the trip to Lanzarote, I swear that our plane was the worst plane in the world, it felt dirty, small and the televisions were in the centre of the isle, and were constantly blocked due to the air hostess’ walking in front of it. When we booked our trip to New York however, the girl at Thomas Cook booked us on a trip on Virgin Atlantic Airways, and proceeded to tell us all of the little extras we would be getting on this plane.     Who hasn't heard of the almost mythical experience in luxury that flying Virgin Atlantic represents? The Virgin Clubhouse lounges, the on-board massseuse and manicurist, the bar right there in the cabin, the fully reclining beds...the list is endless. But what about economy class? Was there any trickle-down effect, or was the difference enough to effect a Marxian-style revolution (sorry way too much philosophy/history this semester!)     Having never used Virgin Atlantic, prior to Christmas we booked a holiday for four people to Las Vegas via Expedia.com. As there wasn’t a choice of carrier, we were stuck with Virgin and much to my dismay, in the weeks approaching the actual holiday I heard horror story after horror story of the level of service to expect.     Advantages Advantages The entertainment, service and the fact that you get to say to friends 'I've flown with Virgin'

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Worth the hype? Decor, standard economy legroom. You're also giving Beardy Branson more cash

    It’s bloody incredible that despite Heathrow being as disastrously large as it is, I found it nigh on impossible to get a decent cup of coffee; for me, the most important part of any waiting experience, wherever one may be. OK, so there are umpteen Starbucks, Prets and one-off coffee shops in Terminal 3 however they are constantly heaving and when you have shoelessly shuffled through a generous security process and are stuck with an over-excited mother who has never flown long-haul before, time tends to fly (pardon the pun) and before I know it I am prematurely fleeing the queue of caffeine ... more

    I have used Virgin Atlantic on occasions for my flights with work and on my own holidays. My two most recent flights were one of each - one to Orlando international and one to Antigua's VC bird International. I would say the flights I have flown on have all been very similar in the way that they were conducted and the staff on board but I will give my opinion of the airline as a whole and let you decide for yourselves.     It has been almost ten years since I last travelled with Virgin long before the days that I knew of Ciao existence, probably before I even knew about the existence of "tinternet" and on this trip I had little choice over the airline as the whole holiday was booked with Virgin Holidays. Given that it was a nine hour flight I was quite happy to be going with an airline that has a good safety record, is known to be customer service focused and being a scheduled airline would mean an extra inch or so of leg room.     Virgin Do It Better For one month of the year, I and she who will be obeyed escape to Florida, Orlando to be precise. Our mode of aerial transportation is provided by Virgin Atlantic. Thank you Sir Richard Branson for creating an airline that treats its passengers like people and not like cattle (BA take note). Our last trip to Orlando was in March this year, (2005). The holiday started with a 300 mile journey by car to stay with relatives near to Gatwick Airport the day before our departure.     London to New York, as well as being one of the busiest routes in the World, must also be one of the most lucrative for the airlines. Competition between US and UK carriers is intense, and there are an overwhelming amount of European, Middle Eastern and Asian carriers using LHR as a stopover or offering connections via their Hub airports. I have flown this route many times since 1988 in Economy class, and have seen the standards increase on all airlines, but Virgin Atlantic stands out as leading the way.     This was our first flight with Virgin back on the 03 August from Bridgetown in Barbados back to Gatwick. I had wanted to travel with Virgin before, but have always had problems with getting seats at the cheaper fares, as I am always inflexible with dates of travel. Now that I have flown with them I can see why this airline is so popular and why I have problems booking with them!.
