VIRGIN VOYAGER
My latest journey to Birmingham New Street on the Virgin Voyager cost £62 return. I departed on the 7:29 “cross country” train from Preston in Lancashire. Preston and Birmingham are on many of the “cross country” train routes which make up one of the national franchises which were awarded following rail privatisation.
The Voyager train was intended to upgrade “cross country” travel when introduced earlier in the noughties. Although ...

Advantages: Looks good, clean, bright - and new! Disadvantages: Some missed opportunities
...you who have travelled via Virgin Trains lately might have had the fortune to sample one of their new Voyager trains. The new Voyagers have been in service for about nine months now, and as time goes on the depleted and ailing Virgin rolling stock is being replaced with these sparkling new trains. The Voyagers are currently only operating on certain routes in the UK, but of late, I have noticed more and more of them starting to appear. If you have ...

Virgin trains. Well, what can I say? What a change?
I had so many problems with Virgin that I stopped calling committee meetings for our union in Birmingham. It was getting so bad that trains didn't turn up/were cancelled/turned up late or were full when they arrived because the previous train had been cancelled. The last straw came when we were turfed off at Derby because there had been an incident near Sheffield, so we had to travel by coach ...

...rail travel... but the new Virgin Voyager is something I really do enjoy.
I have to commute Oxford - Birmingham quite often, and the trains along this route are being replaced at a rate of 1 per week with the new Virgin Voyager Trains. This replacement plan is due to finish in a few months' time, with increased trains and much improved reliability. Each train is costing virgin £4million, but it is worth every penny.
The improvement is noticable ...

...premier cross country service the Virgin Voyager on a relatively short distance trip from York to a secret location in the east-midlands.
Despite a relatively short distance by road (about 69 miles) the train journey took almost three hours and it was necessary to change trains three or four times (each way). I had the opportunity therefore to compare about three different train companies and the differences in service were more than remarkable.
I ...

On hearing of my dilemma, a rather efficient yet pleasant Virgin chappy, took my tickets from me(immediately following which, the nasty door at this end of the coach tried to chop my arm off,i retaliated by poking viciously at it's 'open' button). Virgin man then sped off towards my reserved seat, to confront the 'lady' and her male partner, ...

...been in new rolling stock. Virgin CrossCountry's fleet of trains is being replaced, as it's old Class 47 and Mark 2 carriages are replaced with the new Voyager and Super Voyagers. Hurrah you may say...
Firstly these trains are 4 or 5 carriages long, and are diesel multiple units so no engines at one end or either end. Previous Virgin CrossCountry services had more carriages so this is basically a downsizing. You do however see them operating in ...

Advantages: Cheap advance tickets, onboard entertainment Disadvantages: Unreliable, smell weird
...time I step onto a Virgin Voyager it's the same: the doors open, and the smell hits me. I have travelled on them fairly extensively, and they all have the same smell - a musty, chemical, slightly toilet infused smell, which sometimes even makes me gag. It's as if the smell from the toilets has got into the air-conditioning and spread through the entire train. I discussed this with a man from Inverness on my way up from Bristol to Leeds recently; he ...

Advantages: Onboard Entertainment, More Room,Nicely Designed interiors Disadvantages: Cost
I usually Virgin trains when i am travelling down the west Coast mainline. My experience of the Virgin brand has always been good and i also have Virgin Broadband too for my internet connection.
Anyway onto the trains themselves. They are very nice inside and the great thing about them is that they have little screens near the overhead storage area which give you useful information about whether a seat has been reserved or not. There are also plugs ...

Quick review of Virgin Voyager Review ofVirgin Voyagerby
ericthetraveler
Nice train when empty. However travelled from york to Birmingham las friday 5th. all seats were showing as available, however the display was 'b***ered' according to the guard when we all complained about having to give up our seats to resevation holders at Sheffield. Every one in the carriage that was sitting then stood. Guard apologised for over crowding on the service, apologised for no buffet food, appologised for the aircon not working. 'Its over crowded because its a friday he said'. Then why only put 4 coaches on a train destined to go all the way to plymouth. Also. the toilet was flooded and unusable unless you didn't mind the bottom of your trousers getting soaked. Seats were comfortable but some seats have no view. Very long journey in unconfortable conditions. Always book a seat and check the virgin website for the coach layout to avoid the limited view seats

This Review is based on the Virgin service in Cornwall.
Service
We have 2-3 trains a day. Not really good enough. They come between 8-10 in the morning towards Birmingham and about 4-9 in the evenig to Penzance. So they do come from Scotland but the frequent delays of 1+ hours arent accetable. I got on a Voyager a couple weeks ago to Penzance it had come from the very far away place of Plymouth. And it ...
