    Advantages Advantages Central hostel

Disadvantages Disadvantages Don't get much sleep

The Wake Up Hostel had been recommended to me by my friends at Gap Year.com. I booked my bed well in advance as I was spending my 2 weeks in Sydney over Christmas and New Year. I have to say I was very pleased with the price over this festive period as a lot of other hostels and accommodation decided to bump up prices and take advantage of the stranded unorganised backpackers. PRICES: 10 bed dorm $28 a night, 8 bed dorm $30 a night, 6 bed dorm $34 a night and 4 bed dorm $36 a night. ROOMS: I have to say my first impressions where not great, I walked into the room and gasped! Not an inch of ... more

Advantages Advantages Clean, modern, welcoming, good security and facilities, central location

Disadvantages Disadvantages Doesn't have freephone number, electronic card access for everything, checking in takes ages, no free breakfast

As I found after a previous bad experience, and talking to several other travellers while in Australia, good hostels are hard to come by in Sydney. The first hostel I stayed in I found to be cold, inhospitable and overpriced for what they (didn't) provide. On talking to other people, I found that though there were cheaper hostels available, they may be bed bug ridden, decrepit, uncomfortable, overcrowded, unfriendly, or too inconveniently located. So I was pleased to discover Wake up! Sydney on my next return to the city... it's a bright, buzzy and ultra modern hostel, which only opened in ... more

Advantages Advantages Clean, trendy, secure, close to train station

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive

Wake Up! in Sydney is considered one of the better and posher hostels to stay in out of the hundreds there are. It is certainly one of the most expensive but you do get a nicer experience. I stayed there during Christmas and NY, the most expensive season and paid $39 a night in a 10 bed dorm. I think the normal price was $29. From the website the current prices are: Twin - $98 per room Double - $98 per room Double ensuite - $108 per room 4 bed dorm - $38 per person 6 bed dorm - $36 per person 8 bed dorm - $32 per person 10 bed dorm - $30 per person Locations wise it is loacted in the city in a ... more

    Advantages Advantages Atmosphere/Fun/Design

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Price/Noise/Too busy

I stayed in the Wake Up! hostel is Sydney for a week in October 2009. I was traveling alone (18 year old female) and booked into a 10 bed dorm room which cost me $26 per night. This rate is a little more pricey compared to other hostels in Sydney.. THE ROOM: This hostel is exactly that, a hostel. Do not stay here unless you are prepared to put up with young travelers and their ways. My room has 10 beds and there was always someone in the room, very hard to get time to yourself. The room was very big and had a lovely view onto a tree lined Sydney street. The bunks are very basic and not the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Near transport

Disadvantages Disadvantages Awful atmosphere and expensive

I went backpacking for a year from October 2008 til October 2009. I was arriving in Sydney, Australia on the 20th December 2008 and was going to spend a couple of weeks there over Christmas and New Year. I went onto the Gapyear website to see what other travellers were recommending as good hostels to stay at, and Wake-Up came out top. I read the reviews and even though they were a mixed bag, I though I would go with the majority. Wake-Up had a fantastic website and the photos looked great. There seemed to be great amenities and their own bar downstairs – great way to meet people. I booked it ... more

Advantages Advantages A perfect place to start your time in Australia!!!!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

I left for Australia when I was 20. I went alone and for the entire flight I was so excited but when I actually arrived I spent my first night in tears, I actually almost got on the next flight home. The next day I sorted myself out and said I have to give it at least a week. That night I went down to the Side Bar, had y 3 dollar meal and a beer. I looked around and saw that everyone was in the same boat. After another beer I plucked up the courage to talk to some people. By the end of the night we were dancing on tables! I ended up staying at Wake Up for 3 months and had the best time. The ... more
