...A1 / A303. Welcome Break are visited by me more than any others, so I'll write this opnion on them though it could be any one of the big chains! They also have the Days Inn lodges and offer meeting rooms at the sites with lodges. These I assume (having never stayed in one) will be full of business men and travelliong sales men..)

...off JUNCTION 2, is the WELCOME BREAK services of HOPWOOD PARK.
I have visited these services over a dozen times in the last two years. This has been whilst going on holiday, or mainly, whilst doing the taxi run, transporting my daughter between CARDIFF university, and home in NOTTINGHAMSHIRE.
This site has been visited therefore at all times of the year.
The site itself is fairly new, having opened up in 1999. It is not one of the largest sites ... ...way in, or out, take your pick, is a petrol station with the usual selection.
The car park can get full at busy times of the year.
There are spaces for 500 cars, 10 caravans, 36 hgv, and 14 coach spaces. Disabled people are well catered for with 15 spaces just outside the main entrance, and there are also spaces for parent and child.
Being a caravan owner, i find the caravan spaces tend to fill up quickly, especially during the summer.

I always stop at this service station between junction 28 and 29 on the M1-not because I particularly like service stations, because I don't, but because it's the one service station I know that you can get a decent cup of coffee- Costa Coffee has a franchise on this site. I have driven past more than one other service station on a journey up or down the M1 to stop at this one, located near Nottingham. These services are relatively new so they are ... ...building and the facilities. Compared to some service stations, they are palatial. The grounds are pleasant, and well lit at night so you can stop without fear of walking in an unlit carpark. Important especially if you are a woman. I like to feel safe. I have stopped here at 3 in the morning on the way down to London, and parked my car, got out and used the facilities without feeling threatened. ...part of our road systems. Welcome break have many motorway service stations situated all over the UK, and they are all very similar. Fuel stations which are reasonably priced, seeing as though they are on a motorway! Many have a burger king,or Mcdonalds or a similar type of food outlet, the prices at these are the same as if you were buying food in the high street. The newsagents at the areas are of good standard, and supply many magazines, books, ... ...They have small ammusement arcades to fill time whilst resting from driving.
The coffee bars and cafes are of a good standard but they are rather expensive.
Welcome breaks and indeed other motorway service areas should regularly be used for short rest periods for each and every driver. ...

...all the brands i think Welcome Break is by far the best for cleanliness, choice and service.
Now it costs anything from £15 to £25 to park a HGV on services over night (which i get back anyway)for this you get parking plus a voucher for use in the eateries for between £6-£10.
Now after a 15 hour day driving on our lovely roads i look forward to parking up and getting away from the wagon for a while, Most welcome breaks have just been refurbished ... ...Now the reason i like Welcome Break the most is they have KFC ( i love KFC) so its a good start for me, then there's the other facilities Now as i have to sleep in the truck all week i have to use services to get a shower and Welcome Break have the best showers going, nice clean well looked after(most anyway) hot showers with plenty of room, most of the shower rooms now are seperate from the toilets which as you can imagine is a good thing, who wants ...

...which seemed to be a Welcome Break ( I can see where they got the name from!), and although I only ate once on the way there and again on the way back, with some chocolate and a couple of cans of pop, I spent nearly £25 just on myself, and I didnt buy that much. Although, I must say, the food was good, but if I had wanted to dine out, I would have booked a table at my local restaurant!
TIP- take some sandwiches and drinks, maybe a flask,if you are ... ...services, try and stick with the fast food outlets, these are more reasonable, although the prices are still hiked a bit.
The other thing that really annoyed me, is that there was a two hour waiting limit in the car park, after that, you have to pay and it is not cheap. Considering the publicised dangers of driving tired, one would expect some form of free parking for those that really need a sleep. Is this why so many people fall asleep at the ...

Being in a wheel chair, I took a break at Charnock Richard on my way to Blackpool.
There is a steep ramp to get from the parking bay to the entrance.
The Disabled toilet was hard to get in, the door was very stiff and had to be pulled towards you. There was very little space for my wheel chair and the provision of grips were minimal.
It was impossible to see the assistant at the drinks counter, and I only got served because a person behind me ... ...my hot drink trying to get to the milk, sugar, spoons and then fighting my way past chairs and narrow passage way to get to a table.
On complaining to the restaurant Manageress I was told that it was busy period and I should have some one with me to help me. Ah well I will not be calling there again, and urge all ti by pass this Rest Area. ...

There can be a down side to the Fleet Services... Like any service station it is TOO EXSPENSIVE, especially when the quality of service is not to good.
There are always long queues and is sometimes not worth the bother. I rate Welcome Break as the best of the 3 main providers.
thier high st food brands (KFC / BK / McD ) all offer their food at the same as high street shops so this is no rip off. its the same you would of paid for by going to a high street - bearing in mind you would have to pay tp park in a high street and the 1st 2 hours are free at a service area then this is actually better value than going to a town.
I have to reccomened the ... ...telephone, modem lines, trouser press 24 hours reception and secure car parks, all the above you would normally only see in a city centre typr hotel, bearing in mind the average price is 45 pounds a night compareing to twive that if you where ina city then again its actually good value.
Im aware that some of the food range and drinks are a bit pricey however what many people are unaware of is that the government takes 50% of the profit from motorway ...

Welcome break?!? All they welcome is your money, and definitely not you! You’ve been driving possibly all day, or longer, and all you want is a tea or coffee to help you on the way. But here you will have to pay a lot of money to refresh yourself. It’s against the law to continue driving if you are tired, so motorway service stations like welcome break have many people stopping to have a rest and refresh themselves for legal reasons as well as for ... ...much for the services they provide. There is normally quite a large variety of food and drink available there, Burger king, self-service restaurants, shops etc, but the prices are much higher than the high street and a lot more then necessary. They know that it’s the only place to buy refreshments, so they take advantage of that and charge so much. The quality isn’t bad, but not worth it! ...

Advantages: Handy, well loacated, clean VERY NICE :) Disadvantages: No hotel, or even a shop.
You arive, on a VERY busy part of the M6 (ecpecially now the M6 TOLL looks after Birmingham) you can expect this stretch of road to be busy. Keele was one of the first service staions around, and none of it's actual shape has been changed. This is bad noweer days since Keele is left with no lift, no hotel and no shop. Anyway you turn off, take a light bend and then and then have to break suddenly (with traffic behind you!) and you have to chose from ... ...do enter, the car park is never to busy, so you stop and head towards the main enterance. Just before the door is a cash machine, safely located in the open, near (but not too close) to the door.
As you enter, to your left is the gamezone, ahead are toilets. Now, dispite them being so old they are quite hi-tech, clean and smell nice. To your right is a cafe, situed beside the M6. Depending on the time you arrive you don't have to wait too long and ...
