Walking in a Whitby Wonderland

Advantages: Spectacular setting, great northern seaside tradition
Disadvantages: Tricky to get round in parts, far too easy to stuff your face!

...Dracula, the local gemstone is Whitby Jet ; dark, opulent and magical in every aspect. ==All dressed in black for a day at the seaside== And believe me, if like us you happen upon Gothic weekend, if you go down to the beach that day you're sure of a big surprise. There's really no better way to keep those unruly little ones in check than the sight of 100's of gothic afficionados roaming through the streets beautifully bedecked in splendidly dark ...
...slope straight onto those Golden Whitby sands. For me though, long before you get to any of that, there's an ideal opportunity to first soak up the side-streets that are bristling with cultural quirkiness and then if you are feeling sufficiently energetic, to take the chance to stroll up the multitude of cobbled steps that lead you to the Abbey. So when you come to the little red bridge, take a right turn, and head into the teashop strewn promised ...

Wish you were in Whitby, but bring a coat ... !

Advantages: Lovely place, nice atmosphere, not over-run by pests
Disadvantages: journey was difficult, was rather too commercial

Whitby is the quaint, fishing town situated on the North East coast of England. It's full of cobbled streets and sweet fisherman cottages, with streets barely wide enough for a car. Is it a typical seaside slightly tacky fishing town or have I found my perfect seaside destination ... ===JOURNEY TO THE EDGE OF THE COUNTRY === The journey to Whitby was not a long one from my location between Birmingham and Manchester, it was just under 4 hours as ...
...===SCENERY=== Parts of Whitby are wild and full of history; the whales bones in the side of the cliff, the sweet fisherman's cottages behind the ugly modern houses lining the edge of the cliff and river. The quaint cobbled streets and old worn steps, tucked out of site on the Whitby that is a lot harder to find. As most of Whitby, or most of the noticeable parts are covered in commercialisation. Cheap tacky stores, commercial brands, junk food shops ...

Whitby - a place to visit

Advantages: A good sea side historic town
Disadvantages: Not for city lover

Whitby is one of the coastal areas in North Yorkshire. WHATS SPECIAL It has more historical associations. The historical buildings give a good charm to the place. It has a fishing harbour which is a place to relax and boating in summer. Some of the very important places I visited in Whitby were Whitby abbey, old town and West cliff. It's very well known for freshly caught fish. So "Fish and chips "are very special over there. We can get its taste ...
...spend the whole day. WHITBY ABBEY The cliff top ruined Whitby abbey beyond Mary's church is one of the fascinating sight scenes. It is one of the most important evocations of England. On seeing the building we could guess the historical design and splendour. As we enter the monastery, we can see the fourteenth-century nave in the foreground and the earlier, thirteenth-century choir in the background. Whitby Abbey was founded in the seventh century ...

May your Duck bring you Luck.

Advantages: Beautiful town...very friendly and pretty. Good Shops and lots to visit, there and in the surrounding area.
Disadvantages: I had to come home! Things shut down at the end of October.

...~~~Where is Whitby? Whitby is located in the North East of England, not far from the North Yorkshire Moors. You will find this extremely pretty fishing village at the mouth of the River Esk. Whitby’s skyline is dominated by the Gothic Abbey on the Cliff top ~ we were there at the end of Gothic week and also saw the lovely firework display that made the Abbey look even more spectacular! When you see the Abbey silhouetted against the night sky you ...
...the Wolds Coast line. Whitby is a popular place to visit for the day when you are staying at Scarborough, Bridlington or Filey…we visited many times when I was little, but this was my first chance to actually stay here. ~~~Where did we stay? We stayed in a lovely basement flat not far from the Crescent and the West Cliff area of Whitby, on the West side of the river. We had to walk down to the harbour (and it was quite a steep climb on the way ...

The Man with the Camera....

Advantages: Heaps to see and do, spectacular views, good beaches
Disadvantages: The man with the camera...:O)

...could possibly desire. Whitby during August Bank Holiday weekend is a little different however. All of the above still applies, with the addition of a short blonde woman, a slightly taller brunette one and small nine-year-old boy doing their damndest to avoid the man with the camera! The man with the camera gets everywhere, ready to snap at you when you’re at your most windswept, pulling the daftest of faces or generally just looking like you’ve ...
...all over again! :O) Whitby is steeped in history and you’ll never be short of things to see or do. On our first full day we decided the best way to view the town was on top of one of the many open-topped tour buses, with the wind streaming through our hair and full commentary throughout from a tour guide. And of course, the man with the camera! ;O) The tour takes approximately an hour, but your ticket covers you for the entire day so you can ...

BOATS....SHEEP....AND CANDYFLOSS TOO..

Advantages: lovely If Weather Permitting
Disadvantages: Horrible in winter

Being a resident of Whitby Town, it’s not very often I get to experience it from the tourists point of view, however having Louise. (Or Squiggles as you know her on here), stopping for a few days it was the perfect opportunity to play at tourist myself!. Watch out for Dracula

Advantages: A pretty town with something for everyone
Disadvantages: Lots of steep climbs and steps

Whitby is famous as the place where Bram Stoker’s Dracula came ashore all those years ago and there are plenty of museums dedicated to the neck-biting vampire, but Whitby has so much more to offer. If you’re a fan of Heartbeat, as I am, you’ll probably recognise a lot of the places in Whitby as they quite often film part of the programme here. The town itself is a former whaling port built at the mouth of the river Esk and rises ...
...jewellery made from the famous Whitby jet. The Cook Museum recalls the life and times of Captain Cook, the explorer who lived here from 1746 to 1749. The Dracula Experience is also here on the harbourside. There is a walk along the side of the river with cafes and restaurants selling some of the fish that are landed there each day. There are a few slot machine arcades, but nothing too tacky. The end of this walkway opens out onto the jetty, which ...

Advantages: Historical, Quaint, Friendly
Disadvantages: Hilly for the disabled and older people

...part of the country. Whitby is dominated by the Abbey which is located on the cliff top, above the River Esk. To reach this picturesque part of town you must climb 199 steps. The Abbey is known as the parish Church of St. Mary. The author, Bram Stoker wrote the world renowned novel "Dracula", based on the churchyard. Another well-known person who originated from Whitby was Captain James Cook. His memorial statue can be seen on Whitby's West Cliff. ...
...and make a holiday in Whitby a must. Whitby is also a thriving fishing port and many an hour can be spent sitting and watching the trawlers go out to sea and return with their catches. During August, Whitby Folk Festival takes place. The streets are filled ...

A good time was had despite the changeable weather

Advantages: Cliff top walks, the Yorkshire people,
Disadvantages: All those fish and chips - you'll put weight on here! (namely I did - 4lbs!! - sorry WeightWatchers!))

I was fortunate to stay at Port Mulgrave, village of Hinderwell, just 9 miles away from Whitby, in one of a row of cottages with a sea and cliff top view - namely, "Seaway". The cottage was lovely, spacious and with all homely comforts, I couldn't fault it at all, apart from the very small parking space for your car outside, it was wonderful. The cottage can be booked by accessing the Country Holidays website or via their brochure. It comprises ...

Upstairs there is a double bedroom (converted attic with sea views) and a child's room big enough for a small tot. You couldn't have asked for more. We were situated 200 yards off ...

...several times a year! Whitby has a long history and the Abbey was founded by St. Hilda in the 7th century AD. You can still see the ruins of the medieval Abbey on the East Cliff, visible for miles around and extremely spooky on a miserable day! There's a fairly new visitor centre which has bumped prices up a bit, but the kids like the interactive videos where you can"question" key figures from the abbey's history. The only remaining kipper smokehouse, Fortune's, is on the same street and worh a shopping trip although the herring now come from Norway, I'm ...

...that was used along the whitby coast. These sightseeing trips generally last 30-45minutes and go outside the three piers that protect the town from the rough north seas and are well priced. There is also a bus tour of the town with a difference. The bus is from the 1960's and really highlights how Whitby is still a place stuck beautifully in the past. Dracula is another of whitby's famous connections. According to Bram Stoker's story Dracula landed ...

The smell of the air and the noise of the hungry seagulls, the warmth of the Autumn sunshine, and the faces of smiley happy looking people, walking talking and some just relaxing and watching the world go by. The alley way opens out into a yard that has a collection of unique cottages and a very pretty communal garden area, ...

Dog friendly Whitby cafe

Advantages: Cakes, cakes, all homemade, atmosphere
Disadvantages: Having to share with the dog

Whitby has now become an all season resort but sadly in the last few months it seems someone forgot to tell Whitby. Looking around and at the amount of retail trading that is disappearing it seems everything this delightful fishing port has to offer is sadly going amiss.
