Advantages: Lots of history, good history, nice location Disadvantages: Small food portions, Soft drinks quite pricey
...another Sunday Lunch. Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn, located in the Derbyshire Town of Castleton was one of several Pubs/Restaurants where we became regulars.
Castleton is a beautiful little Town in an area of the Peak District National Park known as the High Peak. It is an area that is famous for its Caves and these days I visit here fairly regularly on my trips into the Peak District. When I was here a few weeks ago and I wanted to find somewhere ... ...Cheshire Cheese became known as Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese shortly after this date.
Today, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese is both a popular Pub and a popular hostelry providing accommodation on a Bed & Breakfast basis. Since Castleton is only a 30 minute journey from where I live in Sheffield I have not actually had the need to find accommodation here but tariffs for a double room start at £55 per night.
There are ten Bedrooms all with en suite facilities, ...

Advantages: Friendly. Clean. Central to village of Castleton. Great for walkers. Disadvantages: Menu too extensive and too expensive.
We discovered the 'Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn' whilst searching the web for somewhere to stay in the Peak District. It was to be our first holiday away as a couple for 19 years! Finally leaving two teenagers behind (more than happy not to be dragged away on a walking holiday). The photograph on the website more than matched up to the real thing. Very friendly staff - efficient and obliging. There are 10 rooms of varying sizes. We had a 'standard ... ...ensuite shower room. Breakfast each morning was from 8.30 - 9.30. As keen walkers, we would have preferred breakfast a little earlier. However, breakfast was excellent - the 'full English' for hearty appetites or any combination of lighter meals if required. The staff were more than happy to accommodate you. It must be said though that the price for breakfast (included in stay) was not reduced depending on how little you chose to eat in the morning. ...

Advantages: Well placed in the village, actual pub very cosy Disadvantages: Rooms small, special offers a waste of time
After seeing a special offer on the internet for 3 nights for the price of 2, we thought we would take a break as it sounded a good deal. The advert gave the price of a double room at £50, or £60 for a room with four poster. When we rang the Cheshire Cheese to book we were told that a double room was now £65 for a small room with skylight, £70 for a large room or £80 for the four poster. We chose the £70 room. On arrival we found the room disappointingly ... ...leaving a substantial gap down one side. Downstairs the pub was very comfortable and beautifully decorated for Christmas, but the food was rather expensive for the amount received. On leaving we pointed out that the £70 per night charged for that particular room was excessive, and we were informed that the room given was a £50 room, but because of the 3 for 2 offer, it was being charged at £70. We feel the offer was very misleading, and will not ...

Advantages: Central to Castleton and olde enough. Disadvantages: Locked in the premises between 12 m/n and 7am. Hard beds.
On booking in Nov/Dec the price of a 2 night stay was £140. On arrival the price had gone up to £160 despite a deposit 6 months before hand. We were told we had been 'mistaken' and the price 'always went up on a B/H weekend'. When I said I thought it was wrong but would pay the extra anyway and would talk to trading standards, we were asked to leave on the basis that by mentioning trading standards, we had threatened the managers so he 'escorted' ... ...we asked to leave. We found a wonderful alternative, luckily.
The room was cramped with a view of a wall from a window that only opened about 6 inches and the beds knocked against the walls and were hard. Food prices were rather high.
Apparently, the downstairs is alarmed after midnight and guests can't get out without alerting the landlord til the cleaning staff arrive at 7 am so if you want to get out before hand or if you are a smoker and want ...
