Didn't We Have A Luvverly Time.......

Advantages: Beautiful city, much to see across a wide band of interests
Disadvantages: A day-trip only scratches the surface

...yesterday. I’ve been to York several times – after all it’s only two hours from Central London by train (and presumably from Edinburgh also, since it’s half-way between the two). Yesterday’s GNER DayPex Return cost us £24 each, not bad for 400 miles travel. Since you can’t really “do” a city like York anything close to justice on a day trip, I like to combine a nice lunch, one or two attractions that I’ve come to see and a general wander round in ...
...home! For the uninitiated, York is a walled city, bursting with ancient street names, and in many cases, ancient buildings too. For example, this is the city with the famous “Shambles”, the former slaughterhouse cum butcher’s quarter (hence the phrase “What a shambles”). This narrow street really does retain a few of those houses which get wider towards the top, allowing very intimate contact with one’s neighbours, making it very easy to share, ...

What a beautiful city

Advantages: Something for everyone
Disadvantages: I don't know of any!

I have visited York on numerous occasions both for an annual holiday and for a short break and I will never tire of the place. There is something there to interest everybody. To start with the shopping in York is excellent and very varied. The main part of the city has all the big chain stores including Marks and Spencers, Boots, Virgin, Woolworth’s, WH Smiths, Debenhams, etc., and is well laid out and mainly pedestrianised. All the major ...
...of places to eat in York from the well know such as Mc Donald’s and Pizza Hut through cafes and teashops to the more exclusive restaurants. There are reputedly 365 pubs within the city walls, most of which sell snacks and/or meals so you won’t need to look far for some refreshment and a welcome sit down during your shopping excursion. The Roman Bath Inn, near the city centre, is worth a visit, as it houses remains of a roman bathhouse ...

Yorkie bar anyone

Advantages: Lovely old town with alot to see and do with architecture that will take your breath away!
Disadvantages: Being a student town the pubs and clubs get mobbed at the weekend!

...to stay I'd recommend the York Youth Hotel (Tel 01904 625904). Functional ,not unfriendly place to stay although the beds aren't *that* comfortable! Saying that their dorm beds cost from just £9 per night as well as having private single and double rooms. I’d recommend York to anyone – young or old - who wanted to get away from it all for a while! Whether you enjoy strolling round and enjoying the air or collapsing into your bed at 4am ...

Jewel of Roman and Viking times

Advantages: lots to see and to do
Disadvantages: found it a bit expensive sometimes

...architecture and also history. And York is THE place to be if you want to see lovely things of all centuries! As everywhere in Britain, the Romans invaded the country and set foot on England in 43 AD . The 4 Roman Legions that came upto York built their fort between the two rivers that cross the City: the river Foss and the River Ouse. And in the middle, today is the cathedral. My bestloved cathedral....the largest cathedral in England dating from ...
...their longboats. How handy that York had two rivers, and so the Vikings landed and left loads of buildings that show us reminders of the Danelaw. You can see a lot of this time in the Viking Museum. I love the museums that take you through history by using stories, dolls, sights and sounds. It´s like the one in Canterbury: you walk past lanes and streets full of market places, cross town squares and pass by Viking housing. It´s sometime a bit smelly...I ...

A great place to visit

Advantages: Lots to see, easy to reach, has a great "feel" to it, over 1,000yrs of history.
Disadvantages: Difficult to cross the road in places - esp. at Lendal Bridge, Walmgate Bar, etc.| A Map is essential

York has always been one of my favourite places to visit, I think my first visit was must have been around 1984 when I was 5years old, as I remember for sure it was before the Minster caught fire due to a lightning strike. All I really remember from then was the hilight being a visit to the railway museum, followed by a visit to the Minster, and looking at the city walls, wishing I could go explore them. After that, visits were few & far between... ...
..."York Model Railway" (located at York Railway station).... not really knowing how long it would take. In the end it only took me about 20-30minutes (half the time I expected), so I had my first look around the Station since I was 5. It turned out to be a pretty good idea, as they just happened to be running 4472 "The Flying Scotsman" on passenger trips between York & Scarborough (Though I gave them a miss). After that, it was into the model railway ...

The York Dungeon we want Dick, we want Dick

Advantages: Gruesome fun, Interactive
Disadvantages: Can get a bit warm, Can get a bit busy

If you are visiting York make sure you set aside some time to visit the York Dungeon, especially if you have kids (not too young that is). The Dungeon, located conveniently in the centre of the city, is actually a museum of everything gruesome – from the plague to torture. Like I say the kids will love it! Upon entering the comfortably dingy and dark ‘dungeon’ you first learn about the plague and its affect on the people of York. ...
...in an old house in York a few years ago. On looking into this phenomena historians discovered a Roman road did in fact once go through the location of the house – spooky! Posted on all the walls are little titbits of information and little known facts – I loved the one that pointed out that a still standing law allows a person, born in York, to kill a Scotsman in York with a bow and arrow and get away with it! Next comes information on ...

Central Delight

Advantages: Wonderful, and central too!
Disadvantages: A bit expensive to go and live there :-(

York for long enough had the title "The City and County of York", indicating its place, until the "reforms" of Heath and Walker, at the centre of the three Ridings of Yorkshire. It's often thought of as a place for tourists to visit, but it has always been the place for Yorkshire folk to go to as well. It's a microcosm with everything you could want - architecture, history, museums, hotels, pub, shops even. So don't just go there to view the architecture ...

York - my new home

Advantages: Brilliant place, history, shopping
Disadvantages: Cost of living is high compared to Leeds

...and brought up in. York has a great mix of the old and the new. The Minster, the multangular tower, Coppergate, Stonegate, the Bedern, Barley Hall, King's Manor, Micklegate House - the old parts of the city cry out to you from the distant past. The shopping area and all the new coffee shops that are springing up make it a very good town to go shopping in as well though. The only thing that I didn't like about York during my student days was there ...

York:A Beautiful City

Advantages: Beautiful architecture. Full of history, Culture
Disadvantages: Now a hugely popular tourist place. Crowded

York is exactly half-way between London and Edinburgh and is very accessible from most parts of Britain by both road and rail. It's fascinating history, symbolised for most people by the lovely York Minister and the City Walls, began with the Romans. Over the centuries this beautiful city has always been a centre of religious and cultural activity and this can be seen in the Minister, the excellent Jorvik Museum, the Castle Museum and in the medieval ...
...attracts. The race course in York is very beautiful and is said to be one of Lester Piggor's favourite courses. The lodging scene in town is very good - there are number of high quality hotels and scores of homely, comfortable, bed and breakfast places. Options for dining out in York are extensive. Aside from old English tearooms, city centre pubs and fish and chip shops, there are plenty of sophisticated restaurants. Ethnic cuisines are well represented. ...

York Ghost Walk

Advantages: good entertainment and value for money
Disadvantages: not so good if the weather is poor.... you just grin and bear it - getting wetter and wetter

The York Ghost Walk was started by Trevor Rooney many years ago. There have been several "copies" set up in recent years but in my opinion are not quite up to the standard of the original. "Ghostly Tours" sets off from Kings Square every evening (8pm I believe) and is led by a first class guide usually in Victorian costume complete with top hat and cloak (rather like a Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde character). The walk lasts about an hour to an hour and a half. ...
...in cheek and, though "scary" in a humourous way (much in the same way as a roller coaster is "scary") the evening is suitable for all the family - indeed the last time I was on it a whole troop of cub scouts joined us... I cannot give you details of the actual evening as it would spoil the fun (and the occasional "surprise" ) but be prepared for a really good laugh and excellent value for money ...

Walk the Walls.

Advantages: Great views of the City.
Disadvantages: Difficult to find access points.

...are visiting the City of York then I would strongly recommend that you “walk the walls”. These walls are the Medieval walls built in the 13th and 14th centuries and still almost completely surround the city. It is only the sections that cross the rivers that no longer exist. The original city walls have been preserved so that visitors can now walk along these walls and overlook the sights and sounds of the town and get a feel for some ...
...certainly not the amount that York has. There is no charge to walk along the walls and there are a number of access points at different places around the City, although these are not always too obvious to find. Along the walls there are a number of places where seats have been provided so that you can take a short break, rest your legs, and admire the view or soak up the history of the area. This walk gives an unusual look into the City and I would ...

Quaint English Town

Advantages: Nice Old English town
Disadvantages: Not enough to keep a family interested more than a weekend

...steeped in history and tradition. York has seen many different rulers, from the Romans, to the Saxons and Vikings, and has somehow managed to stay intact through several world wars. The city is spectacular, with a huge cathedral, the largest in Europe. The city is surrounded by medievil walls that used to protect the city from marauding armies. The Museum Garden's are some of th most beautiful in the country with some wonderful buildings and ruins ...
...nineteenth century as much of York remains untouched. York is a nice change from the commercial 'Mall' type cities of England, providing a quiet day out for all the family. There is more than enough history to satisfy most, and the friendly warm welcome from the locals will make you feel right at home! This city is definately worth a weekend visit. ...

York -

Advantages: Good things to see, places to eat and drink
Disadvantages: ???????

...wouldn.t plan on going to York for any longer than a week because there isn't a great deal to do. There are some really nice guest houses and hotels. The marriott and The Royal York are very nice - not too cheap though. There are also some really nice guest houses near the football ground. Places to eat- 'Ask' Pizza near Macdonalds in the city centre is a fantastic Italian, the meals are really reasonably priced considering the place is so posh ...
...once. Activities to do in York - The Minster is worth a look and Cliffords Tower. The DUngeons are good. A ghost walk is also on in the town most nights. Taking a walk around the city walls is quite nice too. There is The McArthur GLen Designer outlet which most guidebooks advise going to, but unless you've got a lot of money to spend on designer clothes I wouild say it's too far out of the way to bother going. The maiun city centre shopping is ...

Quick review of York (England)

We went on Gothic Molly ghost walk this time and it was great, there were two storytellers and the stories came frome another part of York, they were very chilling indeed, and perhaps not as suitable for children but i think if your not feint hearted this is the one to go for, it took in a few pubs too, so we had a chance to warm up!. the other walkers were nice too and the whole thing ended in a party atmosphere where people were sharing their ghost stories with Adrian Spendlow, who has a show on the local radio in the morning so we caught another couple of stories there, we also met some very nice people who were on holiday too. ...
