Yorkshire lass' Guide to York

Advantages: Beautiful architecture, lots of culture, good pubs, loads to do, nice bars
Disadvantages: Very crowded in summer, can be v.rough at night, not great for clubbing

The beautiful medieval city of York lies right in the heart of the UK - smack bang in the middle between London and Edinburgh on the east-coast rail-line, making it an easy daytrip: so you've no excuse not to visit! I am lucky enough to live in this beautiful city and know the place well. I have tried to make this review as broad as possible, so people get an idea of what it's like no matter what they come for. I have done my best to write as detailed ...
...a very cosmopolitan, modern city, York retains it's links with it's past: the various people who have inhabited (and invaded!) York over the years have all left their mark on the City: from the Vikings and Romans to the Georgians, Victorians and Edwardians; examples of their culture and grand architecture can be found all over the city. The City itself is large enough to hold all the attractions of a big City, but small enough to remain charming ...

York is a city that is impossible to hate

Advantages: Friendly, quirky, excellent bars and restaurants and attractions that will suit everyone.
Disadvantages: Other people know this too and come in their hundreds

I was born near to York in a place called Harrogate and went to York for University, I now return as regularly as I can. York is one of the few large cities in England that has retained it's prettiness whilst still being extremely friendly towards visitors. It does not sprawl far outside the city walls and provides something new on every visit. Architecture ------------------------ - Naturally the oldest thing in York are the Roman and Medival ...
...best way to sightsee around York as it takes you past all the views. On a clear day, it is said you can see Leeds through binoculars. - In amongst other things, York has it's spectacular Minster wich is almost tucked away behind the main shopping areas and provide a pleasant respite to the shopping rush. The services are also regular at the Minster and it's adjoining churches - Scattered across the city too are various styles of architecture from ...

York- Short Break Musings

Advantages: Lots to do, good range of shops/eateries
Disadvantages: Flat

...wife and I went to York for a 3 night break in January of 2008. We drove down from sunny jockoland and despite my efforts found the hotel eventually. (Being on a road to Leeds against our will happened a few times!). We stayed at the Holiday Inn near the Race course, (reviewed separately). First Impressions It seemed to be a nice place. However it was wet, really wet. We're Scottish and we thought it was wet! That is unlikely to always be the case. ...
...top. The view of York is okay, you can see the Minster between buildings and erm, that's about it really, a few churches and you can look down on the river and expensive car park. There is a small room that remains but it is mainly thick walls and a space age shop building that alters the ambience somewhat. You could choose to climb up the steps to the entrance and see some of the view before climbing back down, keeping your cash for the next car ...

TRAVEL BACK IN TIME .......

Advantages: lots to do and see, very attractive
Disadvantages: none at all

The city of York is the most wonderful place to visit, and indeed I spent a day there only yesterday. It is one of the few Cities that hasn’t been tainted by the modern feel, and is in fact steeped in history, so much so that you only need look round to see it. York was once known as Yorvik which stems back to Viking times, medieval artefacts are dotted all around and preserved impeccably. The Castle Keep, Clifford’s Tower and the ...
...points in and even outside York on the skyline. Highly decorative with stone and woodcarvings, beautiful stained glass windows, ornate hand painted gold ceilings and paintings, it is almost breathtaking, you feel a strange sense of deep peace whilst perusing the building, its awesome. This is remarkable as in July 1984 lightening struck the south transept and caused a huge fire. The restoration was a daunting task as the roofing materials needed ...

How to relax on holiday

Advantages: Compact, lovely atmosphere, relaxing, so much to see and do
Disadvantages: None whatsoever

...a two night break in York – our first holiday without children for twenty years, and a fantastic break it was too. I love York, it’s a wonderful place for a short holiday, its such a compact and beautiful city oozing history with its three miles of walls encircling a maze of medieval streets and hidden alleyways – all with really fascinating stories. The four main entrances to the city centre are still dominated by the imposing ...
...while the incredible York Minster a magnificent gothic cathedral which towers over the city as it has done for over 800 years contains England's greatest concentration of medieval stained glass. Its grandeur and surpassing beauty attracts visitors from all over the world. There’s so much to see and do in York. For a start there’s four world class museums. York's Castle Museum is famous for some of the finest collections in the country: ...

Advantages: Beautiful, loads of pubs, lots of shops
Disadvantages: Too many tourists, can be pricey

...about the enchanted place. York - The City of Eternal Tourism: With a countless number of "ye olde worlde" attractions and a reputation that supercedes Mike Tyson, York pulls the crowds better than a Spielberg blockbuster. York obvioucly has a great deal of history to it, with it being Eboracum to the Romans, then Jorvik to the Vikings and now the modern day. Those with any grasp of history will know that that was a very brief look at 2000 years ...
...attractions detailing the history of York and tour buses travel the city regularly to show eager tourists the ancient town. There is also the magnificent Minster in the centre of York, York dungeons, the Railway Museum and regular ghost walks (one of which claims to include "Mad Alice" - sounds interesting). Of course, tourism does have its setbacks, as it isn't nice for "the locals" to have to wade through all hundred billion (rough estimate) tourists ...

A lovely multi-cultural city

Advantages: Beautiful city with a cosmpolitan outlook
Disadvantages: Tends to flood regularly

York really is a beautiful city and has so many reasons for a visit. It is a city steeped in history and tradition and was both a Roman and a Viking settlement, being previously named Eboracum and Jorvik. The architecture of the city is old and the city walls are in their original state at many places. There are still many of the original bars which were the entry points to the inner city. Probably the most attractive example is Micklegate Bar with ...
...Another example of ancient York is Clifford's Tower which resembles a castle keep and is atop a small hillock. Near this is the Castle Museum where displays exist of how houses and shops have looked over the past couple of centuries. There are old fire vehicles, police stations, pubs and prisons all recreated as they would have looked at the time. The collection belonged to a local philanthropist and has been kept on since his death. It is an absolutely ...

York... the city of ghosts

Advantages: Lots of things to see and do
Disadvantages: When you have to come home

York is a city in North Yorkshire. It has a Minster, and two rivers, The Ouse - the largest one, and The Foss - the smallest. The Foss flows into The Ouse not far from York city centre, and it's just a short walk from York's City Walls. The Walls York's Walls go around the city itself. With four main gates it seems to be one of York's main visitor attractions. Many people walk along the walls and go from gate to gate. At each gate is a hotel, for ...
...was lucky enough to visit York in the school summer holidays 2001 I stayed in the Monkbar Hotel. It's a 3 star hotel, but if I chose it would be 5 stars for definite because everything was really great. The food was really nice with loads of choices on the menu. My favourite meal time was dinner but breakfast was good as well. If you ever consider going to York, the Monkbar Hotel's the place to stay. Ghost Trails There are loads of really interesting ...

Advantages: There is lots to do and see.
Disadvantages: It is very tiring.

...how take a day in York and not fork out a fortune. Let us arrive by train saves parking and gives us somewhere to start. As you come out of the Station and look ahead of you. you will see the walls. A good way to start your tour would be to stretch your legs, after being cooped up on the train. Let’s walk the walls. Out of the Station turn Left and follow the road, which will go under the walls. Pass the Cholera burial ground. You can find ...
...Micklegate Bar. NB in York a gate is a street and a bar is a gate. There is a small Museum in the bar, you have to pay to go in so only go in if you want to pay out money. I suggest you keep walking round look out for all the sites you can see. As you carry on around the walls you will come to Victoria Bar. You will encounter the River Ouse. The Wall does not cross her. You will have to dismount and walk over the rivers both Ouse and Foss. Between ...

Has York Recovered From Us Yet?

Advantages: lots of pubs to visit
Disadvantages: visited too many

I have been to York many times and have visited many more attractions than I am going to list here, but there is only so much you can do in one weekend. After myself, my husband and our two friends settled into our lovely B & B close to the city centre we were in need of liquid refreshment so ambled along to: The King’s Arms Pub This fine drinking establishment has been an inn since the 1780s and is one of the oldest buildings in the area. It’s ...
...It dominates the city of York and is a truly beautiful spiritual place. It contains one of the finest collections of stained glass in existence, which fills the entire building with light. There are now charges to get in which in my opinion are extortionate, £4.50 for adults with extra fee if you want to visit the Undercroft, Treasury, Crypt and Tower, there are slight discounts for 60+ and students, while children go free. When we went there was ...

Disadvantages: They didn't name it twice - y'know, like the NEW York.....

York is a city in the North of England. It is a walled city, and is full to the brim with history. York - The home of the white rose

Advantages: Lots to do for tourists
Disadvantages: Very Busy in summer months

I have been a York resident all my life so I take it for granted to be honest. But that doesn't stop me giving you some advice on what can only be described as one of Englands most beautiful cities. Getting to York is very easy by train. It's on the east coast main line and trains from London and Scotland regularly stop here. Unless you have to, I wouldn't drive. The city is a bit of a nightmare for cars. We have pedestrian zones through the day ...
...as second world war and York Industry. I think the entry price for adults is £6.50, but well worth it. You can easily spend an afternoon in this museum if you are interested, so I believe it is money well spent. The Jorvik Viking Centre. The pride of York. It starts by you sitting in a time machine with a video picture of some shops just over the road from the Viking Centre, then as the time machine starts, the picture changes to show how York has ...

YORVIK

Advantages: lots to visit
Disadvantages: none

York is one of the most fascinating cities to visit, it is stepped in History and you can almost feel this in the atmosphere as you walk around. It is a city of Viking origin, hence its Viking name Yorvik. This is very apparent as lots of the buildings here still have not altered in any way, classic beamed and very attractive. The City itself is surrounded by roman walls, and there are lots of the old York still visible. The Shambles is a very ...
...will see the huge awesome York Minster, now fully refurbished after the fire that nearly destroyed it, this building is a sight not to be missed, and I cannot tell you how enormous it is, once you get inside you are almost dumbstruck by the beauty of it all, ornate ceilings, and stained glass windows, it really is breathtaking and somehow makes you feel very calm. As I said earlier its Viking origins play a big part and there is a whole experience ...

The Shambles.

Advantages: Lovely little shops.
Disadvantages: Gets busy and crowded.

...all of the butchers of York and the word Shambles comes from the term “sham-mels”, which is the old name for the shelves that displayed the butchers meats. Some of the shops still have some of these shelves on display in their front windows. The area is very popular and because a lot of the shops are small sometimes there is the feeling of being very cramped, but don’t let this put you off, there are so many interesting shops that ...
...Because York is very aware of tourists there are sign posts all over the City, and included on these are directions to The Shambles, so this area is easy to find. One point to remember, if you are a bit unsteady on your feet, or are in a wheelchair, then please bear in mind that the streets of this area are mostly cobbled, and the old narrow shop doorways do not always make access very easy. The Shambles is an exciting, very vibrant area of York, ...
