I wouldn't ... ...system and some traffic-free streets, Zagreb is not the kind of city that lends itself to open-topped bus tours ( I did read about a segway tour of Zagreb recently though) so you do need to walk a fair bit if you want to see a lot. Fortunately, café culture is an intrinsic part of Zagreb life so you should do as the locals do and take regular breaks at pavement cafes. Advantages: great galleries, relatively undiscovered Disadvantages: accommodation is pricy
...People probably have visions of Zagreb being a ruined city, but the damage was in actual fact minimal to non-existent and it was very much business as usual, with the rocket attacks of 1995 very much consigned to history.

Advantages: pretty E. European city Disadvantages: pretty similar to others on Balkan
Zagreb is a capital of Croatia, an independent state of ex Yugoslavia, since 1991. Since that time, many things are different more-less because of the political system that aims joining Croatia to European Community, rather then staying in the community of a little Balkan ex Yugoslavian countries. Some ex Zagreb or ex Yugoslavian population are rather sarcastic while talking about Zagreb today, referring to Zagreb population as a "poor little Vienna's ... ...Yugoslavian, I do remember this Zagreb flair in 80s. For example, in 70s and 80s Zagreb Town publisher have been publishing the best comic book ever, (called Alan Ford) that was, 30 years ago with its ironic content and with rather characteristic black humor, illustrating comic& tragic social and political lifestyle downfall of the time in 90s, on Balkan (without even mentioning civil war). Advantages: Pretty building outside and a reasonably nice train station Disadvantages: Didn't stay for very long at all!
...is because I was in Zagreb for approximately 2 hours. We had just been to Split and the nearby island Brac for 4 days. We then jumped on a train heading towards Bled in Slovenia. However, I must warn you trains in Croatia aren't the best in the world to say the least, the main problem being just how infrequent they are.
So our journey first started with an overnight train from Split to Zagreb, here we had a waiting time of just over 2 hours. The ... ...surrounding area, and I found Zagreb to be a pleasant area at the very early hours of the morning. Directly opposite there was a nice big building with a cool statue (see the attached photos), and just to the left was a pretty hotel with a giant fountain just outside it. Zagreb also has a tram transport system which seemed to be used by most people on their way to work etc.
