The ups and downs of Zagreb

Advantages: Elegant architecture, plenty of green spaces, lots of museums, good food
Disadvantages: Not so good for people with mobility problems

...we took my parents to Zagreb for the day. Of course, we set out from Slovenia so it wasn't the enormous undertaking that sounds. The Croatian capital is well worth a stay of at least a couple of days, but it also makes an excellent day trip and is a viable destination from the holiday resorts of Croatian Istria, the coastal towns and other places in Slovenia, Venice and Trieste in northern Italy and the Plitvice Lakes in northern Croatia. I wouldn't ...
...system and some traffic-free streets, Zagreb is not the kind of city that lends itself to open-topped bus tours ( I did read about a segway tour of Zagreb recently though) so you do need to walk a fair bit if you want to see a lot. Fortunately, café culture is an intrinsic part of Zagreb life so you should do as the locals do and take regular breaks at pavement cafes. On of my favourite things about Zagreb is the view when you exit the train station. ...

Bog off to Zagreb

Advantages: great galleries, relatively undiscovered
Disadvantages: accommodation is pricy

...People probably have visions of Zagreb being a ruined city, but the damage was in actual fact minimal to non-existent and it was very much business as usual, with the rocket attacks of 1995 very much consigned to history. To emphasise the “Business as Usual” maxim, the people of Zagreb have quickly adopting a westernised lifestyle, choosing to ally their lifestyles to those of neighbouring Slovenia and Italy. Many of them in fact visit ...
...in Western Europe, prices in Zagreb are steep, with accommodation being especially pricey. As with any Eastern European capital city, there are touts offering you accommodation from the second that you step onto the platform, and these should be avoided, especially as accommodation near the station is pricier than accommodation elsewhere, although in comparison with other Eastern European cities, Zagreb is not that cheap. This is partially attributable ...

ZAGREB - little VIENNA

Advantages: pretty E. European city
Disadvantages: pretty similar to others on Balkan

Zagreb is a capital of Croatia, an independent state of ex Yugoslavia, since 1991. Since that time, many things are different more-less because of the political system that aims joining Croatia to European Community, rather then staying in the community of a little Balkan ex Yugoslavian countries. Some ex Zagreb or ex Yugoslavian population are rather sarcastic while talking about Zagreb today, referring to Zagreb population as a "poor little Vienna's ...
...Yugoslavian, I do remember this Zagreb flair in 80s. For example, in 70s and 80s Zagreb Town publisher have been publishing the best comic book ever, (called Alan Ford) that was, 30 years ago with its ironic content and with rather characteristic black humor, illustrating comic& tragic social and political lifestyle downfall of the time in 90s, on Balkan (without even mentioning civil war). I also remember many other things, characteristic only for ...

Well what I saw was quite nice!

Advantages: Pretty building outside and a reasonably nice train station
Disadvantages: Didn't stay for very long at all!

...is because I was in Zagreb for approximately 2 hours. We had just been to Split and the nearby island Brac for 4 days. We then jumped on a train heading towards Bled in Slovenia. However, I must warn you trains in Croatia aren't the best in the world to say the least, the main problem being just how infrequent they are. So our journey first started with an overnight train from Split to Zagreb, here we had a waiting time of just over 2 hours. The ...
...surrounding area, and I found Zagreb to be a pleasant area at the very early hours of the morning. Directly opposite there was a nice big building with a cool statue (see the attached photos), and just to the left was a pretty hotel with a giant fountain just outside it. Zagreb also has a tram transport system which seemed to be used by most people on their way to work etc. After a short while, I headed back to my friends who were all asleep on ...
