...island on a clear day, Zante boasts a varied and interesting geography of sandy beaches and coves, shallow waters, stunning mountains, cliffs and caves, and an abundance of marine life including dolphins and its beloved Caretta-Caretta turtles. ...June 2005 I travelled to Zante for a week's holiday with my boyfriend to the resort of Alykanas and this review will focus mainly on this resort. But firstly I will talk about some more general aspects of the island which those considering visiting may like to know.

Shipwreck bay is situated on the north of the island and is only accessible by boat. On the beach is a shipwreck, which was smuggling contraband cigarettes and alcohol onto the island 20 years ago and was washed ashore in a storm. In this bay however is the bluest sea you may ever see and it is a picture postcard sight. I have attached some photos at the bottom. To see the shipwreck you can either take ...

...the Island of Zakynthos aka Zante in the year of 1998. I cannot recall much of this holiday as i was quite young when i went for the first time. The last time i visited the glorious island of Zakynthos was last October. With its glorious and sparkling sea Zante sets your pulse rate soaring. Here there is a harbour where you can board a boat and have a day trip around the island and visit many sights such as the famous ship wreak and the Blue Caves, the day out may seem ...

...lovely island of Zakynthos (or Zante as it is more commonly known). I thoroughly enjoyed the fortnight, and I'm currently suffering from holiday withdrawal symptoms (sniff)!
I stayed in a resort called Tsilivi, so the parts about eating out and facilities will mainly revolve around it, but I hope to be able to give you an idea of the island as a whole, and we did do some exploring.

GENERAL INFORMATION (ZANTE)
Zakynthos is one of the prettiest ... ...for your needs. Zante is the third largest of the Ionian islands - it's neighbouring island of Kefalonia is the largest, with Corfu coming in second. It has an area of 416 km squared. It is the most southerly of the Ionian islands, and the population is around 40,000 (with 10,000 living in the capital of Zakynthos Town). When you're satisfied that you've seen enough of your own resort, there's the chance to take tours of the island, and even take ...

...let me explain the airport. Zante airport is notorious for being a nightmare, up until summer 2005 it was a very small terminal with one conveyor belt for 3 incoming flights worth of luggage in one go, and a departure lounge (if you can call it that) with no seats and a small kiosk that sells food and drink. In the summer of 2005 a new arrivals terminal was built. It has 3 conveyor belts now and the space around them is far larger. The luggage still ... ...day and seeing what else Zante has to offer. The island can be explored by boat or car/scooter. If you take a car here are a few places that you must visit. But if you go you must promise to leave them as you found them, as I have been going for the last 4 years and don't want my favourite places to change! Be careful when driving the roads can be very narrow, and the sign posts are not the best they are usually in Greek and tell you the name of ...

Advantages: sandy beaches; loggerhead turtles Disadvantages: the turtles' environment is being exploited due to tourism
...We only stayed in Zante for one week so we did not get much opportunity to visit the rest of the island. As you may already have realised, we spent most of our time sunbathing, swimming and turtle spotting at Laganas Bay.
One place I will recommend is Shipwreck Bay on the west coast of the island. Stand on the sheer cliff top; a platform offers superb views of a ship buried in the sand hundreds of feet below. Advantages: TURTLES!!! beautiful beaches, many restaurants, bars, and TURTLES!!! Disadvantages: that you get very sad when its time to come home
...That is one thing about Zante in general, everything tends to be fake. Fake purfume, fake TAG watches, fake Gucci bags etc, some of which may be worth buying, but i had no extra cash to do so.

On Laganas beach, several pedolos, and boats are always about looking for turtles and you are more or less guarenteed to see them here. This is easily done as you will look out to sea and see a group of pedolos, or boats all around the same spot, so you know that a turtle has been spotted.
I swam next to three dfferent turtles, with the help of my snorkle and mask, and touched one of them on its side. It is an amazing ...

Advantages: relaxing, beautiful sea, loads to do Disadvantages: maybe too much of a tourist area - not enough of real greek life
...we saw the advert for Zante we were immeadiately keen and booked a holiday through First Choice to Argassi, Zante.
First comments are that the flight was fine but the airport is tiny and can be a nightmare. Luckily (or maybe unluckily) we were given late night flights so as to avoid the rush. It really is tiny. There were only two flights when we were leaving but we had to queue outside as they could only admit about 15 people into the airport at ... ...pay commission.
Back in Zante the nightlife is good. In Argassi there is only one club - The Factory which seemed ok and played a variety of music. Drinks were cheap. We went 28 June - 13 July so first week was off peak and we were getting cocktails for 2 euros. Food was also reasonable with dinners costing about 20 euros for two people including drinks (wine and beer).
Our favourite bar was Apollo. It had karaoke, internet, free pool, air hockey ...

Zante was easily the best holiday I've ever been on. We stayed for 2 weeks at the end of August and it didn't disappoint.
Initially after booking the holiday Zante was all over the news due to Brits drunk abroad, someone had even drunk themsef to death! Luckily, we were staying in Alykanas rather than Laganas which is very much a Club 18-30 resort!
Landing at the airport after a 3hr flight was a bit of a shock, it's tiny! You have to walk across ... ...air condititioning in 38 degree heat, but luckily you're only on it for a minute if that. The airport itself is very small, so there's no need to hang around. Alykanas is probably only a 30 minute drive from the airport but it took much longer as we were on a coach and had lots of stops. If you're used to holidays in Tenerife etc, you will be shocked as the landscape is almost barren and nowhere near as built! Lot's of olive trees and not much else ...

...our A-levels had finished and Zante was chosen because no-one had been there before and it was a little cheaper than other holidays to Ibiza, Tenerife and the like. ...the pleasure of going to Zante with the lads last summer. After our crazy trip to Ibiza the year before, I was preparing myself for a week of sun, sea, sand and sex, although not necessarily in that order. Advantages: sandy beaches; lovely sea; animal biodiversity Disadvantages: Tourism is ruining the environment
Having first visited the Greek island of Zakinthos, in 1996, I was amoungst the very first group of tourists to take holidays out there. The beatiful scenery, blissfully blue sea; gorgeously golden sandy beaches - with little disruption by tourists, there was a real Greek feel, and the caretta caretta (Loggerhead) turtles were abundant, as were the rare Greek sea lion.
Since then, I have visited the island 6 more times, every summer. I have been ... ...fed up with the fact that spain is now too busy, are moving to Greek islands - in particular, Zakinthos (or as the tourists, prefer Zante). Ironically, in doing so, more hotels are built, more people visit the beach, more turtles die. The litter is a real problem, and the sheer lack of care (I must admit, mainly by the English) is trully upsetting. Having watched the environment of the island being gradually trashed by tourism, I e-mailed the Greek ...
