Advantages: Trafic free, swiss run lifts. Disadvantages: Price not for a new skier
I visited Zermatt for the ski season, it is one of switzerlands trafic free resorts so to get there you should be taking a train at some point although there are also taxis availible throughout the day and night. It may be trafic free but do watch out for the horses and milk floats wizzing round the resort.

Advantages: Superb scenery, classic Switzerland, no cars Disadvantages: Expense!
Zermatt is in the southern part of Switzerland and is reached via Rail or Car. However if you bring the car be prepared to leave it parked a couple of miles out of town and use the electric vehicle service to get to Zermatt. No petrol/desiel vehicles allowed in town.

Advantages: Scenery and skiing Disadvantages: Isolation of the town
The train ride up to Zermatt begins with a glorious trip through the streets of Brig. The train climbed steadily upwards but due to the poor weather, my view was obscured. When I arrived in Zermatt I noticed that it was car free, which adds to the quiet and cosy atmosphere. But one has to be carful of the electric carriages, which ferry people to their hotels.
