Holiday Autos (www.holidayautos.co.uk) is part of the www.lastminute.com group and has been in existence for a number of years. Essentially they operate as a broker to find the best deals in car rental across a broad range of countries. Although booking through a broker, the company has deals with all the major international car rental companies such as Europcar, Alamo etc and so you can be assured you won't have to pick up a car from "rent-a-wreck" ... ...are provided with the best rates and availability for the dates you choose, and therefore do not have to waste time visiting lots of different sites to get the best deal. I have used the service a few times now, over a period of four years and I feel it is important to try a service such as this several times to get a good feel for the service provided, before reviewing it. HolidayAutos.com claims to be the world's largest leisure car rental site. You can link via bargainholidays.com, or to the sites own home page. Recommended by Which? Webtraders, and winner of a whole host of accolades, the site is extremely simple and well-laid out. At the time I booked, the home page indicated a £5 discount for booking online, which encouraged me to at least investigate their rates.

Holiday Autos has been around for a few years now. Once an independent company, it was bought by the lastminute.com group. Thankfully, nothing changed when this happened and their service has been as good as ever.
I've used them numerous times, and most recently on a trip to California. This time, I went luxury and rented a convertible. Most times I rent an average family car. My experiences have all been for US trips, but in various States.
When ... ...be easier. First you choose the country you are travelling too. You may have to choose a region within the country too at this point. You then select the pick/drop off points for the rental. This is usually airport locations, but you can on occasion find other points. Provide your pickup/drop off dates, and search!
They will return with a list of car choices available to you, and give an indication as to the actual car type. Don't count on this ...

As we are going on our hols in October and had not booked a hire car with the tour operator, I thought that I would trawl the net for competitive quotes, which I had successfully done for the holiday, travel insurance and airport parking.
After a few high prices I came to holiday autos, put in all my details for a quote and was quite surprised when it came back cheaper than all the others, I then proceeded to the booking stage put in all our details, ... ...experiencing difficulties, so thought I'll try again in a little while, 1 hour later I tried again, same problem so I rang them.

I booked a rental car in Geneva for a few days, naming my girlfriend as the sole driver. On turning up at the airport, I was told that they needed a credit card imprint to cover the excess. This is standard practice, of course, and I offered them my Amex or Visa. They refused, saying that the card needed to be in the name of the named driver. This is not something I have encountered before, and should have been spelt out on their web site before ... ...insurance with no excess (in which case they agreed that no deposit would have been required). However they refused to accept payment for the insurance by my credit card or in cash. I asked them to write a note acknowledging that they had refused to let me collect the car and specifying the reason. Advantages: None Disadvantages: My son & his girlfriends holiday was ruined.
I booked a car for my son and his girlfriend to be picked up at Alicante airport at 11.30pm on 27th July. When they arrived, they were told that there were no cars available, even though we had received a confirmation email from holiday autos and the money had been deducted from my debit card.
I spoke on the phone to holiday autos customer support the following morning (28th) and requested a refund. This has still not been received.
My advice would ... ...through a 3rd party and have no control over the availability of cars. There were about 30 customers who were unable to get their cars on that night. I'm sure that Holiday Autos will still be gaining the interes on the monies paid by these disappointed customers for a service that Holiday Autos didn't provide.

HOLIDAYAUTOS.CO.UK and EUROPCAR stink.
I was forced to upgrade my hire car at Granada airport as another child travelled with us at the last minute and was told by the Europcar spanish staff in broken English that the price of the new car would be 292 euros. The already charged price of 170 euros would be subtracted from this I would only pay the balance ( 122 euros ). I booked the original car through holidayautos.co.uk.
On my return my credit ... ...contact an english person to complain to via holidayautos.co.uk was like trying to find a needle in a haystack. The customer services number is in Asia. They subsequently informed me that because I had signed a document ( in Spanish..which I do not speak ) this was legally binding and there is nothing that they can do. I have been using holidayautos now for the last 6 years and I will use them again this summer. I have booked cars in USA, France and Spain all from holidayautos. One might say I have been lucky because I have no complaints I have heard tales of poor customer service, but have not myself experienced it. Each and every time I have got exactly what I booked (typically a brand new family sized saloon), for where I booked it and for when I booked it. ... ...been from a well known car hire company, with the expected service. The joy comes in that it is all paid upfront and you simply present a voucher and take the car. Maybe I have been lucky, but like I have said I will use them again and probably again. I like the fact that if I do break down in France then I can phone either holidayautos and speak to someone English who speaks French and will apparently sort out the situation, or if feeling brave ...

My advice - book direct with a car company and save yourself money and hassle.
I was charged extra after my booking for 'mandatory winter tyres'. If theye are mandatrory why not include in my booking charge at the very start. Holiday Autos say they have no hidden extras. Maybe not hidden but certainly 'hard to find' . They are not transparent or customer centric.
Essentialy a broker which you can easily avoid. ...

i have used holiday autos.co.uk a few times and always found they give a great service
the last time was in spain when the third party company they used were brilliant - auriga crown spain - i highly recommend these anytime! i paid £66 for a 5 day rental of a ford fusion 5 door petrol, i paid an extra £10 damage excess waiver ( making total cost £76) they picked us up at airport 3 min ride to their depot, the paperwork took literally 5 mns, i only ... ...silly £700 excess or anything so i would say either use holiday autos ( i have always found their prices are great and have never had a minutes trouble from any booking ( 6 in the last 2 years) and if you go through quidco to make your booking you get £7.50 cashback
or go direct with auriga crown (only in spain as far as i can tell) ...

I took out the fully comprehensive package with Holiday Autos when I hired a car in Nice France., thinking I would be covered for all eventualities. When I picked the car up from Europcar I was asked if I wanted to take out fully comprehensive insurance!!! I told them I already had. They told me '"not with us you haven't". They then explained that if anything happened I would have to claim from you. Something did happen and I am attempting to claim ... ...Trading Standards agree with me.
Over six weeks later I have still not been refunded the cost of this unfortunate experience.
When I returned from France I contacted their customer relations and explained in no uncertain terms, how unhappy I was not to have had this explained to me. They apologized and told me that it should have been made abundantly clear to me when I purchased the full cover that I would have to claim through them. Needless to ...

In September 2004 I booked a car for 10 days. The rates on the holidayauto site were very competitive so I ordered there. More important, holidayautos promise,that there are no hidden charges. It turned out that I got a voucher from Alamo-National . It also turned out, that the insurance I had bought was not a real insurance ( as the Alamo man put it), that I had to add 5GBP a day ( I hope the sum is correct) to get reasonable protection from third ... ...that way by holiday autos (again, according to the Alamo rep). The rep even saud that they had repeatedly asked holidayauto to stop this practise because the customers get angry but that holidayauto refuse to do so.
P.S. After returing hoe I sent holidayautos an email complaining. I received an automatic "thank you for writing and please be patient" but have not yet received a serious reply. Alamo-National were fine but be aware of holidayauto !

I did a long crawl through the internet and eventually came up with a Holidays Autos as one of the cheapest and as it is als a large company thought i'd be fine.
Thought i had reserved car through the website, but apparently it's not a reservation at all, they need 2 days to confirm your booking.
2 days can be a long time when your trying to get everything done in advance. Anyway, I was travelling off peak and with over 3 weeks notice thought that ... ...have the exact car available they said they would give you one of the others within the category, there was a choice of least 5 other cars so I thought nothing could go wrong and finished my search on the internet.
The next day, no confirmation, fine they said 2 days, so i waited for the next day. In the middle of the day i get a call telling me the car is not available. I was really disappointed, as i wanted the merc as a surprise to my girlfriend. ...

A three days break to spain, 6 of us so two cars booked, pick up was fine, cars were great, explanation that if cars not returned with full tanks £55 would be taken off credit card - fine. Cars returned full to the brim (only used to a from airport about 6 euros of petrol) Didnt want to inspect cars on return to airport. Credit card bill came in this month, two charges taken by car hire company, oneon day of arrival, one processed 10 days after we ... ...such payments) Impossible to phone holiday autos so have to email, when I do finally get a number they tell me they will write to me (10 days later) just to tell me they will look into it and report back within a working month, in the mean time i'm over £50 short and worried that someone out there is using my credit card for unauthorised payments, they tell me to wait for the enquiry - wondering how much more they can run up in the next month! ...
